I’ve read several books in Carole’s series and enjoyed them very much. I’d say this is my favorite so far.I’ve always had a fascination with the Mayan society. What you’ll read here is fascinating stuff. How did they live? What was their society like? How did they construct their pyramids? So many more questions and so many more answers abound.Among their many contributions is the concept or zero. Of something being nothing. They mapped the skies with telescopes. They even performed brain surgery. This is just of few of their contributions. A funny things is, despite all of this, they never discovered the use of the wheel. I thought that was so odd. All that knowledge and they missed the wheel. Now I wonder how did they build their cities and pyramids.Learn about famous Mayans and more with the wonderful glossary provided at the back of the book. I found it handy and fun to be able to correctly pronounce words and get a better grasp of what they meant. I was thrilled by the wealth of information gleaned from these pages.Welcome to Carole’s Mayan Empire. Read about many amazing things and let your eyes wander over the colorful illustrations. Have fun and learn.I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

Carole's book accurately describes the evolution of Mayan culture. The author shows how the Mayans carved history into stone. There are considerable descriptions of the countryside including the Yucatan Peninsula, trade routes, plazas, ballcourts and markets. The Mayans were great hunters of animals like turkeys and deer. The people ate foods like maize and corn. The kingdom consisted of royalty like the king, the priesthood, merchants, laborers and peasants. Famous people included Itzamn- a Mayan warrior and leader. There are wonderful illustrations of the Mayan countryside by Paula Tabor.Overall, "If You Were Me and Lived In...the Mayan Empire" is a wonderful introduction to a fantastic component of our global culture. The book is written simply with many beautiful illustrations to teach young children the fundamentals of Mayan life, arts and crafts, food and popular historical sites like the Yucatan Peninsula. Carole's book would be very helpful for students from the 3rd grade onward. In addition, this book on the particulars of Mayan culture would be excellent for use during periodic readings by a professional librarian.

This historical story of a once thriving nation, which can be traced back to 1800 BC... Just imagine if you had lived then, you might have been born around 572 BC! The amazing thing was that they wrote their own history from the very beginning and produced magnificent architectural buildings well before they were seen in the Americas...Carole Roman, with the illustrated help by Paula Tabor, has provided us with over 50 pages of intensive historical data and paintings that beautifully present children, and adults, with a comprehensive study of the Mayan Empire. Life was hard and women worked constantly to provide food and clothing for the family. Men and boys would hunt for food, including turkey, deer, iguanas, et.al., but they had no knives so used stones and flint as their sharp-edge tools. Every part of the animals were used, not only for food, but for clothing, etc. Each home had a shrine to their god and then the day began to do the daily work...giving a share to the king first and then using the rest of your goods in support of your family. It was interesting to see how much of their daily living is still similar to today's life...including, for women, to wear jewelry and make their own makeup to color their cheeks, although I admit to being shocked when I learned that they purposefully changed physical characteristics of their children in order to enhance what they considered beautiful... Even more bizarre were what they did to teeth...Whew!All in all, I was happy to learn about it all, but glad I'm living during the time we are...There is a special section of contributions of the Mayan which adds greatly to the value of this early society... Learning about this Empire certainly spotlights how much we have learned from the past...and how much of our daily activities lead forward to the future... This was one of the more important books in this historical series and is highly recommended...GABixlerReviewsPaperback provided for Review

I have loved reviewing these books for Roman! I enjoy learning about new places myself. This one however, I liked to learn about it, but am so thankful I didn't live during this time. These are such fun books for kids. They explore different cultures. They get to learn the terms that were used during that time, the writing, and customs, all such great things for children to be exposed to.I was a little horrified in this book with some of the practises that the Mayans had...shaping babies heads.....it was definitely one of the more interesting books I have read of Roman's.I love being exposed to new things, and this children's book taught me a lot of new things. If you have little people around you these are great books to add to your collections.Source: I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated in any way for this review. These are my own PERSONAL thoughts.

Review

Recent years have seen a marked increase in the popular and ecumenical appeal of icons (for centuries an integral feature of Orthodox Christianity). Jim Forest's Praying With Icons offers a simple introduction to the tradition of icons with special emphasis on their practical function in the spiritual life. Beautifully illustrated both with color plans and b/w photography, Praying With Icons begins with a history of iconography. Icons are not simply illustrations or "art" in the usual sense, but aids to prayer and contemplation, windows on the divine. Forest also provides a personal and practical guide to how one prays with icons. Forest then concludes with a series of meditative reflections on some of the most typical icons, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, Christ's Baptism, the Transfiguration, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, representations of Mary, the trinity, and the Saints. Praying With Icons is a superlative introduction to icons and is highly recommended for readers seeking to expand their spiritual experience to encompass the entire Christian spiritual legacy. --Midwest Book Review

I read Jim Forest's _Praying with Icons_ a few years ago when it first appeared. I just finished re-reading it, and am even more impressed this time around. Anyone familiar with Forest's other books knows how comfortably fluid his style is, and how insightful his ideas are. Both of these qualities make this the single best introduction to icons I know.To my mind, there are three different but interrelated aspects of this book that are especially worth noting. The first is Forest's argument that "beauty bears witness to God," and that in depicting holy things beautifully, icons enhance our relationship with the Divine. This is a point well worth considering. Too often, I fear, beauty in the context of worship is either dismissed as irrelevant (all that matters is the word), venerated for its own sake (high church preciousness), or overdone and distractingly gaudy. But Forest reminds us that the beauty of icons is intended to aid in the transfiguration of those who pray before them. Icons are images of the wholeness of God, and they convey and impart some of that wholeness to us through their beauty. It takes a great deal of artistry to manifest that kind of beauty. The second point worth noting is Forest's observation that the writing/painting of an icon is in itself an act of worship and service, entered into reverently and prayerfully. There are traditions that dictate how the wood is prepared, how the colors are selected, what they represent, and so on. The care and love with which icons are made is a good reminder that all work with God's creation is, or ought to be, mindful and reverential. The fruits of all our mental and physical labor are, in one manner of speaking, iconic. The third especially noteworthy aspect of Forest's treatment is his tie-in of prayer with icons. It might seem that the connection between the two is obvious, but I'm not sure this is the cas, at least not in the contemporary U.S.. I've been in many homes where icons are displayed as curiosities, by totally secular hosts, on the walls right next to African masks and Peruvian weavings. Forest's reflections on prayer--that it involves the whole person, not just the intellect, that it requires the cultivation of stillness and silence, that a good prayer life is one that requires a great deal of deliberate discipline, and that the goal of our prayer life is theosis--are wonderful. In addition, as earlier reviewers have pointed out, the last 150 pages of the book discuss specific icons--Christ, Mary, the saints, the Transfiguration, etc--pointing out their language, their significance, and their histories. Readers of Forest's book will be well prepared to begin praying with icons, and to move on to other reflections on icons such as John of Damascus' _On the Divine Images_ or Leonid Ouspensky & Vladimir Lossky's _The Meaning of Icons_.Finally, the illustrations, in color as well as black-and-white, are fabulous. A book to read and re-read.

Beautifully written book that is both easy to read and profoundly aware of the theology and mystery behind icons within the Orthodox liturgical and theological traditions. No detail in an icon goes unnoticed in this book, and I originally purchased it as part of an inquiry class. I would absolutely recommend this book to any inquirer into Eastern Orthodoxy or Eastern Catholicism, or any Orthodox/Byzantine Catholic looking to learn more about their own traditions.

If one desires pure Orthodox teaching, avoid the mixed opinions of this author. Instead, cling to the humble teaching of the Church Fathers: maturity in praying will follow.https://www.amazon.com/001-Philokalia-Complete-Nikodimos-Markarios/dp/0571130135

It's well written and overall a good read and reference book. Have already recommended it to my friends. I liked the book so much I now have the ebook and hard copy.

I had always looked at Icons and labeled them 'primitive christian art'. But after reading Jim Forest's book 'Praying with Icons', I have fallen in love with iconography. The Icon artist does not paint without intention; each item in an icon has theological significance. For me, reading this book, has been a journey, an opportunity to reflect and deepen my faith. The excerpts from the Orthodox writings and liturgy are profoundly moving. It also is a lesson to view ALL religious art in a deeper way. What was the artist trying to communicate? How did he feel about his subject matter? Why did he choose the colors, are they significant to his vision? What compositional elements did the artist use to communicate his message? These are some of the questions one can ask when they view ANY religious art.Lastly, an icon or a painting, can bring one to prayer; where one can clear away the clutter of modern life to reach that inner place within where one encounters truth, and communicates with the God who loves us.

Absolutely wonderful intro to living with and praying with icons. Very easy and enjoyable to read. Great history and info about icons, both as religious items and pieces of art. Inspirational and spiritual. I'm Episcopalian, and I now have a icon corner that includes the Mt. Sinai Pantocrator and the Theotokos of Vladimir, among others. Beautiful!!

As a Roman Catholic deacon who has recently begun writing icons, I am very impressed with this beautiful book by Jim Forest. I found Part I - In the Image of God especially helpful in his description of the qualities of an icon, color in iconography and the rules of an icon painter. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about iconography.

I enjoy reading this on my kindle and the fact that it can read to me! I've recently had surgery and cannot wear my glasses yet wanted to know the contents of the book. I appreciate the approach of the author in composition and use of language. It is simply well done and comprehensive.

Review

“This is a well-documented introduction to unionization efforts by often marginalized, behind-the-scenes workers.”—Booklist“Powerful, sobering, and timely, this is a much-needed global examination of poverty wages.”—Foreword Reviews“Stunning in its breadth and impact, filled with vivid characters from many countries who speak in as many languages, the book is an epic achievement—it shows us globalization from the perspective of the people who do its work.”—Linda Gordon, author of The Second Coming of the KKK“With common sense and a lot of fire, low-wage workers across the globe are building social movements. Crafted with corazón, this book is a crisply paced, panoramic labor history of the here and now.”—Vicki L. Ruiz, author of From Out of the Shadows“A vivid rendering of the human impact of free trade policies and neoliberal restructuring across the globe. Annelise Orleck tells the stories of members of the global ‘precariat’ in the Philippines, Cambodia, Bangladesh, the US, and elsewhere, and their struggles for a living wage. A welcome addition to courses on social inequalities, social movements, and social change, it will shift how students see the hamburgers they eat and the clothes they wear.”—Professor Arlene Stein, Institute for Research on Women at Rutgers University“Annelise Orleck takes us on an inspiring journey across Asia, the Americas, and Europe into the world of low-wage organizing. With an ethnographer’s eye, historian’s perspective, and activist’s passion, she not merely charts the precariousness of work under a rapacious capitalism but captures the power of protest to transform lives. A must for classes in Labor, Globalization, and Gender.”—Professor Eileen Boris, Hull Professor of Feminist Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara“Essential reading for any law student or legal professional seeking to harness law in service of social justice. As she illuminates the precarity uniting workers around the globe, Orleck calls out the laws and legal structures that have failed them, while also highlighting creative legal strategies for demanding dignity and basic security.”—Professor Karen Tani, Assistant Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley“A wonderful and urgent history-of-the-present. I often struggle with finding powerful and evocative treatments of contemporary social movements that measure up to the riveting, richly contextualized histories we have for the civil rights era. This book does that—and embeds US struggles in a global movement for anti-poverty wages and humane conditions.”—Professor Jeanne Theoharis, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and author of A More Beautiful and Terrible History“Annelise Orleck skillfully weaves an inspiring global narrative of protest, coalition and empowerment—a narrative essential to students of oral history, testimony and witness, and activism in the face of a global economy of indifference and disposability. This is a model of engaged scholarship, empathic and respectful toward its subjects, enabling to its readers.”—Professor Marianne Hirsch, William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Professor in the Institute for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Columbia University“Bursting with the heartrending voices of the precariat…this book captures the unspeakably inhumane working conditions and courageous determination driving the global uprisings against unrestrained capitalism. A must read for students of history, women and feminist studies, class and labor, race and ethnicity, and international studies, it is a twenty-first-century grassroots primer for social justice organizing, and a clarion call to exalt human beings over the insatiable hungry ghosts of profit and consumption.”—Rhonda Y. Williams, author of Concrete Demands and Professor and John L. Seigenthaler Chair in American History, Vanderbilt University

An easy read with inspiring, and anger-producing, stories about the struggle for safe working conditions and fair pay around the world. Wonderful photos by Liz Cooke. The people differ, but the well-written, readable book well-illustrates the commonality of the problems, the reasons leaders emerge and the desperate need for change and better solutions.
