This new book on Justice Ginsburg looks like just another coffee table volume--don't be misled. This multifaceted book is at once a biography of RBG, a collection of outstanding pictures and paintings of the Justice, an intimate look into her chambers and private life, and a grouping of some of her outstanding public statements. Proceeding chronologically, the text is divided into four parts: Origins; Breaking Barriers; Making Her Case; and Longevity & Legacy. The art work is nothing short of astounding quality, drawn from it appears private family photos, news pictures, the Supreme Court collections, and White House sources. While the text is not extensive or detailed, the author has done an effective job in matching up the narrative with pertinent pictures and other materials. In addition, a number of the Justice's public statements are included with complementary photos. All together these separate elements join to make a powerfully effective presentation.One aspect that is stressed more here than in other studies of the Justice are her strong ties to Judaism, a powerful element shaping her life and judicial outlook. A good judicial biography affords the reader insight into what makes the judge "tick," and we gain a helpful perspective on the Justice here. While there is not extensive discussion of cases, some of the most important are touched upon here. For example, what must be the Justice's favorite of her decisions, the Virginia Military Institute case, is discussed by the author, examined by the Justice in her statement from the bench announcing the decision in 1996, and then supplemented by photos of the Justice visiting VMI 10 years after the decision. This is a prime example of the author's skillful merging of text, judicial statements, and photos into an effective whole. In other cases, the narrative is also supported by contemporary courtroom sketches of the actual arguments.The final part on the Justice's legacy and longevity is the most poignant, as she approaches 95. She certainly seems to enjoy the recent "notorious RBG" wave of attention, and the pictures prove it. Even a picture of her fitness coach is included which is quite important, since being in fighting trim keeps her going. Scenes of her with Justice Scalia demonstrate how close these two disparate Justice were; here they seen riding elephants and participating in operas. And soon we will have a new film joining the current documentary on the Justice. Her enjoyment is certainly well deserved.If you well acquainted with the Justice from other bios, as I am, you will certainly learn some new aspects from this book, and as I said, the pictures are magnificent and complement any more traditional biography. If you plan to read only one book on the Justice, there is plenty of meat on the bones here to facilitate becoming somewhat familiar with the Justice and her history. All I can say is that I have read and reviewed every RBG book and bio out there, and I found it not only an informative but also a pleasant read.

Five stars for everything . . . EXCEPT the narrator. He gets a zero . . . & there's so much of him. As another reviewer noted, these books are less about Inspector Hobbes & more, much more, about Andy. And I really, really regret that, as the rest of Inspector Hobbes is very good to excellent, with good writing, intriguing characters, quite a lot of humor, imaginative (though not very frequent) action scenes & acceptable mysteries. So sad.Inspector Hobbes & his housekeeper are wonderful characters & I loved everything about these books . . . except the narrator, Andy. As a Watson to Hobbes' Holmes he can be forgiven his cluelessness & as an Arthur Dent (who I quite sympathize with) to Hobbes' Ford Prefect, he can be forgiven his 'nervous nature'. But he is also a slacker, an ingrate & a freeloader. And he's "accident prone" mostly because he's careless, lazy & takes no responsibility for himself. He could contribute quite a bit to the household in which he finds himself, but even when he makes the rare attempt, it is usually abortive thru lack of preparation or inattention. I almost gave up on this book, but figuring that he seemed such a young man he might improve with exposure to the upstanding & compassionate Hobbes, I stuck it out to the end. And he did rise to the occasion when absolutely necessary. But I was mightily shocked when I found that he is supposed to be 37 years old! The scattering of references to his smothering mother, verbally abusive father & one single line about "what happened to [his] sister" (presumably tragic) weren't sufficient, for me, to counterbalance his unlikeability. Perhaps if more of his background had been interspersed in the beginning . . .With the indications towards the end of book 1 that Andy could improve, I was hopeful when I began book 2. But though "mostly harmless" he continues to be pretty thoroughly selfish & whining. And altho thots of better behavior occasionally cross his mind, he rarely acts on even the smallest, like thanking the housekeeper. I became rather adept at skimming the pages of his "oh pity me & when's my supper going to be". But it's still irritating enough that I will not be continuing the series.

I don’t remember how I happened on Wilkie Martin’s Inspector Hobbes series but I noticed “Inspector Hobbes and the Blood” on my kindle and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. A light, urban fantasy was exactly what I needed.There are so many variations of “urban fantasy” it is difficult to know what to expect. I would call this “Rivers of London” meets Scott Meyer :) Like “Rivers”, this focuses on police work/mystery with an, um, “unusual” detective and a very human side kick in world populated by fantastic creatures. But it also has the silly humor, pratfalls of Meyer’s “The Authorities”. As you might expect, the mystery isn’t that mysterious- the fun is in the journey.Although I’m a big fan of Aaronovitch and Meyer, I’m a little surprised that I found this so addictive because the sidekick narrator, Alan, really isn’t very likeable. In addition to seeming more cursed than merely accident prone, he is often petty, cowardly, and mean spirited. But he does show an awareness of his failings. (I probably would have been more comfortable if he were a twenty year old rather than 37.) But addictive it is. I’ve already read the second in the series and started the third. Spoiler Alert- Alan improves with each book :)

This is a fun mystery. One is never sure how much is supernatural till close to the end. That makes it sound like a serious, frightening book, but it's actually very light-hearted, with a lot of humor. Much of the humor seems to just miss the mark, (which, judging from other reviews, may just be my taste. )Somewhat slow moving at first, and, as others have remarked, with the narrator being rather obnoxious (though he gets better as the book proceeds), it had me wondering if one of the villains was supernatural up until the end. The mystery itself is somewhat rambling, the author concentrating more upon the characters.I'd say this is a fun read, though slow in places. I'm going to buy the next one, because I think this series has a lot of potential, and with a slight bit of polishing, some of the jokes could be laugh out loud on the subway funny.My other reason for buying the book (and planning to go through the series) is that there are hints of an interesting backstory for some of the main characters, and I'm curious enough to keep reading to find out their true history.For a first novel (as far as I know, at least the first of a series), it held my attention, though I had to push through a few spots, and deal with my annoyance at the narrator. It certainly did make me want to buy the next book in the series.I can't really think of what to compare it to. It's sort of an urban fantasy combined with a British police procedural.

This particular series is like Port wine - it's an acquired taste. When I bought this first book in the series, I only managed to get through the first score or two of pages. I so disliked the chief character Andy Caplet that I almost stopped. Perhaps it's the English thing - - they like milk toast protagonists who come through in a pinch. I really disliked the guy...and still do (four books in); however, the rest of the characters are amazing and wonderful, from Inspector Hobbes (apparently a were of some sort) to Mrs. Goodfellow, to the rest of the cast. It's really difficult, however, to get over one's complete contempt for the principle character and so the four stars instead of five. E-gads, Mr. Martin, at least give Andy a pretend spine at some point in the series. Yes, I bough them all. They're addicting. They're like Pralines and Cream ice cream or Blanton's bourbon. Neither is good for you, but you enjoy yourself so much it doesn't really matter. In this first book we find out that vampires aren't real - - they just think they are.

I'm not a baseball fan, but early this year I heard a brief interview with Jim Bouton and there was something about him that caught my attention - perhaps his voice (you can hear his smile in his voice), perhaps it was his word choice or maybe it was his humor. Regardless, something got to me and I sought out this book. I had a choice between reading it and listening and, because it was read by the author, I opted to get the audiobook.Ball Four is only superficially a book about baseball and you don't need to understand or love baseball to get this book. Ball Four is a coming of age story ... about an adult and for an adult. Bouton is a superb storyteller and observer, but he is also philosopher, a pundit, a prankster and a child. The book at first seems like diary entries or a series of vignettes, but all of a sudden you find you are immersed and entwined in the story of the life of a very special, yet very human, man. For me the baseball was just a framework for the story of a man growing into another man over the period of 30 years. Bouton first opens his mind to the readers, and then he opens his heart - his hopes, fears, dreams, moments when he is great and moments when he is flawed. I laughed (a lot), and I cried (in a good way), and going through Jim Bouton's journey made me a little less scared and a lot more accepting of my own journey. If I ever met Mr. Bouton on the street I would feel like hugging him as I would an old friend.Jim's narration is as revealing as his writing and I encourage you to try this as an audiobook but I finished it only to run out and buy a hard copy so I could someday enjoy this book at a slower pace and linger...Given the book is on multiple "the best lists" I can't imagine how I missed it all these years. I consider this books one of my top 100 books... a desert island book... and one I know that I will read again and again.

I discovered a copy of "Ball Four" in my high school library over 25 years ago, and found it to be laugh-out-loud funny. Jim Bouton, in the twilight of his baseball career, and suffering from a sore arm (this was in the days before sports medicine came along and prolonged careers), reinvented himself as a knuckleball pitcher and hooked on with the lowly expansion Seattle Mariners. His observations on locker room life and on the easy availability of hot young women to professional athletes, was an inspiration to me at age 14. Ever since then, I've picked up a copy of the book every few years (and I have at least three copies by now) and always find something new to enjoy or quote or admire.Other reviewers on this site refer to "Ball Four" as "dated". I could not disagree more. Even though the book was largely written in 1969, it still has a lot to tell us about modern-day society, labor-management relationships, the role of sports in society, and politics. Bouton, as a 30-year-old ballplayer, was unusually observant, and, as he writes from 1969 -- the same year that "Mad Men" is up on TV now, as I write this review -- spokevery perceptively about the kinds of societal change that most of us enjoy watching Don Draper struggle with. Also, as an avowed left-winger, Bouton provides a perspective different to the majority of other baseball figures.Reading "Ball Four", you can choose to just enjoy the more raunchy or R-rated material while ignoring the more social or political material. Or you can read up on the very early years of baseball's labor wars, and get your history lesson on the likes of Bowie Kuhn and Marvin Miller. Or, if you enjoyed the movie "Office Space", there's tons of material here about the short-sightedness of the management, which involved at least 7 increasingly muffled layers of supervision between the owners and the players of a single team. Bouton was a keen student of baseball history, and spends a fair bit of time talking about old players, and the guys he followed when he was a kid; he has the misfortune in 1969 to be coached by Sal Maglie, one of Bouton's childhood heroes but a truly inept pitching coach (as they say, never meet your heroes!)). But, not only that, Bouton figured into the very dawn of today's statistical-oriented baseball analytics --he realized that relief pitchers should be judged by inherited runners scored and baserunners-per-inning ratios, rather than purely by wins and losses. He was immensely valuable as a relief pitcher in 1969 -- his Strat-O-Matic card proves that -- but the Pilots ignored him and under-utilized him, because they weren't paying attention to the right information.So, read "Ball Four" -- and its several updates, issued in 1980, 1990, and 2000. There's something amazing on nearly every page of the book and its supplements -- funny, titillating, insightful, of historical interest, or just plain mind-boggling. There are very few other baseball books that hit their targets so directly, or that are so eminently quotable. The book will be 50 years old soon, but it will never, ever, go out of date.

I first read this book back in the mid 70's when I wanted to learn a little bit about baseball because I wanted to be able to talk with co-workers about the game. I was not a baseball or sports fan at the time. To tell the truth, I'm still not. But I just got a retirement job as an usher at a minor league ballpark and decided that I needed to refresh some info. So, when this book popped up as a Kindle special daily deal, I got it again. It was even better after almost 40 years. What I loved about the book was that it made baseball players human beings and that made me curious about the game. Reading it again made me appreciate what the players went through back then, the difficulty of their lives (in spite of all of the so-called glamour) and how tenuous the baseball career can be. This edition also included updates from many years after it was published and it thrilled me and yes, I cried along with him. It is one of the best books that I have ever read.

I read this book in my high school years in the 70s and again now. I think my rating would be 4/5 stars both times. I enjoyed the humor, baseball stories, and the updates provided in today's version. As a baseball fan, I enjoyed an "insider's view" to coaching, player behavior and attitudes, what happens in non-game time with a team, and relationships between players. It was interesting to see how baseball has changed in some ways (the author "fought" hard for $1000 raise and many players earned less than $20,000) and stayed the same in many ways. In trying to describe why I didn't rate this book a 5, I think I didn't care for the fact he wrote without letting the people he was writing about know. His attitude seemed a little cynical at times in his view of management and players he didn't care for. I think if I were his teammate, I wouldn't have liked to discover his publishing a book about "what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room" type of things either as some baseball people then took offense to. Ball Four was controversial when it was released but seems "tame" now after reading Jose Canseco's revelations and others. All in all, a good read for a baseball person.
