Review

“After the Dance: My Life With Marvin Gaye is billed as a new tell-all memoir. And it lives up to the hype.” (LA Weekly)“With sensitivity and insight, Gaye examines their explosive four-year marriage, ultimately making peace with the dark side of one of America’s most influential partners.” (O, The Oprah Magazine)“Jan’s writing … is engaging, steamy, harrowing, and insightful.” (Library Journal)“...a story told honestly and directly, with real passion and plenty of behind-the-scenes insight. (Booklist)“If your heart is not affected greatly after reading, it’s time for a checkup... What a fabulous book of poems.” (Washington Independent Review of Books)“Jan and Marvin’s love affair is hot-and at times amazingly cold. We see how love can bring people together as well as tear them apart. This fascinating and entertaining memoir is an unforgettable education on the power of love.” (Zane, New York Times bestselling author)“With raw and penetrating honesty, this memoir reveals everything audiences ever wanted to know about Marvin Gaye’s life. Most important, this is also a story of a woman courageously sharing her voice, her story.” (bell hooks, author of Ain't I a Woman)“The story made me emotional, confused, and sympathetic, all at the same time. Love, drugs, power, and demons-with a hint of other celebrity lives intertwined-make up Jan’s story with the legendary crooner. The raw storytelling, full of secrets kept until now, makes this book a treasure.” (LisaRaye McCoy, actress)“This stunning memoir is hot! It’s also unforgettable in its pain and vulnerability, which Jan Gaye presents with raw honesty. It will make all women love differently, but probably no less passionately.” (Grace Octavia, author of Something She Can Feel)

From the Back Cover

Shaped by a troubled childhood, Janis Hunter found solace with Marvin Gaye—the soulful prince of Motown with the seductive liquid voice, whose genius chart-topping, socially conscious album What’s Going On made him a superstar when it was released in 1971. Despite a seventeen-year age difference and Marvin’s marriage to Motown founder Berry Gordy’s sister, the enchanted teenager and the emotionally volatile singer began a scorching relationship soon after they met in February 1973. Their romance navigated the hippie high life of the seventies and took the couple from one adventure to another. But the distractions and burdens of fame, the chaos of dysfunctional families, and the irresistible temptation of drugs complicated the love they shared. Marvin and Jan hurt each other, and their relationship descended into a dark place, but the attraction was too magnetic and the love was too strong to let go. A searing memoir of love, drugs, sex, and old-school R&B that is unsparing in its honesty and insight, After the Dance is the moving, passionate story of one of music history’s most fabled relationships. Jan Gaye reveals what it’s like to be in love with an artistic genius, a man whose words and music have touched the world and made him a legend.

"After The Dance: My Life With Marvin Gaye is not a sensationalized tell all, instead it is a cautionary tale of how insecurity, dysfunction and cruelty can end the greatest of loves while that love can inspire world class art. Her uncertainty and insecurity made the then young girl submit to sexual fantasies of Marvin's that she now regrets. Her inexperience led her to forego her education, move in with Marvin and in the name of love, abandon any pursuit of marketable skills while becoming financially dependent on a free spending addict. Jan also reveals how she and her late husband shared a deep spirituality as well as a mutual love of top shelf quality drugs. In the book, she has shared as much about her personal struggle with, and triumph over substances as she has shared about anyone else's.Her heartbreaking tale describes how the ill matched couple had very little chance of succeeding from the start; she had been raised in an uncertified foster care home where she'd been dumped by her loving but drug addicted mother and became the victim of sexual abuse. He had been the son of a deeply religious, evangelical cross dressing father who'd beaten Marvin mercilessly for questioning the elder's fashion sense, and daring to raise the possibility that his gender bending attire may have brought dishonor to the family name. Marvin was also a superstar depressive who had lost his way and was using copious amounts of drugs to numb the pain from the break-up of his first marriage. Jan and Marvin never had a chance.I spoke with Jan, earlier this year, via telephone. She called for the purpose of nervously reading the book's first chapter to me, and getting my opinion. She hadn't turned in her manuscript to her publisher yet, so I felt flattered by the sneak preview. I assured her that what she'd written was great, and it was, but in no way had her excerpt prepared me for the exceptionally intimate, personal and poetic work of depth and beauty that she and Ritz have delivered.Jan describe how life at the side of a glamorous '70s sex symbol was like living in the eye of a hurricane. She writes of the unscrupulous promoters, Marvin's ambivalence about performing, and his stage fright. She writes of Motown pressuring the superstar for bigger and more frequent hits. She writes of Marvin's loyalty to Motown chieftain, Berry Gordy, and Marvin's bitter resentment of Gordy's lack of appreciation for his artistic ambitions. The book insightfully examines the complications caused by Marvin's marriage to, and ultimate divorce from Gordy's sister Anna. There are also recollections of delusional managers who could not manage the great but unmanageable talent, and vignettes about accountants and business managers who could not convince Marvin to spend less frequently, save more often or pay his taxes. She has written beautifully about the gorgeous messiness of love in the shadows of stardom while it's shrouded in the fog addiction.Recently Jan and her children have been in the news as a result of having won a seven figure judgement against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke, in a copyright infringement lawsuit, over the contention that their "Blurred Lines" record of two summer's back too closely resembled Marvin Gaye's dance floor classic "Got To Give It Up". It has been said that the landmark decision will put a chill on musical creativity, and that a business built on sampling the work of others has been rocked at its core. Time will tell.Of course, for me, the most interesting portions of the book are the ones where Jan describes the creative process that Marvin, the hit maker, went through to come up with the albums; "Here My Dear"; "I Want You"; Let's Get It On" and the smash single "Got To Give It Up", and the subtle way that she inspired and guided Marvin to the expression of his best and higher artistic potential. This book is her love letter to her mentor, partner and former husband who was tragically murdered by the hand of the cross dressing father who vied for control of the Gaye clan with his strong willed son. It is her deeply personal confession of the adoration, confusion and regret that she felt as a result of falling up to her eyeballs in love with one of the most creative figures of the twentieth century. It proves that Marvin's spirit still speaks to all of us through his music and through this tremendously written work. For soul music fans and those who are interested in black creativity and pop culture it is a must read. Jan Gaye hit this one out of the park.

Addictive. I Couldn’t put it down. A honest, raw, and easy read. Not only was it a good romance story it also focused on the drug Rise during that time and how impacted the world. From weed to cocaine to crack; people not from that era got a glimpse into the freedom and ignorance of the impact drugs would eventually have. I became so captivated with this story I forgot that I knew how the story would end. I found myself even rooting for their love to work our. I forget I was reading about a superstar. It was relatable and I decided to buy after listening to Marvin “I want you” album on replay for weeks. I think I may read it again. Lol.

I have read several books about Marvin Gaye. Jan's is, of course, about their relationship. It seems she was so over the top for him that eventually she couldn't deal with his continuing downward spiral before his death. I believe their relationship was mostly sexual and that she cared for him so much she wasn't able to help him with the drugs, etc. Of course each person has their own view of Marvin, but he was truly conflicted with his lifestyle which was created by his musical gifts and people who tried to take advantage of him because of the money he generated. The book was definitely interesting and pictured a whole different side of Marvin Gaye, and for that reason it was very interesting.

Other comments on this book made it sound like it was highly graphic and disturbing but I didn't find it that way at all. I think Jan was honest about her experience with Marvin without being too graphic. I love memoirs on musicians and their associates. Musicians are such fascinating creatures. I enjoyed reading about what it was like for Jan dating one of the top recording artists and being associated with the music industry. I am very sad Marvin's life was so troubled and I wish Jan and her children nothing but the best. And btw, I got this book used but it was in near perfect condition. Keeping this book forever. Now I'm off to read Ritz's book on Marvin. :)

Being a Detroit (Motown) girl during the 60's 70's and 80's,and married to an entertainer myself, I had a first hand view of all that came and went in the dysfunctional, professional world of music. However, Jan Gaye should be commended for her exposure of the personal horrors that often accompanied the privet lives of those who had a relationship with these people. Not every entertainer is possessed of these demons, but those that are tend to destroy themselves, and everyone else who who touches their lives and chooses to love them. This is a must read for all who wish to know the real world and the real people sucked into the drama of entertainers and the world of intertainment. Well done Jan Gaye and thank you for your truth, honesty, and courage.

I heard Jan Gaye's book interview on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and knew that I had to read this book. Once it arrived at my doorstep...it was a page turner! I had my nose in this book every chance I got morning and night. I am a Marvin Gaye fan and was eager to know more about the man behind the music. The author did not disappoint...as a matter of fact she provided more than I could have ever imagined about the man, their family life, the tours, the music, his friends, their marriage, the kids, Motown, the drugs, the infidelity, the ex-wife and much more. Marvin was a genius and a very complex man at the same time. He made mistakes and we get to see that the stage, glitz, and glamour does not erase being simply human. The author lived a life that movies are made of. She socialized with most famous singers and some NFL athletes. The revelation of her relationships with Teddy Pendergrass & Frankie Beverley was most generous and certainly she has another book inside of her. This book was well done and should be on your summer reading list!

Amazon.com Review

This splashy, high-concept book with glossy pages (designed to accompany a BBC-TV series) is not so much an encyclopedia, as a color scrapbook of Clive Barker's horror obsessions. After an introduction in which Barker examines such questions as "What is horror?" and "Why does it fascinate us?," the book takes the form of 26 heavily illustrated historical essays about assorted topics in the genre--one for each letter of the alphabet (e.g., "B is for Beelzebub"). The pictures include numerous paintings and drawings by Barker, stills from movies, movie posters, author/director bio inserts, and photographs of all types. A partial list of the topics covered: serial killers, H. P. Lovecraft, Dennis Wheatley, John Carpenter, H. R. Giger, Grand Guignol, makeup, killer clowns, killer kids, body horror, Japanese monsters, Barbara Steele, Shirley Jackson, fairy tales, and sculptor Franz Messerschmidt. A fun toy for horror buffs!

I join the ranks of those who have given high praise to this superb, vibrant compilation of facts and other curious oddities about horror in books and film. The layout design is graphically pleasing with dozens of photos and illustrations in both black and white and color. These are attractively aired with white space on the pages and, though interesting in themselves, never compete or distract from the text. Essential bibliographic data or curious informational tidbits are smartly set in gray screen and/or block frames. All of these design elements make for a highly attractive book but, most importantly, aid in gleaning facts at quick glance. In fact, much of the book's design strategies help disguise the fact there is an abundance of information that might seem tedious or less interesting if presented less imaginatively. The book is actually quite dense with facts, dates, and quotes--all visually displayed in a palatable, readily accessible presentation. Though this reviewer has not seen the acclaimed BBC television series to which this book is the official companion, he suspects it to be equally energetic and ambitious in its presentation; and the inspirational basis for the book's high-concept, stunning design. A detailed index gives added value to this concisely written, well-organized guide to the best horrific frights in cinema and print.

Disclaimer: No matter what anyone tells you; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre did not happen. Leatherface is not or has not ever been in a Texas prison. That fact and many more await you in this magnificent tome. This book is chock full of references that every aspiring horror writer or horror fans in particular would love.Ever wonder the process John Carpenter and Debra Hill went through to introduce the world to Michael Myers? Are you a Lovecraft fan or John Wayne Gacy buff? Want to write that perfect vampire novel, comic or screenplay? It's all in here. All that and so much moreClive Barker lays out the dishes and does not hold anything back. A must have

MUST HAVE! Great reference book and fun to read. I don't like Clive Barker's fiction style but he is a damn good Director. Hellraiser (only the first one was good) Nightbreed, Midnight Meat Train, and Lord of Illusions are solid and great horror/scifi movies. I may try to re read his fiction stories in the future. I will start with Hellbound Heart.

While the first chapter of the book fell from its shotty binding, the information within is extremely interesting and Clive Barker's writing is great. I recommend this book to any horror fan, especially those of Clive Barker's fan base!

Clive Barker is an amazing writer. I buy almost anything with his name on it and everything he has written. If you love horror, sci-fi, and mind blowing tales, you will love his books.

Love it!!

I love Clive Barker's range of horror topics covered in this book. I seriously wanted this book for it's section on Grand-Guignol.

This is an excellent book about all things horror, but is mostly concerned about books and movies. I got this book after flicking through the pages in the local bookstore and was taken aback by the wonderful layout and colorful images of what Clive Barker has to tell us about the world of horror. It is completely illustrated from start to finish and has lots of art work from Barker himself and there is plenty to read about in between images and pictures of all things diabolical.Essentially the book donates a few pages to each letter of the alphabet like "M" is for "Murder" and then Barker starts ranting about that topic in as many of its different forms as he sees fit - however the book is primarily written by Stephen Jones, but there is plenty of Barker inside. There is lots and lots of references to artists, writers, actors, filmmakers, makeup artists and directors. Barker also talks about real life horror with such topics as Ed Gein the serial killer.I would highly recommend this volume of work to anyone who wants to know more about horror. By flicking through the pages they will come across lots and lots of things that they would probably like to know more about. Whenever I am thinking about buying a horror movie or a horror novel I always turn to this guide to see what Barker or Jones recommend. As a horror writer Barker is into the whole scene and is never short of coming up with something interesting that you might like to know more about. This is highly recommended companion guide to all things horror. The book is really well designed and you will find yourself turning to it time and time again.
