The story was well written and well researched. Everybody had a certain ability they were good at and their own personality. The book was written for several different view points and only confused me once, when 2 people were talking about the same thing one flowing into the other I just missed the transition marks(my mistake). I think Jules is my favorite character in the book. A boy who lost his parents at the age of fourteen in a murder robbery and spent the next 9 years of his life learning things like parkor, akido, and a few different languages, and fine tuning his mind and body to retrieve a bracelet that was taken from his mother. That pursuit led him to a group of people that locate lost items and return them to who they belong to, and a man looking for a cure for his sickness and power. Jules becomes an important piece to figuring out a puzzle connected to the bracelet taken from his mom 9 years ago.

Do you like bigger than life, epic action/adventures? If yes, then you may have found the right book in the Tomb of Aradia. It has everything you could ask for. A young, dashing protagonist, Jules, who’s a world-class, parkour practitioner, even calculating complex maneuvers on the fly (like the length of a bungee cord needed to land softly – imagine what happens if you make a mistake). He also boasts encyclopedic knowledge over an immense range of topics. The story boasts buried cities and ancient civilizations with strange, perhaps mystical powers. You’ll also find globe-trotting action from Old Town Prague to a chateau in France to the far reaches of Mongolia. It has scenes that will bring to mind movies from Indiana Jones to James Bond. But even though it has all the elements of a spell-binding, epic adventure, their implementation hurt the pace, making the book somewhat of an epic read. The story centers around Julian Siebeko (Jules), a young, black freelance treasure hunter. But if you have a stereotype for that profession, I’d guess he’s nothing like it. He’s impatient, almost hostile toward the thoughts and plans of others, yet he constantly ends up in trouble himself. He repetitively changes loyalties among three competing factors – a group of unorthodox archaeologists, a ruthless billionaire, and the head curator of the British royal family. Then, he’s forced to seek help from one of the others to extricate himself. He’s also driven by an insatiable urge to retrieve a bangle stolen from his dying mother, but when he secures it, he just finds other troubles. True, the book sees Jules maturing, but the ‘go your own way, then get help’ routine gets repeated too frequently. Additionally, some things about his character are simply inexplicable. For such an extremely well-read and intelligent individual, he talks like he never finished 3rd grade (“I ain’t a hacker on the level you people play by, but I do what I gotta.”). Sure, every character needs their own voice, but this one makes no sense and seems degrading. The settings, while far-flung and in some cases exotic, are not used well. In general, the action could have occurred anywhere from rural Montana to the boroughs of New York. The opening scene, for example, is set in Old Town Prague, but the ‘landmark’ that’s mentioned is a “fried chicken place.” Sure, there are KFCs in Old Town, but that’s hardly symbolic of a city brimming with incredible architecture. And later in Rome, they “…whizzed by the fountain of the Piazza Navona,” a place that’s usually so crowded it’s difficult to walk. The setting descriptions didn’t do anything to create an image. So, overall, the Tomb of Aradia has all the elements of a pulse-pounding, epic action/adventure. Unfortunately, I labored a bit watching Jules complete savant-like analyses and perform world-class physical feats, then repeat his mistakes while explaining himself using inexplicably poor language.

I tried this book because it was part of Kndle Scout and I really enjoyed it. It was fast paced with several twists making for a fast read. The premise is that there exists a secret organization (for all you conspiracy theorists) that seeks to recover lost artifacts, usually for their legitimate "owners". I especially liked the historical references and the character development. However, I think that this character development was somewhat on sided, spending much more time delving into Jules' obsession and his lack of social skills while other team members and even the opposition are less well developed. This is Book 1 so I expect to see a series. The epilog starts with the next expedition which tries to salvage some knowledge and artifacts lost in this book. The author provides a few reference notes to help differentiate historical fact from his " creativity". I would recommend this book/series for those interested in ancient civilization, either real or imaginary and the mixing of fact with some creative speculation.

Welcome to L.O.R.I., that's Lost Origins Recovery Institute.Personnel include:Toby - English, historian, former curator of Windsor CastleDan - American, ex-military - Army RangerCharlie - English, ex-military, techieHarpal - English, Indian, undercover agent, recon expertBridget - American, researcher, analyst, linguistand Jules - American, artifact retriever, expert in many disciplines, remembers everything he hears and sees, a loner who may or may not join L.O.R.I.They all join in a multinational journey in search of a bangle/bracelet that was stolen from Jules' mother when he was a boy. He has spent his life since then searching for this link to his mother after both parents were killed during the robbery.I enjoyed this book immensely after nominating it in the Amazon Scout program. There are hints of past adventures of the L.O.R.I. group from before they met Jules. The epilog sets the stage for a sequel beginning shortly after this ending. I'll be waiting for it.

Jules is on a global-trotting quest to recover his mother’s Arcadia bangle. A personality disorder, as portrayed in lists, categories, and personal conduct codes, makes him an interesting character. He connects with LORI, an unconventional group of archeologists. The members have good hearts but questionable methods that keep the story interesting. There is a bit of myth mingled with enhanced history which might disturb some readers, particularly one incident, but just remember it is fiction—and don’t quote anything unless you know the facts. The book is a bit long but it flows well and holds your attention.

Interesting what her life might have been.

It was well written. I always feel for the women of that Era for having no say to whom they marry.

An interesting book about the wife of Roger Mortimer, Joan de Geneville and her life and times. It started off a bit wobbly but improved a great deal. 4 Stars.Joan's early life and how she inherited from her grandparents was quite fascinating to me. Her Grandfather was Justiciar of Ireland, and one of my ancestors was also a Justiciar so I was intrigued. Her early life was a bit quiet but her marriage to Mortimer presumably was happy for many years, producing 12 living children. They were Marcher nobility, something that presumably went to Mortimer's head as he took more and more risks( the author skipped over that a bit)Roger Mortimer's relationship with Queen Isabella and the rising of the Marcher Lords against the King led to his downfall and eventual death. Joan, who had nothing to do with her husband's insurrection, lived in relative comfort after Edward III pardoned her.

I am going to assume that every poor review of this novel was left by individuals who are use to flippant and cheap period pieces. Easy to read booms, full of gallantry that sparkles. This book has incredible depth and is written in the dying language of proper English. It was wonderful. I've recommended it to my Book Club, as well as various friends and family who would appreciate it. Well done A. Bailey. I will be searching for more of your work as soon as I publish this review.

Joan's story, while centuries old, is easily identified by contemporary women. She loved & trusted an ambitious man who betrayed her. The author writes a charming love story of the early years of their marriage and fully captures the role of medieval noblewomen in managing their husbands' estates, purse, political connections as well as raising their children.Joan was a great heiress from a great family, quite a prize in herself but her husband sought a greater prize in Queen Isabella and with her deposed England's king. Roger Mortimer paid for his treason with his life. Joan and her surviving children suffered imprisonment, poverty and shame for his betrayal. The drama of Joan's discovery of her husband's calumny does fall a bit flat. Somehow given the enormity of his crimes and the devastation of her life and the lives of her children, I would have expected a more impassioned response. However, overall this is a book well worth reading and well told.

I knew little about this period of English history except stories about King Edward II and his favorite Gaveston, but the author brings it to life through the personal experiences of a minor English noble family who had three daughters and no sons to inherit vast estates in England and Ireland. Joan the eldest daughter is married at age sixteen to the immature son of a baron while the other two daughters are sent to convents to prevent them from marrying husbands who could challenge Joan's hold on her dowry lands. The wheel of fortune makes many changes in this compelling historical read. I read this book through Kindle Unlimited.

I found myself wondering repeatedy if this was a young adult book. Phrasing was very poor and editing nearly non-existant. (Make up your mind...Dispenser or Despenser?) The author repeatedly jumps forward many years within the space of one sentence as though needing to conserve words. As another reviewer mentioned, luckily I also got this book for free. I do not recommend.

It was an interesting story. Usually you see books about her husband . this was well done one review had me turned off but I decdecided to try it and I liked it. Ending seemed a bit rushed. They had at least twelve children together . when did roger begin to wander or was it ambition? A good read strong woman .

"Scholarly advice for dark times."--The New Yorker"Provides a metric ton of misery and a lot of company." --The New York Times"Teeming with aphorisms and hilarious one-liners... probably philosophy’s only beach read."--Vice"Belongs on the shelf next to the likes of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer... Thacker’s voice is quiet, a desperate whisper into the void that is both haunting and heartbreaking." --Into the Void"When life gives us lemons, Thacker refuses to make lemonade. This reads almost like notes for several books instead of a one cohesive one: the aphorism are pithy and, indeed, pessimistic, but not early as clear as the aphorists that Thacker lists in his hagiographies of pessimism. Furthermore, some of them are clever at the first read but not particularly insightful after a few, which is someone one wants from darker aphorists. I kept wondering, despite liking Thacker's more systemic (or maybe, complete), works, why I wasn't just reading Schopenhauer, Cioran, Leopardi, Lichtenberg, or Nietzsche directly. The hagiographies are interesting, although they are wildly varied in-completeness and insight.

I dont know want to do this.

Really liked this one.

I'm not a philosophy student (rather, I studied in the sciences) so I don't have the background in Kant, Nietzsche, Kafka or other philosophic authors to compare this from a literary context. If you read this straight through, you'll find the author's ability to bring you into a "nice depression" is impeccable. The depression hit me like a ton of bricks. Can this, a self-hindrance book (which is, of course, the opposite of a self-help book) bring a new perspective on things? It lowers the volume on the positive aspects of life, no matter how superficial those positive aspects are to you. Is that useful? I don't know. I had to put the book down several times since I didn't want to put myself into the black hole that the author is in. But it's hard not to go there, at least in the first section of the book. One star deducted because a lot of the first section of the book uses quotations from other pessimistic (misanthropic + nihilistic) philosophers, so the author could have tried a little harder to make some original thought. Despite the horrendous depression it brings, it'd be 5-Star work, since it's definitely clear that this is otherwise a work of literary art. This is the first - and likely the last - self-hindrance / misanthropy tome I'll purchase for my personal library. I'm satisfied living in my bubble of happiness and reading books on being positive and having authors deliver manufactured self-encouragement. I'm OK with that. I'm probably not alone, since this is why authors from Napoleon Hill to Seth Godin (and yes, even Anthony Robbins) do so well commercially. The author is probably not (in his lifetime at least) going to see that same commercial success from this type of work. That said, it doesn't mean you shouldn't read it - again, it's literary art. Not to sound trite, but there used to be a skit on Saturday Night Live called "Debbie Downer" (I'm sure YouTube will provide great reference there). The author is an authentic, real-life version of that fictional character.

This guy is a "professor of philosophy" at the New School? Well then, I must be J.S. Bach. Page after page of insight-free, witless, stream of consciousness (as in unrefined fart stream of consciousness) sixth-grade aphorisms which amount to less than nothing. Three hundred pages of this drivel doesn't amount to one subordinate clause from Schopenhauer's least inspired sentence. I would suggest not wasting your time or money. To understate the matter.

Readable, but I really enjoyed Eugene Thacker's cosmic horror trilogy better.I found the structure of quotes, aphorisms and journal entries to be mildly irritating. The author's personal misanthropy comes off as affected, like the middle school kid that wears all black to prove he's burdened by his profound thoughts.

If you're looking for a good book to curl up with on a rainy day, you couldn't do much better than this treatise on pessimism.
