Eloquent account of this Polish journalist's time in Angola, just as Angola was getting its independence. The author has written some of the most compelling stuff on modern Africa, and this book is among the best on Angola. He starts the narrative in Luanda on the eve of independence and then stays on as the country falls into civil war. I think it's strength is the way he gets inside the different groups involved and exposes the virtual ideological emptiness of the conflict. It was billed as a Cold War theater, and yet you find that many of the people were simply not very ideologically motivated. It gets you into the combat zones and shows the utter pointlessness of the war, which dragged on for some 30 years. His character sketches are intriguing and his eye for telling and memorable details makes this book a classic. Just the image of a city in which all the dogs have suddenly disappeared and abandoned the town leaves a chilling feeling of humanity reduced to its most desolate state. It's pithy and short and packs a punch.

... "I read many of the dispatches sent from Luanda in those days. I admired the opulence of human fantasy." This is Ryszard Kapuscinski's biting assessment of the quality of reportage by so many of his fellow war correspondents. Kapuscinski made necessity into a virtue. He was a reporter for the Polish News Agency, which could not afford the lavish expense accounts that so many Westerner correspondents had, who all too often had the tendency to file their dispatches from the 5-star hotel in the capital, after talking with those who frequented the bars at these hotels. Kapuscinski was either lucky, or quite prescient, (or both) managing to be in the right place at the right time. He was in Iran for the fall of the Shah, which he described in "Shah of Shahs", and in Ethiopia shortly after the fall of Haile Sellassie, which he described in "The Emperor." This book which describes the very last days of Portuguese rule in Angola in 1975 may not have the same intensity of insights as the other two books, but still, it is excellent, and is the only view that we have of these last days.Angola is rarely in the news (or of interest in the West, particularly since the end of the Cold War). It was mis-ruled by Portugal for three and a half centuries, and its principal export was slaves. This trade was so lucrative and prolific that the country is still under populated. After the downfall of the Salazar dictatorship in 1974, Portugal's new democratic leadership quickly agreed to grant the colonies their independence, which included Angola, where a guerilla war of liberation was being waged for numerous years. There were three principal liberation groups, the MPLA which was backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba, the FNLA, backed by the Western powers and Zaire, and the UNITA, backed by the Western powers and South Africa. The front was "everywhere" literally, whenever one band of these groups might collide.Kapuscinski's first chapter describes Luanda during the final days, and the exodus of the Portuguese. (Most went to Brazil.) Among the many useful insights, the author mentions the poverty of the whites, unique among European colonies. There were white children begging in the streets, and his hotel maid was Portuguese. The author went to the "front," and in so doing took at least as many chances as Filkens, the NYT correspondent who wrote "The Forever War." Kapuscinski memorably describes approaching checkpoints, manned (or more accurately, "kidded") by heavily armed boys. One never knew to which side was their allegiances, and the wrong greeting could literally mean death. Later he took the first re-supply convoy (that got through!) from Benguela to Pereira dEca, near the border with Namibia. Angola was a place where the proxy wars of the Cold War were waged, and Kapuscinski reports on the Cuban involvement, and broke the story of the South African invasion. There is an excellent appendix chapter, entitled "ABC", which covers most of the salient facts about Angola, the Portuguese mis-rule, and the war of independence. In the end the author admits an exhaustion with the living conditions and the constant dangers, and telexes home for permission to return, which was granted. In the process, he made a significant incorrect assessment: "It is more or less clear what will happen, which is that the Angolans will win,..." When he said it would "take a while" I suspect that he underestimated the extent and length of the fighting between the forces of Holden Roberto and Savimbi, which would last through 2002. Today Angola is still notorious for the number of land mines that plague the country.Overall, the book is "another day of life", of Kapuscinski, who has written an excellent account, almost certainly the best we will ever have, of the last days of Portuguese rule in Angola.

This book by Kapuscinski is another great reason why he is a brilliant author. It gives amazing on-the-ground accounts of what it was like to be in Angola during the dying days of the Portuguese empire and the burgeoning civil war. Just brilliant.

One of the best books of one of the best Polish journalists with a lot of interesting on spot information on not too well known war in Angola. Everyday evidence of life on threshold of the country's independece with its swift and dramatic changes reflected by a gifted pen. Classics and good example of the real journalist's job.

A very easy read on a slice of history with which I was unfamiliar.

An all-time favorite to which I come back every few years. A classic of memoir.

Maybe just a third of a book.I like Kapuscinski a lot--have read 4 or 5 of his books now. But here it seems the publisher is banking on his reputation and cashing in on anything they can find with his name on it. This book starts to give a finely-written account of the RK's experiences as a correspondent at the outbreak of the Angolan civil war. The story ends arbitrarily as invading armies are poised for a pivotal battle early in the war--and the author runs out of money and asks his employers to bring him home. Next comes a brief Wikipedia-like postscript describing the history and geography of Angola and a quick timeline of the rest--actually most--of the war.Read Shadow of the Sun if you want to see what this author can do, but this book is a charitable contribution to a deceptive publisher.

Excellent for understanding what life was like in Angola during the civil war. The sad thing is not much has changed since, Angolan attitudes, work ethic, dangerous streets, poor infrastructure, suffering, etc still exist in 2013.

I have really come to love reading the books written by him, he always covers everything in such simple details to such an effective degree as that you can really read it, apply it and most importantly understand it enough that you'll think back on it and still understand it more later on. You can tell he has been a teacher for more than 30+ years, as he really gets the information out there in a way everyone understands it.Often times it seems like people want to talk about "growing rooms" and lets be honest that may be great and nice for some, but for those of us who don't want anything more than a couple of plants the information really seems to be too much, in so many ways. So it was really nice to read how you can handle odors on a small scale, like negative ion generators, and how he really isn't afraid to discuss the ozone generator, and the carbon filter, as he is really going out there to educate you and teach you in detail when each system is a good choice for the price and when you would want to use each system. I walked away from reading this book going "opps" a few times to painful lessons I've learned, but still didn't know what I did wrong or how to fix them.I wished I'd read this book years ago, but when it comes time to start really planning out your area of where you are going to grow and how you'd be best to set it up, I'd first read this book and see if that really is the best idea for you, or if you are better off setting it up different. You'll walk away from reading this and feel like you have the experience of being a grower for years, as you will know how to make the right choices and avoid the mistakes of others.

I have read all of the grow guides on the net, but when I saw this book in the bookstore (I live in Switzerland, where pot is legal), I just had to buy it.It is very interesting and if you just read a few growguides available for free on the net (to get a general idea for what you're into), you'll be fine. The book is very simple to understand, and in plain english. The book needs a little reorganizing, though, as the chapters are arranged in a haphazard way (that's why it got only 4 stars instead of 5). Other than that, it is a very useful book, and a lot of information that you find in here, you won't be able to find anywhere else (including the free growguides available on the net).I think it's a good investment.

If you get this book make sure you get the new revised edition put out by Quick American Archives. The cover is a photograph of a closet, not a painting. As always Ed Rosenthal does a great job of walking you through all stages of cultivation. This new edition has a color photo section too.

I had read the previous edition and it seems a lot clearer than this one, except for the chapters that are repeated verbatum. It seems like new technology has made things more complicated instead of simpler and Ed seems to jump from one thing to another without much structure. As usual though Ed's writing is good for a laugh, not for nothing did High Times call him an expert on fertilizer. The pictures are excellent and that it is a nice change to see an affordable grow book with some good bud pictures.

Good book to get the beginner started with closet growing. It helped me in setting up my GR, with great advice about lighting, environmental concerns, feeding, growing and flowering. Read and learn before you start your hortocultural project:)

Very thorough. A lot of material to get through. I need something more at the beginner's picture book status.

This book contained many very good ideas and it's a useful guide to the homegrower

While the book is filled with good general info, it never really gets too in depth. Also, in my opinion, the information is presented rather haphazardly. Do a LITTLE research on the net and you will find all the info in this book and then some.

#1,186,325 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I read this book nearly 20 years ago and remember sobbing after finishing it. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but now realize that I was sensing the depth to which it would effect me and my life. Out of a desire to "come back to" my old Self -- one I have sorely missed lately -- I recently decided to read this book again. (I needed a new copy so that I could make fresh highlights and notations.) I'm amazed to see from where SO many of my "leanings," beliefs, and core values had come. This book had clearly laid the foundation for most -- if not all -- of my long-held interest in/study of alternative medicine and energy healing -- tools I've relied upon and successfully used for nearly two decades. More than that, this book rooted my understanding of "the way things work" in the universe and blended with the teachings of my Christian upbringing to provide me with a rich and unique perspective on how to navigate life and it's challenges. I'll tell you a secret (and non-believers may find this a fluke): Since re-starting this book two weeks ago, I've had many strange and wonderful synchronicities occur that have validated my re-discovering it. Re-reading it seems to be like hitting the "reset" button -- putting me back into the natural flow of life and returning me to the happier, more peaceful person I once was. I wish the same for you as you begin your own journey with Sogyal Rinpoche's masterpiece.

A friend recommended this to me when my mother went into hospice care. From the moment I started reading it, I was powerfully impacted, as if my eyes were being opened. Then, when my mother died much more quickly than was expected, this book continued to empower me through the process - not just of letting go - but the deeper process of understanding the very nature of life and death. My compassion, ability to forgive and my love increased powerfully. During the holiday season, I gave copies of this book to my husband, who is also being profoundly impacted by it, and friends. Now I'm thinking about ordering more copies, for family and friends. I consider this book a MUST READ for EVERYONE! .

My mother was dying. It was inevitable that the process couldn’t be reversed. She was suffering, she was frightened and it was clear that she needed emotional and physical help during her dying process.I was confused, helpless and full of fear. That time I started to read The Book of Living and Dying. This book clearly explains what a dying person needs, how to help him or her to make the process as easy as possible. I started to make some simple meditation exercises that are recommended in the book.3 weeks later I sat at her death bed, holding her hand. None of us was frightened. We felt peace, calm and love. She passed away in peace. In her last hours she told: “I am going home now.”The most important revelation I have gained from this book was how to see life and death as one whole unit. This means we can start preparing for dying while we are living our everyday life. We can understand from this book that living and dying are parts of the same natural process. The book describes buddhist teachings but it was written for the western world. It can be understood and accepted by non-buddhists and even for non-religious persons (like my mother and I).I recommand this book for those who are facing to help somebody in their dying processes and for those who are ready to prepare themselves for their own dying. This means to make a 20-30 minutes meditation exercise every day. The book is especially recommended for those healers who regularly deal with dying persons. It is clear from this book that handling death as a taboo like in the western societies, is harmful for the individuals and for the society as well. We have to speak about death as a normal process, as a natural part of our lives!

My wife is writing this review, since she is the person who ordered it:After all the accolades surrounding this book and because of my interest in Tibetan Buddhism, I was eager to read this book. I found the first half satisfying and informative; however, when I reached the part about the necessity of submission to and total trust in one's master/guru, and the Djoghen practice, I became uneasy. I decided to research Buddhist masters, and I came upon several articles about the author Sogyal Rinpoche. According to a 2017 article in U.K.'s Telegraph, this enlightened person appears to have been tempted by the excesses of the West, becoming verbally and physically abusive to followers, demanding sex from female students, and generally living a lifestyle that is the antithesis of Buddhist teachings. I regret adding to his fortune by buying this book, and I encourage other potential buyers to do a bit of research before ordering. Please know that I am in no way criticizing the practice of Buddhism in general or Tibetan Buddhism in particular. There is much merit in its teachings. There are many honorable teachers to learn from, and I intend to pursue my interest with others. For me, however, I simply cannot read another word from this book.

I'm 70-years old, and in all that time, I've read hundreds of self help books. But THIS one is definitely "a cut above." It is, quite honestly, without peer, anytime, anywhere. Although I'm entering the last chapter of my life, believe me, this magnificent volume is "must" reading for ANYONE, regardless of age, or place in life. And don't let the name scare you... this book is the single best book I've ever read on the art and science of LIVING. I only wish I didn't take so long to finally pick it up and read it. It is an essential guidebook for the rest of your life, surprisingly easy to read and fantastically well-written. KUDOS to everyone responsible for getting this important teaching and information out to the American public:)
