This book traces the main events in the life of Wes Skyles. It documents through him, the discovery of Florida's unique Karst topography and groundwater flow. Like many brilliant thinkers, Wes was often disbelieved in his information regarding his discoveries. Only years later have we realized that he was correct all along. Hopefully his seminal work, Water's Journey, will change the hearts and minds of citizens of Florida. We are lucky enough to have one of the most beautiful and available sources of groundwater, springs like Wakulla that we can only hope to restore to it's natural abundance and beauty after Wes proved how groundwater can flow. This is a must read for anyone who loves swimming, diving or the amazing nature along our coasts and within our state! As for the lack of color pictures in the book, go to the resources in the back and watch some of the many works he created. It would be impossible to get across in a photograph!

a good read, great literary content....however.....lots of black and white photos of wes and his gear,... which have been seen in hundreds of other dive books. NOT ONE SINGLE COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS OF HIS STUNNING UNDERWATER PHOTOS WHICH MADE HIM FAMOUS.....A serious oversight by the author and the publisher.

A well-written biography of an interesting guy most of us have never heard of. Really enjoyed it.

Very well written narrative captures Wes' incredible exploits as well as his commitment to protecting our springs and waterways. An exciting and inspirational reflection on an adventurous life well lived.

Drawn to the Deep is the story of the life and Lifework of Wes Skiles; a modern explorer and self made environmentalist, photographer and top notch cave diver. This book reads like an episode on the Discovery channel, keeping you engaged, on the edge of your seat at times and above all, educating you about the beauty and fragility of our natural resources. Can’t wait to go back and look up issues of the National Geographic magazines and see his work all over again! With the current news of toxic algae blooms in the waters of Florida, the timing of this book couldn’t be better! My wish would be for everyone, especially those in the Florida legislature, to read this book.

If you are interested in caving in Florida Wes was one of the great explorers. Worth the read!

This is a must read if you have ever considered buying into a partnership at an architecture firm. You owe it to yourself to do your homework and understand how the process works. Many young architects dream about hanging their shingle out but if you are unable to take that leap, the other way is to enter into a partnership or buy into a partnership at a firm.Understand the risks, and the ramifications.I have had my own sole proprietorship which I ran for seven years. I entered into several discussions with several small firms about becoming a partner but walked away from several of them because it wasn't much of a deal for me. I'm currently a principal at a larger firm. So take the time to read this cover to cover and then ask the right questions from the right financial consultants who know the field. If you do your homework, you will know the right time and value to make the right decision for yourself.

If you are either planning on selling your firm or buying into a firm I would recommend reading this book.

The book is small, but filled with very good information presented in an easy to understand format. Well worth the price.

Useful book - we need an australian equivalent. Well structured and easy to understand. I would recommend to anyone undergoing such a process.

I am treasurer of a small church, have an accounting background, and I have used quite a few different accounting software packages. While this book is fairly good, it is not updated for the current QuickBooks Online design which means you have to read the instructions in the book and then try to "translate" that into what you're actually seeing on the screen which may not be exactly as described in the book. So, the book may say "click on this button," but that button may no longer exist in the program, so you have to go looking for the new alternative. If this was just in one or two places, I wouldn't think twice about it, but it's pretty pervasive. The benefit of the book is that it does save you from having to figure out for yourself how to use QO for a non-profit (church). So, someone with some accounting and accounting software experience will probably be able to use this book successfully, but I am not sure someone without that background will be able to use this as well.

There ar not enough good books out there that really provide the tools to really help a non profit setup and maneuver through the complexities of quickbooks. It is frustrating to purchase books only to find out they don’t quite help you get the job done. This book is quite helpful, simple and an easy read for someone who does not have an accounting background.

I have found this book to be very helpful in organizing our non-profit. It will be helpful for the novice and business person that wishes to work the books in a non-profit. Helpful for the novice because it is simple to follow and gives ideas and reasons for good controls. The business person will learn the differences between business accounting and non-profits. Plus it is well laid out and easy to read. Thank you for this wonderful book, it is a real timesaver.

Very helpful, at first glance. Huge problem is that QBO updates constantly, so using a how-to book that is almost new is still out of date (screens depicted in book no longer match what you see on your monitor). That said, it's the best I've found for moving from old church software to QBO.

Detailed and informative about how to adjust QuickBooks for non profit. If a little dated. QuickBooks changes the online setup from time to time.

Don't even think about working with QuickBooks online for nonprofits without this book. This is especially true if you are setting up QuickBooks for the first time, transferring from the desktop version to the online version, or just generally new to using QuickBooks online for a nonprofit or church. I have the Kindle edition, so that I can open the book on the same computer I'm using for QuickBooks. The book isn't perfect, but it's indispensable. Some sections require re-reading more than once to understand. It would have been helpful if the authors walked the reader through some more examples. Combining the book with Google searches for specific QuickBooks questions helps a lot. Be sure to pay attention to the blue banners in the text... They contain critical information.

This book exceeded my expectations. It is my new "go to" reference guide for QBO. You will not be disappointed.

Lee, the “Marble Man” of the Confederacy, who profoundly illustrates the distance between the myths and realities of leadership. Lee was admired by many white Americans for his martial valor and personal virtue. That admiration was given even though Lee lost the Civil War and miserably failed the greatest moral test of the nineteenth century by defending a way of life built on white supremacy and black slavery. His leadership consisted in what he symbolized, then, not in what achieved — or rather, thankfully failed to achieve..Then come several chapters in which McChrystal and his coauthors pair leaders under six headings: Founders (Walt Disney and Coco Chanel), Geniuses (Albert Einstein and Leonard Bernstein), Zealots (Maximilien Robespierre and Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi), Heroes (Zheng He and Harriet Tubman), Power Brokers (Boss Tweed and Margaret Thatcher), and Reformers (Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr.). These leaders often exercised influence despite their personal flaws (e.g., Boss Tweed) or the immorality of their causes (e.g., Zarqawi). As you read each short “life,” you come to realize that leaders exercise an important role, but not in the way that a simplistic definition portrays. Too simple an understanding of leadership results in myths about leadership, which McChrystal, Eggers, and Mangone describe this way:• The Formulaic Myth: In our attempt to understand process, we strive to tame leadership into a static checklist, ignoring the reality that leadership is intensely contextual, and always dependent upon particular circumstances.• The Attribution Myth: We attribute too much to leaders, having a biased form of tunnel vision focused on leaders themselves, and neglecting the agency of the group that surrounds them. We’re led to believe that leadership is what the leader does, but in reality, outcomes are attributable to far more than the individual leader.• The Results Myth: We say that leadership is the process of driving groups of people toward outcomes. That’s true, to a point, but it’s much broader than that. In reality, leadership describes what leaders symbolize more than what they achieve. Productive leadership requires that followers find a sense of purpose and meaning in what their leaders represent, such as social identity or some future opportunity.The key concepts to take away from the authors’ description of these myths are the importance of context, relationship, and symbolism in leadership. According to the authors, when those concepts are taken into account, leadership can be defined as “a complex system of relationships between leaders and followers, in a particular context, that provides meaning to its members.” This implies that leaders exercise a twofold role as “a bottom-up servant to enable action and a top-down symbol to motivate and provide for meaning.”I write this review as a Pentecostal minister and editor of a Christian leadership magazine — intentionally named Influence, by the way. Though Leaders is a secular leadership book, it teaches several valuable lessons that can benefit pastors and other church leaders. I’ll close with four that came repeatedly to mind as I read the book:First, as pastors and leaders in your church, there is no fool-proof, multi-step formula for becoming or producing other leaders. You should have a leadership pipeline and provide leadership training for your staff and volunteers, but you should also keep your eyes open for influencers who arise through other means. Paul’s leadership pipeline was the Damascus Road, after all, not the Jerusalem church.Second, share the work of ministry with others. Too often, we speak of what Pastor So-and-so accomplished at Such-and-such Church, as if he or she accomplished everything alone. But as Paul put it, the congregation is a body in which every member must do its part. So, share the work and spread the credit around.Third, tend to your soul. Jesus said, “Follow me.” Paul wrote, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” People will follow your leadership if you personally embody the joy and life-changing power of the gospel. Who you are as a leader is as important as what you do, in other words, because who you are as a spiritual leader symbolizes the life of meaning and eternal significance that people aspire to in Christ.Fourth, and finally, use your leadership for good. Both Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King Jr. were Christians. And yet, at the height of their leadership, separated by a century, they exerted influence to achieve morally contradictory goals — Lee in defense of white supremacy and King in defense of racial equality. At the end of the day, however one defines leadership, shouldn’t doing the right thing be the most basic test of our leadership?

Reading Leaders: Myth and Reality truly is like a journey. The book examines the concept of leadership from many angles, and refreshingly, reflects on the topic from both a male and female perspective.As a women who has spent decades in a male-dominated industry, I have read many tomes on leadership, all of which left me thirsting for more. Why? Because I could never see myself or my female colleagues in them. Indeed, these authors state, “…the gender imbalance in leadership is both disturbing and unhealthy, and has deep roots in the history of leadership.” Are there no outstanding female leaders? Of course there are, and McChrystal’s book provides the most balanced approach I’ve read to date.Other readers, no doubt, will wax poetically about the merits of the book’s research, the clever method of examination, and the thought-provoking approach. And, as both a leader in my field and an academic, I would agree and applaud the effort.But honestly, the authors had me at Coco Channel. Harriet Tubman and Margaret Thatcher sealed the deal. From both a leadership and a reader’s perspective, I was hooked. The authors state, “Still, the many men, and far too few women, who stand atop their pedestals today reflect the ways in which we derive meaning, usually as a symbol of the values and virtues that we collectively espouse or spurn as a society.”In today’s society, we have a lot of self-examination left to finish to decide which values and virtues we will embrace as a society. Leaders: Myth and Reality, no doubt, will help us on this journey, as we assess the myths and realities of our current leaders. And, while Leaders: Myth and Reality hooked me with Coco Channel, the book challenged me to question my thoughts about leadership in a healthy and constructive way. What more could we ask of the authors?

This book is an excellent perspective on what we should seek from our leaders--and what we should demand from ourselves. There is no perfect leader, and thusly, followers must reckon what qualities are necessary for a leader to be successful and to represent the values that we hold dear. Then, it is the follower's responsibility to help elevate those leaders.In short, leaders are incredibly important, but without followers to mobilize those leaders which will make us all better, we as a country will fall short. If we stand a chance at separating leadership from fame, this is the book to help us do it.Perhaps most importantly, too, we can't always count on a genius, a power broker, a reformer, or some combination thereof to save the day. Leaders are not perfect, but they are perfectly human, as are we all. This book should not only instruct followers on how (and why) to elevate leaders which advance kindness and equality, it should teach us all about the leaders we can become. Whether as a parent, a teacher, a coach, or a politician, looking back at Plutarch should teach us all how to be the best leaders we can--and why our role matters so much.This is a book for everyone--if we can all agree (or at least discuss) what we need from our leaders, perhaps we can change the world for the better. Five stars.

I loved how the complete spectrum was covered in this book. The authors discuss leaders from different time period, different genders, different styles, etc.! In addition, the book connects these leaders, who lead in completely different walks of life, to show how they shared common success in their techniques. What a great idea for a book, especially in this day and age, in which our leaders at the highest levels struggle to manage some of the largest conglomerations and entities in human history.

Even though this book didn't have some of the newer helicopters I was interested in, it is still a good book. The book was Copyrighted in 1984 and is a great representation of helicopters prior to that time. I knocked off one star because the author uses some charts that I found of no use and there is color drawings of many helicopters but a lack of actual color photographs. Don't let that stop you from buying this book, it is chalked full of good information for someone wanting to learn about the history of the whirly bird from start to 1984. Now it would be nice to have a version from 1984 to current.

The entire family enjoys this wonderful book.

I purchased this for my young son who is obsessed with helicopters. Tons of pictures and the descriptions are quite detailed.

Simply a great reference book! Lots of illustrations with color plates, three-view drawings, technical specifications, performance data and a brief history of each aircraft. It is divided up into historical sections and covers virtually every nation that has build a helicopter, auto-gyro or VTOL aircraft. I use it for model building, model making and for our new model kit lines. The drawings are accurate and are a great source to confirm or dispute model kits and preparation for making them. I have yet to find a better source as this for helicopters and VTOL craft. Of the highest quality as only Italy can produce!
