Review

"In this moving and informative book, former Newsweek reporter Denworth recounts her emotional and intellectual quest to help her deaf infant son hear. [...] This is a book that parents, particularly of deaf children, may find indispensable."—Publishers Weekly "All parents will recognize the moments of both terror and pride that mark the journey; parents of deaf children will garner both information and insights."—Kirkus Reviews "Eloquently explains how hearing works...An excellent book for anyone with deafness in the family or with a desire to better understand how people hear, why hearing loss occurs, and how it is treated."—Booklist “A beautiful book that combines superb scientific reporting with powerful and deeply enjoyable storytelling. Her quest to acquire every shred of knowledge she can to help her deaf son is an odyssey that all parents who worry about their children (i.e. all parents) can intimately relate to. Her discoveries about the workings of language and the intricacies of brain development will change the way you think about hearing, speaking, and selfhood. And her fascinating exploration of the politics of deaf identity is sure to spark a larger conversation about how we talk about, think about, and treat children with special needs in our time.”—Judith Warner, author of Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety “Read this if you have ears or ever interact with humans. What a moving and brilliant tour of the scientific, emotional and political landscape of hearing impairment. As a reader, I'm grateful to Lydia Denworth. As a writer, I'm jealous.”—David Shenk, author of The Genius in All of Us and The Forgetting “A lucid, engaging, and thoughtful description of the science of hearing. If you are interested in hearing, speech, and language —as a parent, educator, clinician, or scientist—this book fills an important gap and is a terrific read. Careful about the science and sensitive to the psychological complexities, Denworth provides a masterful account of the path from ear to the brain, from sounds to words.”—David Poeppel, Professor of Psychology and Neural Science, New York University “Lydia Denworth’s beautiful personal account and thorough investigation connect the dots between her son’s hearing loss, the essential import of spoken language on the developing brain, and what parents, doctors, and teachers can gain from a deeper understanding of how the mind acquires language.”—Dana Suskind, MD, Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago and Director of The Thirty Million Words Initiative “An affecting and searching personal story and a fascinating job of science reporting, specifically the science of audiology—how we hear, why some of us don't, and how an amazing, but controversial, technology was invented. Lydia Denworth’s son Alex, the beautiful boy at the center of the personal story, is lucky to have a mother like her. The rest of us are lucky to have such a perceptive, lucid, and touching book.”—Richard Bernstein, author of A Girl Named Faithful Plum

The day after Lydia Denworth’s son Alex was born, he failed a routine hearing test given to all newborns. Probably just mucus in the ears, the nurse explained. It turned out not to be. Thanks to a congenital malformation, Alex had too little hearing in both ears to hear language. This was a crisis not just of the ears but of the brain itself, as Denworth explains in her book. A brain that has not had full exposure to language by age three is unlikely to learn language fluently and naturally, with lifelong consequences for the child.Denworth threw herself into researching how hearing, language, and cochlear implants work in order to help her son. The result is this book.As a science writer Denworth has written up what she learned, and the result is so comprehensive, wide-ranging, and well-written that it is essential reading for any parent of a child with hearing loss. Denworth has gone further into the scientific literature than any other writer I know of on this subject, and she interviewed a Who’s Who of people involved in developing cochlear implants. The result is a fascinating and magisterial book. The narrative line of the book begins with her early suspicions that something was wrong. At age two, Alex’s scores for receptive and expressive language were in the eighth and sixth percentiles respectively. They tried hearing aids, but ultimately opted for a cochlear implant. The implant worked. Denworth writes,Now, after one year of using the cochlear implant, the change was almost unbelievable. His expressive language had risen to the sixty -third percentile and his receptive language to the eigthty-eighth percentile. He was actually above age level on some measures. And that was compared to hearing children. I stared at the Post-it note and then at the therapist. “Oh my god!” was all I could say. I picked Alex up and hugged him tight. “You did it,” I said. From the evaluation, we went straight to Clarke so Alex could go back to school. The director’s office was next door to his classroom. I knocked on the door frame and Teresa Boemio looked up from her desk. “How did it go?” she asked as soon as she saw me. She knew where we’d been.“Pretty well.” I handed over the Post-it note. “Wow!” she cried. “WOW!”To explain the remarkable success of cochlear implants Denworth offers the most detailed history of them published in the popular press to date. There have been a number of excellent academic papers on the history of cochlear implants, including Mara Mills’s “Do Signals Have Politics? Inscribing Abilities in Cochlear Implants,” but no really good book-length treatment of it. Denworth comes close to giving us that, with fascinating and moving interviews with pioneers such as Graeme Clark, the founder of Cochlear Corporation, and Michael Merzenich, who did pioneering work at UCSF in the physiology of hearing and in brain plasticity. She also gives welcome credit to patients such as Rod Saunders and Charles Graser, who had test devices surgically implanted into their heads at great personal risk. She captures the tension and drama of those early experiments. For example, in 1978, Clark finally tried testing Saunders in a relatively realistic way:Until then, they had done only closed sets—reciting words that were part of familiar categories, such as types of fruit. Speech in real life, of course, isn’t so predictable; open-set testing throws wide the possibilities. Angela Marshall was hesitant, fearing it wouldn’t work. “I said, if we fail, we fail,” says Clark. As the group stood watching with bated breath, Marshall presented one unrelated word at a time.“Ship,” she said.“Chat,” replied Saunders. Completely wrong.“Goat.”“Boat,” said Saunders. Closer.“Rich.”“Rich,” said Saunders. He had gotten one right!By the end of the tests, Saunders had gotten 10 to 20 percent of the open-set words correct. That’s not the least bit impressive by today’s standards , but it was hugely significant at the time for a man who was profoundly deaf. Clark was overcome . “I knew that had really shown that this was effective,” he says. He pointed down the hallway of the hospital where we sat. “I was so moved, I simply went into the lab there and burst into tears of joy.”The invention of these devices is a hugely important and dramatic event that deserves a full-length book treatment. Denworth has not given us this, but she has given us important parts of one.The book also gives us a sweeping overview of advances in the science of hearing and cognition. She discusses, for example, the work of neuroscientist Helen Neville, who spent decades studying how deafness alters the way the brain processes sound and language. She discusses research using advanced brain-scanning equipment, such as that done by Anu Sharma and David Poeppel, who are trying to work out what exactly happens in the brain on a neural level after sound hits the eardrum. The bottom line, Denworth says, is that while scientists have learned a great deal about the detailed physiology of the brain, they are still struggling to explain how the brain actually understands language. She writes, “I heard a radio interviewer ask esteemed neuroscientist Eric Kandel of Columbia University what mysteries remain about the brain. ‘Almost everything,’ answered Kandel.”“Almost everything” accounts for why, despite the voluminous research that Denworth has assembled and synthesized, there is still remarkably little concrete advice to be given for teaching deaf children how to hear. General principles are well known: the sooner a kid has access to sound, the better; exposure to a language – any language – early on is critical; the more language interaction a kid has with parents and peers, the better; in teaching reading, attention to the phonetic sound of language is crucial; and, unfortunately, it helps to be wealthy and privileged, because in such households language is used more often and more richly. And so on.But concrete advice is sparse. There still is no How-To manual that makes raising a deaf child as straightforward as a craft project in a garage. Not that such a thing will ever be possible, because every deaf child is deaf in a different way, requiring a unique and specialized approach. And that is a job that will inevitably fall to the parent. (Parents and CI users should also read Leigh and Christiansen’s excellent book Cochlear Implants in Children: Ethics and Choices. While now dated with respect to the technology, it still offers a great deal of excellent material on language acquisition and many other matters related to CIs.)Still, some things have been learned. Denworth questions the common assertion that learning ASL diminishes a deaf child’s ability to master spoken language. She discusses the work of Marc Marschark, who has written, “There has never been any real evidence that learning to sign interferes with deaf children’s learning to speak.” Indeed, Denworth writes, the exact opposite may be true: the process of learning two languages simultaneously may in fact enrich the developing brain. Accordingly, she brings in an ASL tutor in an effort to expose Alex to sign language. This fails, largely because Alex doesn’t get very interested. But also, she points out, just exposing a child to ASL with periodic tutoring simply isn’t enough to teach them the language. A second language has to be learned fully and immersively, and maintained over time, to yield cognitive benefits. And that is hard to do with ASL because it is very much a minority language.Denworth offers a fascinating discussion in recent research in the importance of executive function in learning language. Executive function refers the brain’s ability to integrate various streams of information — basically, it’s the ability to synthesize them and work with the results in a controlled way. “The fact that many deaf children show delays in age-appropriate language means they may also be delayed in executive function,” Denworth writes. “Too much structure or overprotectiveness— something parents of deaf kids are prone to—compounds the problem by further stifling the development of executive function skills.” I can relate to this personally, because my parents, while loving, were not overprotective: every summer they tossed me into the clutches of a sleepaway camp, where I had to learn to fend for myself. I hated a good deal of it at the time, but it certainly taught me, ah, executive function. She also writes of the cognitive benefits of music and poetry. “Old-fashioned children’s rhymes such as Mother Goose include alliteration, assonance, rhyme, and repetition…kindergartners who got more musical training demonstrated greater phonological awareness than those who got less,” she writes. I concur with this too. My parents also tossed me into Hebrew school, which bored me most of the time, but the frequent singing trained my ear for the rhythms of language. I played the recorder in the fifth grade, no doubt producing a howl more like a dog’s than the Philharmonic’s, but it was exactly what my brain needed at the time. My fascination with poetry led me to memorize many poems – I can still recite Yeats, Stevens, and Tolkien by heart – and that shaped my sense of the rhythms and prosodies of the spoken word. These are all helpful things to know and do, but basically, the sum total of scientific advice still comes down to this: Deaf children need full exposure to a language —any language— as soon as possible. “Early access to language— any language— and parent-child interaction matter more than anything else,” she writes.Denworth also discusses the important new issue of bilateral implantation. I’ve been bilateral since 2007, but a good deal of the science Denworth covered was new to me. “The average hearing person can find the source of a sound to within seven degrees of error,”Denworth writes. “Bilateral implant patients can do it to about twenty degrees.” I don’t think I could do it that well, because my ears are so different, as I frequently discuss in my blog entries (such as here). Unfortunately, Denworth overlooks Arlene Romoff’s “Listening Closely: A Journey to Bilateral Hearing,” which would have enriched her discussion. This is surprising, given how comprehensive her research has been.Cochlear implants are not universally successful; Denworth discusses the wide variation in outcomes. Some children don’t do that well with cochlear implants, and reasons why are complex and often difficult to untangle. But they are usually successful, and that success rate is increasing. In a moving paragraph, Denworth writes,But hearing aids alone had not been enough for Alex. The transformation came with the cochlear implant. Like the difference between candles and fluorescents, Alex’s residual hearing registered the world dimly and imprecisely except within a few small circles of light, while his cochlear implant lit everything up brightly if unnaturally. Once he had seen everything clearly, he could make better use of the warmth and ambience he got from his natural hearing, and he knew what lay in the shadows. Language followed.“I Can Hear You Whisper” has many strengths, but perhaps the greatest is how Denworth has synthesized an enormous amount of material and crafted a compelling and clear book out of it. I’ve spent a great deal of time sifting through scientific papers myself, and I can attest to how hard it is to figure out which ones are truly important and to write about them in a clear and compelling way. This book is a compelling achievement and will be essential reading for parents, cochlear implant users, and anyone interested in the physiology of hearing for a long time to come.

It would be a mistake to view this book as just some sort of guide for parents of children with hearing loss, for at its heart is nothing less than a wonderful story of what it means to be a parent. Indeed, while the book provides a fascinating and well-researched examination of the science, sociology and politics of hearing loss, its animating feature is the author’s voice. It is the voice of a loving mother with whom any parent will easily identify and cheer on.Highly recommended.

I am a personality theorist. Deafness is one of my interests. It sickens me to see professionals treat people who are deaf as broken. This leads many otherwise well-intentioned helpers to pressure these folks to imitate normal, a way of living that guarantees deaf people will live painful lives. This same thing happens to people with Asperger's. No coincidence the personalities of people in both these groups have so many similarities. What's the alternative? To see deafness as a minority personality. And to see the differences deaf people have from the rest of us as a richness to be learned from and a courage to be admired. In this way, this book is amazing. All of it, the wonderfully clear, scientific background and the heartfelt stories, reveal much of this richness and many moments of courage.Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful book. It tells the personal journey of a journalist and her family after they discover that their third son is deaf - the testing and difficult choices to be made among the options for treatment and education for their son. In the process, she shares with the reader the results of her research into the history of treatment interventions and education for the deaf, including the many heated controversies; the science and historical development of hearing aids and cochlear implants; as well as research into language learning and cognition for children (and adults) with severe or total hearing loss. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the subject.

I Can Hear You Whisper is a thoroughly researched, beautifully written and very engaging account of the physiology of hearing, brain plasticity, deaf culture and a mother’s pursuit to both understand and help her son, Alex. Denworth provides a wonderful balance between the science and the complex history of deafness, on the one hand, and her own family’s struggle to grasp what it means to deal with a child’s severe hearing impairments, on the other. Denworth has assembled a fascinating and detailed account of the development of the Cochlear implant both from a scientific standpoint as well as the controversy it caused within the deaf community. Indeed, one of the many unexpected treasures in this book is a history of deaf culture and what it means to identify as deaf in a hearing world. Through superb storytelling and an excellent grasp of the underlying science, the book explores the many aspects of brain development and language. One of her many gifts as an author is to sift through enormous amounts of material (both written research and dozens of interviews) and assemble a clear, understandable and fascinating explanation of the science of language and how hearing affects so many aspects of how we learn. At its heart though this book is a wonderfully inspiring story of a mother’s love for her son and her quest to help him. And what’s a better read than a love story with a happy ending?

I’ve read several books in Carole’s series and enjoyed them very much. I’d say this is my favorite so far.I’ve always had a fascination with the Mayan society. What you’ll read here is fascinating stuff. How did they live? What was their society like? How did they construct their pyramids? So many more questions and so many more answers abound.Among their many contributions is the concept or zero. Of something being nothing. They mapped the skies with telescopes. They even performed brain surgery. This is just of few of their contributions. A funny things is, despite all of this, they never discovered the use of the wheel. I thought that was so odd. All that knowledge and they missed the wheel. Now I wonder how did they build their cities and pyramids.Learn about famous Mayans and more with the wonderful glossary provided at the back of the book. I found it handy and fun to be able to correctly pronounce words and get a better grasp of what they meant. I was thrilled by the wealth of information gleaned from these pages.Welcome to Carole’s Mayan Empire. Read about many amazing things and let your eyes wander over the colorful illustrations. Have fun and learn.I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

Carole's book accurately describes the evolution of Mayan culture. The author shows how the Mayans carved history into stone. There are considerable descriptions of the countryside including the Yucatan Peninsula, trade routes, plazas, ballcourts and markets. The Mayans were great hunters of animals like turkeys and deer. The people ate foods like maize and corn. The kingdom consisted of royalty like the king, the priesthood, merchants, laborers and peasants. Famous people included Itzamn- a Mayan warrior and leader. There are wonderful illustrations of the Mayan countryside by Paula Tabor.Overall, "If You Were Me and Lived In...the Mayan Empire" is a wonderful introduction to a fantastic component of our global culture. The book is written simply with many beautiful illustrations to teach young children the fundamentals of Mayan life, arts and crafts, food and popular historical sites like the Yucatan Peninsula. Carole's book would be very helpful for students from the 3rd grade onward. In addition, this book on the particulars of Mayan culture would be excellent for use during periodic readings by a professional librarian.

This historical story of a once thriving nation, which can be traced back to 1800 BC... Just imagine if you had lived then, you might have been born around 572 BC! The amazing thing was that they wrote their own history from the very beginning and produced magnificent architectural buildings well before they were seen in the Americas...Carole Roman, with the illustrated help by Paula Tabor, has provided us with over 50 pages of intensive historical data and paintings that beautifully present children, and adults, with a comprehensive study of the Mayan Empire. Life was hard and women worked constantly to provide food and clothing for the family. Men and boys would hunt for food, including turkey, deer, iguanas, et.al., but they had no knives so used stones and flint as their sharp-edge tools. Every part of the animals were used, not only for food, but for clothing, etc. Each home had a shrine to their god and then the day began to do the daily work...giving a share to the king first and then using the rest of your goods in support of your family. It was interesting to see how much of their daily living is still similar to today's life...including, for women, to wear jewelry and make their own makeup to color their cheeks, although I admit to being shocked when I learned that they purposefully changed physical characteristics of their children in order to enhance what they considered beautiful... Even more bizarre were what they did to teeth...Whew!All in all, I was happy to learn about it all, but glad I'm living during the time we are...There is a special section of contributions of the Mayan which adds greatly to the value of this early society... Learning about this Empire certainly spotlights how much we have learned from the past...and how much of our daily activities lead forward to the future... This was one of the more important books in this historical series and is highly recommended...GABixlerReviewsPaperback provided for Review

I have loved reviewing these books for Roman! I enjoy learning about new places myself. This one however, I liked to learn about it, but am so thankful I didn't live during this time. These are such fun books for kids. They explore different cultures. They get to learn the terms that were used during that time, the writing, and customs, all such great things for children to be exposed to.I was a little horrified in this book with some of the practises that the Mayans had...shaping babies heads.....it was definitely one of the more interesting books I have read of Roman's.I love being exposed to new things, and this children's book taught me a lot of new things. If you have little people around you these are great books to add to your collections.Source: I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated in any way for this review. These are my own PERSONAL thoughts.

Review

Recent years have seen a marked increase in the popular and ecumenical appeal of icons (for centuries an integral feature of Orthodox Christianity). Jim Forest's Praying With Icons offers a simple introduction to the tradition of icons with special emphasis on their practical function in the spiritual life. Beautifully illustrated both with color plans and b/w photography, Praying With Icons begins with a history of iconography. Icons are not simply illustrations or "art" in the usual sense, but aids to prayer and contemplation, windows on the divine. Forest also provides a personal and practical guide to how one prays with icons. Forest then concludes with a series of meditative reflections on some of the most typical icons, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, Christ's Baptism, the Transfiguration, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, representations of Mary, the trinity, and the Saints. Praying With Icons is a superlative introduction to icons and is highly recommended for readers seeking to expand their spiritual experience to encompass the entire Christian spiritual legacy. --Midwest Book Review

I read Jim Forest's _Praying with Icons_ a few years ago when it first appeared. I just finished re-reading it, and am even more impressed this time around. Anyone familiar with Forest's other books knows how comfortably fluid his style is, and how insightful his ideas are. Both of these qualities make this the single best introduction to icons I know.To my mind, there are three different but interrelated aspects of this book that are especially worth noting. The first is Forest's argument that "beauty bears witness to God," and that in depicting holy things beautifully, icons enhance our relationship with the Divine. This is a point well worth considering. Too often, I fear, beauty in the context of worship is either dismissed as irrelevant (all that matters is the word), venerated for its own sake (high church preciousness), or overdone and distractingly gaudy. But Forest reminds us that the beauty of icons is intended to aid in the transfiguration of those who pray before them. Icons are images of the wholeness of God, and they convey and impart some of that wholeness to us through their beauty. It takes a great deal of artistry to manifest that kind of beauty. The second point worth noting is Forest's observation that the writing/painting of an icon is in itself an act of worship and service, entered into reverently and prayerfully. There are traditions that dictate how the wood is prepared, how the colors are selected, what they represent, and so on. The care and love with which icons are made is a good reminder that all work with God's creation is, or ought to be, mindful and reverential. The fruits of all our mental and physical labor are, in one manner of speaking, iconic. The third especially noteworthy aspect of Forest's treatment is his tie-in of prayer with icons. It might seem that the connection between the two is obvious, but I'm not sure this is the cas, at least not in the contemporary U.S.. I've been in many homes where icons are displayed as curiosities, by totally secular hosts, on the walls right next to African masks and Peruvian weavings. Forest's reflections on prayer--that it involves the whole person, not just the intellect, that it requires the cultivation of stillness and silence, that a good prayer life is one that requires a great deal of deliberate discipline, and that the goal of our prayer life is theosis--are wonderful. In addition, as earlier reviewers have pointed out, the last 150 pages of the book discuss specific icons--Christ, Mary, the saints, the Transfiguration, etc--pointing out their language, their significance, and their histories. Readers of Forest's book will be well prepared to begin praying with icons, and to move on to other reflections on icons such as John of Damascus' _On the Divine Images_ or Leonid Ouspensky & Vladimir Lossky's _The Meaning of Icons_.Finally, the illustrations, in color as well as black-and-white, are fabulous. A book to read and re-read.

Beautifully written book that is both easy to read and profoundly aware of the theology and mystery behind icons within the Orthodox liturgical and theological traditions. No detail in an icon goes unnoticed in this book, and I originally purchased it as part of an inquiry class. I would absolutely recommend this book to any inquirer into Eastern Orthodoxy or Eastern Catholicism, or any Orthodox/Byzantine Catholic looking to learn more about their own traditions.

If one desires pure Orthodox teaching, avoid the mixed opinions of this author. Instead, cling to the humble teaching of the Church Fathers: maturity in praying will follow.https://www.amazon.com/001-Philokalia-Complete-Nikodimos-Markarios/dp/0571130135

It's well written and overall a good read and reference book. Have already recommended it to my friends. I liked the book so much I now have the ebook and hard copy.

I had always looked at Icons and labeled them 'primitive christian art'. But after reading Jim Forest's book 'Praying with Icons', I have fallen in love with iconography. The Icon artist does not paint without intention; each item in an icon has theological significance. For me, reading this book, has been a journey, an opportunity to reflect and deepen my faith. The excerpts from the Orthodox writings and liturgy are profoundly moving. It also is a lesson to view ALL religious art in a deeper way. What was the artist trying to communicate? How did he feel about his subject matter? Why did he choose the colors, are they significant to his vision? What compositional elements did the artist use to communicate his message? These are some of the questions one can ask when they view ANY religious art.Lastly, an icon or a painting, can bring one to prayer; where one can clear away the clutter of modern life to reach that inner place within where one encounters truth, and communicates with the God who loves us.

Absolutely wonderful intro to living with and praying with icons. Very easy and enjoyable to read. Great history and info about icons, both as religious items and pieces of art. Inspirational and spiritual. I'm Episcopalian, and I now have a icon corner that includes the Mt. Sinai Pantocrator and the Theotokos of Vladimir, among others. Beautiful!!

As a Roman Catholic deacon who has recently begun writing icons, I am very impressed with this beautiful book by Jim Forest. I found Part I - In the Image of God especially helpful in his description of the qualities of an icon, color in iconography and the rules of an icon painter. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about iconography.

I enjoy reading this on my kindle and the fact that it can read to me! I've recently had surgery and cannot wear my glasses yet wanted to know the contents of the book. I appreciate the approach of the author in composition and use of language. It is simply well done and comprehensive.

Review

“This is a well-documented introduction to unionization efforts by often marginalized, behind-the-scenes workers.”—Booklist“Powerful, sobering, and timely, this is a much-needed global examination of poverty wages.”—Foreword Reviews“Stunning in its breadth and impact, filled with vivid characters from many countries who speak in as many languages, the book is an epic achievement—it shows us globalization from the perspective of the people who do its work.”—Linda Gordon, author of The Second Coming of the KKK“With common sense and a lot of fire, low-wage workers across the globe are building social movements. Crafted with corazón, this book is a crisply paced, panoramic labor history of the here and now.”—Vicki L. Ruiz, author of From Out of the Shadows“A vivid rendering of the human impact of free trade policies and neoliberal restructuring across the globe. Annelise Orleck tells the stories of members of the global ‘precariat’ in the Philippines, Cambodia, Bangladesh, the US, and elsewhere, and their struggles for a living wage. A welcome addition to courses on social inequalities, social movements, and social change, it will shift how students see the hamburgers they eat and the clothes they wear.”—Professor Arlene Stein, Institute for Research on Women at Rutgers University“Annelise Orleck takes us on an inspiring journey across Asia, the Americas, and Europe into the world of low-wage organizing. With an ethnographer’s eye, historian’s perspective, and activist’s passion, she not merely charts the precariousness of work under a rapacious capitalism but captures the power of protest to transform lives. A must for classes in Labor, Globalization, and Gender.”—Professor Eileen Boris, Hull Professor of Feminist Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara“Essential reading for any law student or legal professional seeking to harness law in service of social justice. As she illuminates the precarity uniting workers around the globe, Orleck calls out the laws and legal structures that have failed them, while also highlighting creative legal strategies for demanding dignity and basic security.”—Professor Karen Tani, Assistant Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley“A wonderful and urgent history-of-the-present. I often struggle with finding powerful and evocative treatments of contemporary social movements that measure up to the riveting, richly contextualized histories we have for the civil rights era. This book does that—and embeds US struggles in a global movement for anti-poverty wages and humane conditions.”—Professor Jeanne Theoharis, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and author of A More Beautiful and Terrible History“Annelise Orleck skillfully weaves an inspiring global narrative of protest, coalition and empowerment—a narrative essential to students of oral history, testimony and witness, and activism in the face of a global economy of indifference and disposability. This is a model of engaged scholarship, empathic and respectful toward its subjects, enabling to its readers.”—Professor Marianne Hirsch, William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Professor in the Institute for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Columbia University“Bursting with the heartrending voices of the precariat…this book captures the unspeakably inhumane working conditions and courageous determination driving the global uprisings against unrestrained capitalism. A must read for students of history, women and feminist studies, class and labor, race and ethnicity, and international studies, it is a twenty-first-century grassroots primer for social justice organizing, and a clarion call to exalt human beings over the insatiable hungry ghosts of profit and consumption.”—Rhonda Y. Williams, author of Concrete Demands and Professor and John L. Seigenthaler Chair in American History, Vanderbilt University

An easy read with inspiring, and anger-producing, stories about the struggle for safe working conditions and fair pay around the world. Wonderful photos by Liz Cooke. The people differ, but the well-written, readable book well-illustrates the commonality of the problems, the reasons leaders emerge and the desperate need for change and better solutions.

Review

“This is a most beautiful book to look at and to read, and it’s a courageous one, too, for as the author herself says, ‘making broth is an experience in delayed gratification,’ not something we have much experience with today. But this patient tending of the pot which makes full use all the ingredients we bring into our kitchens, is perhaps just what’s needed to foster mindfulness, deliciousness and health. I love the promise and stillness of Broth and Stock from the Nourished Kitchen.” — Deborah Madison, author of Vegetable Literacy“Many people have been starting to discover the health benefits of simple, basic broth, and discovering how much richness and complexity it can add to any dish. Broth and Stock from the Nourished Kitchen will help you discover the wisdom of your grandparents’ approach to eating and will get you thinking about what you can do with broth. Even the most experienced cook will be inspired to create something new.” — Anya Fernald, CEO and Co-Founder of Belcampo Meat Co. and author of Home Cooked

I love browsing cookbooks and food books. Broth & Stock challenged me to think of the complexity involved in a common broth. It's easy to just grab a box of stock for a quick meal, but I loved learning some different ideas and techniques to add more flavor to my dishes. The photography in this book is beautiful - I loved that there were pictures for all the recipes. I also appreciated when the recipes told how long the broth took to make and how much broth a recipe would make.I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review.

This is a good book that was well thought out and has lovely photographs of most (or maybe even all) recipes. The quality of this book is equivalent to her first cookbook, which was also very good. I'm not totally amazed by the book but in jenny's defense I already knew how to make stocks, broths, and soups from them. I merely got it to support her and the traditional foods lifestyle :) and because it was priced as cheap as some magazines out there now. I learned some new terms/recipes from other cultures such as dashi, remouillage (you'll have to read the book to learn that one :p), and the lime soup from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. It's a small book that is a rather quick read and starting stock can be done that same day if you already have a traditionally stocked kitchen -- that was a fun plus!! All in all I'm happy with my purchase, I'll use the tips and recipes, and I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys traditional cooking. One more thing: I really appreciate how jenny listed the different teas (infant, chicken, beef) and also provided ingredient suggestions to suit your personal taste as a morning broth routine is something I'm considering.

This looks to be a fine book. It give a historical perspective of stock and broth. How it was a ubiquitously present in all kitchens. The soup pot was a necessary utility of the kitchen and still is for anyone who is economically inclined. Using the leftover carcass in boiling water to extract the nutrients inside. And getting to the leftover bits of meat still attached to the bones. Bone broth is good for you and your pets. I am excited to try out the recipes. For very little money you can provide healthy nutrious meals via stock or broth. I recommend this book to friends and foe alike.

I pre-ordered my book and received it today. Flipping through the pages I can see it was carefully thought-out step by step. The pictures and recipes are wonderful. I can't wait to get started. I would definitely recommend this book for every kitchen. I will be ordering another for my daughter for Christmas.

I've followed Nourished Kitchen and that way of eating for many years. I really enjoy the lifestyle of eating whole foods that offer more nutrition instead of boxed, processed convenience foods which always left me feeling poor. This book is excellent for how to make broth and stock as well as how to use it so you can incorporate nutritious broth into your meals and it also helps with those nights when you haven't the time to cook a full meal. I can make soup on Sunday and store it in a mason jar in the refrigerator until the crazy busy weeknight when it can quickly and easily be warmed up for a quick meal.

Although I have not finished this book, I have used some of the recipes and made some broths. The flavors are superb. I probably will not use some of the meats covered here, but the instructions for what I did use were easy to follow and helpful. The Thanksgiving turkey provided another level to our leftovers this year. Time and money are well spent here for those willing to step up and make the effort to explore new things in cooking.

Jenny never lets me down! A lot of my questions were answered in this book about the difference between broths and stocks, the different types of chickens, the length of time for broths/stocks, and troubleshooting.I've tried two of the soup recipes and both I've already repeated. Her recipes are simple and packed with flavor.Get this book if you like soups and making your own broth! You won't regret it.

I have been part of the "Nourished Kitchen" blog/Email by Jennifer McGruther for a very long time. Nourished Kitchen is all about great & nutritious food - that is remarkably easy to prepare. This "Broth & Stock" cookbook is a real gem if you would like to learn about "Broth & Stock"..., from Soup to Nuts. This cookbook takes a 5 Star rating in the wholesome food category. It is further loaded with many fabulous looking recipes where the Broth & Stock forms the base. What sets this cookbook apart from other Soup Cookbooks (I think), is this cookbook uses the Stock & Broth that you previously made to give the Soups etc a new and distinctive flavor and all in the spirit of economy. The first recipe I will make is the Black Bean Soup on page 94 using Beef Bones. It also contains a very insightful section on Fish Stock... which I knew nothing about until this lovely cookbook.

The first section of Broth and Stock discusses the difference between broth, stock, and bone broth. It gives tips on choosing bones and where to find the bones for stocks and bone broths. In addition, it talks about the vegetables you should (or shouldn’t) use, herbs + spices, and the equipment needed for making broths and stocks, as well as methods to store it.The chapters include:The Broth Maker's KitchenMaster Broths and StocksPoultryMeatFishVegetablesAt the end of Broth and Stock, it has a section on where to shop–to find meat/bones for your broth, wild-caught fish and shellfish, wholesome fats, and prepared stocks/broths/bone broths, as well as a page of convenient conversion charts for volume, temperature, length, and weight. Each recipe includes a short introduction, the serving size, the ingredient list, and the instructions. The recipes don’t call for a bunch of different difficult-to-obtain ingredients and the broths are very simple to make. Each chapter includes lots of recipes that you can incorporate those broths into!

Review

“Wonderful. . . . Rich in insights and fresh perspectives. . . . Brands is something of a rare breed. . . . This volume shows the precision and attention to detail that one would expect from a scholar and, at the same time, reads like a novel. . . . It may well be the best general biography of Franklin Roosevelt we will see for many years to come.” —Christian Science Monitor “Excellent. . . . If you want to understand how a great president should act, Traitor to His Class is must reading.” —The New York Observer “[Roosevelt] was an extraordinarily complicated man and the author copes skilfully with his complexity. . . . Mr. Brands is masterly.” —The Economist “A graceful account of this complex, controversial, political genius who, everyone agrees, changed the course of history. Well-researched and exquisitely detailed.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Fresh, approachable, even-handed.” —Boston Globe “H. W. Brands has accomplished a remarkable feat in this terrific work. As if he were creating characters in a novel, he has brought to vivid life the central figures in his story—FDR, Eleanor, Sara Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and the inner circle in the White House—while at the same time providing a fresh understanding of the rich historical context for their thoughts and actions at every step along the way.” —Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of Team of Rivals

I was given this audiobook as a gift and found it to be a good, though perhaps overly brief overview of the life of one of our most controversial and celebrated Presidents. I suspect that my version (10 1/2 hours) is an abridged version, though I do not see that printed on the CD container. The book is perhaps more detailed. My great grandfather, an entrepreneur from the early 20th century despised Roosevelt more than the devil. The New Deal, support of organized labor, the income tax, socialism, all went against everything he believed in. He was convinced that World War II saved Roosevelt from defeat in the 1940 election and a lasting and deserved reputation as an abject failure as President. Nevertheless, World War II did in fact lift the country out of the Great Depression, and lifted Roosevelt into the pantheon of our most celebrated Presidents. This book is a fair and balanced treatemnt of Roosevelt's life. It is not a hagiography and gives the failures as well as the successes of Roosevelt's life and Presidency.

This 888 page book is a scholarly and thorough book about the life of FDR. It gives the background of his family, a detailed look at his upbringing and family life though school as a privileged member of the upper class of America. It gives a close look at his social life and love life of his twenties, his marriage to Eleanor and various intimacies throughout his life. It details the control of Sara, his mother over his life financially, and the beginnings of FDR’s ambitions and goals. The author shows how his exuberance and personality slowly but surely emerged.,His political involvement began to rise at a time when America had changed from an agrarian to a manufacturing country with property in the hands of a few, and communication was with telegraph, telephone, and radio. Immigrants from all over the world bringing their various religious beliefs and hope for a better life, also brought more obvious class differences, often unequal. When FDR was inaugurated in 1933 one quarter of the country was unemployed and hunger and poverty where everywhere, effecting loss of homes and property and leaving a sense of despair. He immediately began to change the economy, taking bold steps and choosing good men to help, creating the New Deal. As the country makes a turn-around, he is faced with rising world problems; and war in Europe slowly but surely effects the country, driving the isolationists to a minority and bringing the US into a world power of its own.Throughout the book the reader sees him developing great leadership, making bold decisions and communicating to the American people through radio—his Fireside Chats. The author describes and quotes conversations with many leaders; especially interesting are those of the Stalin, FDR and Churchill as they discuss strategy and post war plans for disarmament, boundaries, the United Nations and other necessary reorganizational issues. The readers follow his life as he contracts polio in his first term and fights back, keeping his presidency from a wheel chair most of the time throughout his third term, unprecedented, and into the beginning fourth and last to his death in 1945.For the inquiring reader, included in lengthy and thorough appendix are footnotes and references.

As someone who has read a great many books about FDR, I must say this is the very best I've ever read. My husband and I both are "history nuts," and I've been reading bits of this to him. I bought the hardback, and found the print too small for my aging eyes, so then I had it loaded onto my Kindle - which I would highly recommend to anyone who can't read small print comfortably. The author addresses all aspects of Roosevelt's life with an unbiased honesty that is refreshing. Yes, I would recommend this to anyone who loves history in general, or Roosevelt in particular.

I’m glad I read this, my third “big ol book” by H.W. Brands (“American Colossus” and “TR”). I have had the same feeling after each book. Satisfaction of finishing a well written, important book about crucial and often heroic events. Profound insight into this country, politics and business. But where was the heart? Maybe it’s the tough subject matter – business and industry, and two charismatic presidents who never “left the stage” and so there are fewer opportunities for deep sentiment. But I’m guessing it’s just more Brand’s style, and if I really wanted sappy, those bio’s have probably already been written . . . My only other minor complaints are that the end seems kind of rushed, and there was very little written about the WPA program of the 30’s – the one that put 2 million people to work for a while. I like FDR's quote mentioned in the end "great power involves great responsibility." That's a great theme. I'm ashamed to say I thought Spiderman's uncle came up with that. Finally, I’m getting tired of good people dying at the end of their biography. They need to stop that.

A traitor to his class is an apt description of a paralyzed man who became President of the US. FDR brought the government to the people with social security, job training, jobs, educational opportunities, and had a wife that demonstrated compassion for poor and working class. He may have just another politician to some, but for the many, FDR was sent by God to serve America. No wonder FDR's photo was on every fireplace mantel This book shows in detail what a great President he was and why my father's generation of workers so admired him. He was a hero in peace and war. A truly engrossing book about this rare national leader.

Though I have read many biographies of FDR, I thoroughly enjoyed Brands rebelling of his life and presidency. I especially was drawn to FDR's struggles with polio as I have Cerebral Palsy and could relate to his grim determination to not let his disability stop him from his ambitions which led to his leadership in winning WWII. I also learned much more about his loveless marriage with Eleanor and how they lived two very separate and different lives. Greatly paced and well written. I hated for the book to end.
