Very good book for begginers

Unlike most non-legal text on copyright, this one is long on facts and historic context while leaving the fist pounding and pontification to others. I checked this book out of the library after seeing it on the "new arrivals" shelf. Having read it, wishing I could hi-light and annotate its pages with notes, I am now committed to buying it. The author is truly immersed in his subject historically, and the topical nuances of the present legal debates are given their place in history. The evolution of copyright is far more complex in England, European and America than it would appear from the bloggy diatribes dancing across the web today. In European, the question of the honor of the author and his/her ability to defend it was a major factor in determining the laws -- something that has never been an issue in America with its crass love of business for business sake. Likewise the crown-based publishers guild is a player in Europe. This book should be read by far more than professionals in IP, it should be read by everyone interested in civilization post-Renaissance. From Dickens to Disney, the last three centuries in particular could not have unfolded as they have without the struggles documented in the book. The latter parts of the book covers the struggle of computer software and digital rights as well. The internet-age seems to foster shallow, self-righteous, cherry-picked glossings from history, this book, on the other hand, is for those who would like a little more cake with their sprinkles and frosting.

About the Author

Jinny Blom is a leading garden designer who began her London based landscape design practice in 2000. Jinny works on a wide range of projects and has designed hundreds of gardens all over the world. Her innovative and uniquely thoughtful work has been much lauded and featured in the press internationally. She has designed four award-winning gardens for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and was awarded the coveted gold medal in 2007; along with silver-gilts in 2002 (for her ‘Healing Garden’ developed in collaboration with The Prince of Wales); in 2006 (for Laurent-Perrier); and in 2013 (for her creation commissioned by Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale).  The great-granddaughter of an Impressionist painter, Jinny had a Liberal Arts education in the UK. She trained and practised as a transpersonal psychologist and psychotherapist, working for many years in mental health. In 1996 she chose to devote herself to her lifelong interest in natural landscapes and gardens.  She has been a columnist for The Times, contributed regularly to radio and television worldwide, and in 2002 won BBC Radio Broadcaster of the Year for her Radio 4 Woman’s Hour features. Regardless of the damaged condition that my book came in, if you are looking for a book that gives any instruction or guidance on planting, this is probably not going to be the book for the average gardener. Its a nice book over all, but the photography is just better than mediocre if you’ve ever sat and really explored photography books (Curry, Salgado,etc). And yes, it’s about gardening, I view the book to be more about having something on your coffee table to simply enjoy. Its not a book that will translate well for the average flower/veggie gardener or urban back yard landscape. What’s covered in here is big French countryside fields and large paddock spaces, back yards of big manir houses and English Estates. Inspiring, yes, and lovely too, but the synopsis on the book doesn’t really clarify what you’re buying.

I was so anxious to receive this book. I got it today and I am very disappointed. The photography is not great. The gardens are obviously beautiful, but the colored photographs are just plain deficient.....it may be the cameras used but I think it's the printing that failed. Whatever happened, it is a terrible disappointment for such a wonderfully written book to have such bland photos.

I love this book and think the photographs are beautiful. The text surrounding each photos is more about Jinny Blom's philosophy of gardening rather than showing plans for each garden or an instruction manual - but I personally like that aspect. It feels like her autobiography and the gardens that show her story.

Exquisite coffee table show off book compiled by an amazing gardener I follow and admire.

As a graphic designer just getting into gardening, this book was perfect for me. I learned so much about the principles of landscape design and planting that I now feel empowered to begin designing something gorgeous in my own tiny yard. Blom opens up her design process in a clear and compelling way.

Lovely pictures, and a novel approach to garden design, but she operates on a scale way beyond the scope of the average gardener. I didn't find a lot of information I could adapt to use in my own garden.

The maps are beautiful, as are the many illustrations. But they are so tiny! The book is smaller than a sheet of letter-size paper. There are a couple maps that fill the page, but most are half- or quarter-page in size, or even smaller. If the book were twice the size I'd give it another star, as the maps really are handsome. However, some events are treated a bit superficially. The Hundred Years War is represented only by two small maps.

I am very pleased with the purchase of this book. I read a lot of historical fiction and am fascinated with the medieval world and love maps. I wish all historical fiction books contained maps but they don't so I got this book for reference. Turns out it is a pretty good read itself. This book is great for the overall picture of all that was going on at that time from British Isles to the Crusades.

When it arrived I thought it was a little small for an atlas. Now I am glad it fits in my backpackwhen I go to class or the library. Amazing amount of information in this book. The maps fill out my understanding of historical events. Helps a lot !Arrived quickly in perfect condition !

I have been reading through the Story of Civilization by Will Durant and though these volumes do have maps, they are not always easy to read and are somewhat limited in scope.I can say that my understanding of history and geography has been greatly helped and enriched by these atlas' AND the scholarship present in the summations of geography, people, culture and chronologically specific movements in medieval times. An excellent resource for the price.Note: These atlas' are much more rewarding when read along side a history book like Will Durant, Toynbee, Herodotus etc. as opposed to all on their own.

Very brief, concise, and efficient collection of raw information. I gave it 1 star because wikipedia outperforms this book.

I like this book for what it is, generally low cal recipes & ideas. However, the book cover and description markets it like it has a focus on 'meal plans'. The meal plan is basically just plugging the various recipes into a 30 day calendar. In the first four days there are 2 different muffin recipes for breakfast. What do I do w/ the other 11 (22 really) muffins that had to be made? There is also no thought given to common ingredients used within a couple days or really anything people might consider when shopping & planning out meals other than simply assigning recipes to meals/days. This to me is not really a meal 'plan' particularly if you have to make/bake things that make 12 servings and no one else in your home might eat it except you (I realize some things could be frozen or I could just eat the muffins for bfast all week long, but that is the point, it isn't really a well thought out 'plan').So for light recipes that are pretty straightforward to make and sound pretty good, it is a good book. For effective and realistic meal planning, I think it misses the mark.

This book is largely an add for specialty ingredients and other things that are not normal to kitchens. Not a very useful purchase.

Although this book is intended for those who want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and lose weight, the recipes are really for anybody. "Cooking That Counts" guides the reader to a healthier lifestyle by encouraging the cook to prepare real food and eat realistic portions.In the text, there's a section on a list of staples that should be in everyone's pantry and another section on the 1200 calorie 30-day meal plan that provide options to increase calorie intake if desired.I made two recipes so far and will be making a third.I made the "Grapefruit, Avocado, and Prosciutto Breakfast Salad" (page 60) for one which was quick to make. It took me 30 minutes which is 20 minutes over the time specified. The first picture is of the finished dish. Please ignore the pink stuff on the plate; I had trouble sectioning the grapefruit and wound up shredding it to pieces. Those are supposed to be grapefruit sections. That's my fault, not theirs. Their picture in the book is so much better. The dish was flavorful and had an Asian flair with the addition of the sesame oil. I actually didn't like the dressing because the sesame oil is too strong and because I usually eat salad dry. Nevertheless, this was a good meal.I also made the "five-bean chili" (page 233) - see second picture attached. Note that there is no picture in the book of the completed recipe. This dish took a couple of hours for me to make if I include prep time. All the bean and tomato ingredients are canned. It even calls for pre-chopped onions but I chopped my own. I did add an additional cup of vegetable broth than called for in the recipe because after adding the kale, it did not look as if there was enough liquid. The resulting dish was flavorful with a little bit of heat. It tasted both healthy and delicious.WHAT I LIKE- I like that there is something for everyone in this book.- The recipes vary in size as some are for one and others are for eight people or servings.- The recipes really do not require a tremendous amount of time. Although not everything is from scratch, I consider the items that are in cans, like beans, good substitutes when one doesn't want to cook for hours or soak beans overnight. I do think it's a bit ridiculous, however, when the recipe calls for pre-chopped onion.- Some recipes are dairy free, gluten free, low carb, and vegetarian and noted as such. Also, all calorie, serving size, protein, cholesterol, etc. is noted at the end of each recipe.- Most recipes have beautiful pictures of the end result. However, note that some pictures include the recipe with additional sides. For example, pages 166 and 170 show meals that include additional calorie sides on the plate besides the recipe being made.MY MAJOR DISLIKE is that there are too many bar recipes for dessert (nut bars, energy bars, etc.) I hate most bars and really don't want that as a dessert. There are some other 150-calorie snack ideas on page 245 but I also wouldn't consider this dessert. There's definitely no indulgences in the dessert section.Overall, this is a great complement to a well-stocked cooking library that is geared for the health and calorie conscious.UPDATE Dec 25, 2016 - I made the "3-ingredient pancakes" (page 48) and it was delicious. It was more like dessert to me than breakfast (see third picture). They should have called it banana pancakes since that is the main ingredient. The picture in the book and my picture include additional toppings that are not part of the 1200 calorie plan. I added blueberries, walnuts, and a little bit of maple syrup. The book's picture includes the same except they apparently use a yogurt mixture instead of syrup. Also, I did oil the non-stick griddle which is not specified in the recipe. The pancakes would have stuck otherwise and even were sticking a bit with the oil. All this adds to the calories. For those on the 1,200 calorie diet, all you would be able to eat is the pancakes without the toppings and no use of oil on the griddle.

Let me begin by saying I order a lot of cookbooks, and I must admit by far this is one of the best cookbooks I've purchased in a while. Hats off to Cooking Light. I want to begin a 1,200 calorie diet and this cookbook makes it easy to do just that, the pictures are beautiful, the recipes are simple to make AND delicious (the key word here). Not a whole lot of reading in the beginning (which makes me happy), just recipes for breakfast (300 cal), lunch (350 cal), dinner (400 cal) AND dessert (150 cal). No need to run around looking for ingredients either - everything you need you can find at the local grocery store. This cookbook will not disappoint!

My sister in law kept making all this great food, and almost every time I asked where she got the recipe, it was from cooking light. So when I decided to cut calories and be a more portion conscious, I was thrilled to find this cookbook. I went through it this morning, and was starving by the time I was done. Everything looks so good! And a good majority of the ingredients are things I would keep on hand anyway. My favorite part about many of the breakfast meals is that even though the “calorie count” at the top of the page says 300 (or whatever), the entree they’ve made is almost always meant to be supplemented by 20 to 50 calories to reach that 300. So besides the breakfast quiche (as an example), you also get to have fruit or coffee with cream to actually hit that 300 calorie mark. If you want a totally guided meal plan, there is a 30 day breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack meal plan at the front of the book. Everything in each meal section has similar enough calorie counts that you can easily swap whatever you want. There’s also a list of staple foods you should have on hand (so that you have no excuses when it comes to whether you can cook a delicious meal from scratch). Each recipe also includes suggestions on how to supplement your entree for increased calories (if you should be eating 1300, 1400, or 1500 calories a day instead of 1200). There are plenty of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I can’t wait to get cooking.

I’ve had mixed results with Cooking Light cookbooks in the past, so I had middling expectations for this one. I took a deep breath, picked a bunch of dinner recipes, and dove in...and have been pleasantly surprised. Only one fail so far (the quiche leaked), but the other 8 have been tasty and even my teenagers eat them. Some of the “odd” ingredients really do make a difference—I never saw the point of panko until I tried the cod recipe, and now I’m a convert. Takes some planning to lay in and use up the vegetables called for (I wish somebody’d do heathy menus that take into account the fact you’ll have half a cabbage left over on Monday), but worth it.

Eggers writes with a stream-of-thought style remniscent of talking on the phone with someone you haven't seen for years. The difference, however, is that Eggers' story is interesting. More than interesting, it's captivating. The plot is challenging for the reader, as Eggers basically tells a complete story in the first few chapters, only to add sub-storylines intertwined with the theme of the first part of the book in the latter chapters. Instead of being distracting, though, Eggers manages to tie the different plot-lines together to present a unified memoir. While readers may be weary of what seems to be a common theme--dealing with loss--Eggers' unique situation, and more impacting, Eggers' unique perspective, creates a book unlike any I've encountered, with several scenes staying with me days after reading the book.

I was really uncertain what to expect with this book. There seemed to be a lot of strong reactions, both positive and negative. After finishing the book I understand why so many people seem to despise the book, and why others (like myself) love it.Before even reaching the first page of the novel there is an acknowledgment page, well pages. The acknowledgment section is multiple pages of small print ravings. Eggers explains that you are more than welcome to skip this section. I recommend that you do not. It is long, but it is also humorous and will set the tone for the novel yet to come.A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius is about as pompously and as self-centered as the title suggests. Eggers is a twenty-something year old who not only has to find his own way in life, he is doing so while coming to terms with death and parenting his younger brother. It can be seen as a coming of age novel where the narrator has to figure out how to live with death. Or, maybe it is a novel about death where the living are brought along as side characters. Either way, the book truly is genius.It is also eccentric. If you are looking for a more traditional narrative structure or a more mature and likable main character, then you will probably passionately hate this novel. If you are looking for something that pushes the envelope, that looks at novel writing as an art form and isn't afraid to show the world in all its gory truth then you will probably love this book as much as I do.

I found the relationship between Eggers and Toph charming--pseudo father/son, but a lot more like two kids growing up together. Eggers' off the wall sense of humor was great. I loved the presents from random people to Toph on Christmas, especially Jesus. I loved Toph riding a broken bicycle to school like a scooter, because that's the kind of kid idea that goes unchecked when you're being raised by a kid.That said, the book was hard to follow at times. If I wasn't paying attention I'd suddenly become aware that the story had drifted from present day to some other memory. The paragraphs stretched on, making it feel like a million anxious thoughts stuffed into one moment. Maybe that was the point. I did get used to the pacing, but the end of the book was the ultimate test of being able to stay with the story-- a bunch of run on ideas all shoved together. I've got to say, I have no idea what the end of the book was supposed to mean.

Dave Eggers has written a personal account of his life with utmost satire and tongue-in-cheek humor. I greatly enjoyed this book.This is a wonderful memoir:genuine, cleverly written, hilarious at times while shockingly tragic at others.It's a memoir with true character and a story I will not easily forget.The ending left a little something to be desired, but this is a memoir, not a work of fiction, so it is what it is.The people who are saying this is boring clearly picked the wrong book, I think many of them didn't realize that this was a true story and not a fictional tale.

Interesting how the mind works when put to the test.I found it fascinating but i had to read on all the time because I couldn't put it down.I'm sure this will be an interesting picture for people like me who didn't know about this terrible crime.

A great book. The only better one was The Forgotten Highlander by Alastair Urquhart. Bus this one describes life in Changi amazingly and all the escapes they tried etc All in all a "horrible" but amazing book.

Very slow. Very amateurish in the structure of the writing. Lots of repetition. Apart from these remarks, a savage memory of the reduction of humans in wartime. The Japanese soldiers and Korean guards allowed themselves to reduce to the lowest of all animals. We must never allow ourselves to go to war.

Every Australian should read this book to have some idea what these men have gone through, having visited Changi a number of times and observed the conditions, it is very sobering to understand what it was like in Outram Road, Changi was a holiday camp in comparison.

A very well written, engaging account of horrific & disgraceful wartime inhumanity contrasted with outstanding courage & stoicism. Essential reading.

I was amazed and appalled. This book gave me a terrible insight into the atrocities the POWs suffered at the hands of the Japanese. My heart went out to these men and their courage. A terrific book.
