The book was all about her and her stuggles. I bought the book for the science not for her bibliography. Extremely disappointed. The description is misleading.

This is a wonderful autobiographical book that takes you on a journey as she discovers the way the brain works. It can be a bit technical for the non nerd types, but if you can get past the scientific terminology to understand the underlying story that the brain can and does link memories and emotions using chemical signals that tell other parts of the brain and the body how to respond when that memory is triggered. By understanding this it can potentially be possible to reprogram the brain to disconnect negative emotions and feelings by turning off the cell from sending out those molecules anymore... at least that is how i will be looking at the work she did.

This book is amazing on a number of levels. It makes you think about the absurd politics that interfere with serving the public good. We have brilliant scientists playing junior high school games involving their egos, machismo and greed. Candace Pert was a hero who was far underrated in her accomplishments and service to humankind. And this book provides the missing link between body and mind. It was a great reference for my book Stressing Out Over Happiness published in 2016. If you want to truly understand the industry of drugs, games and deception from an insider's perspective at the highest level, read Molecules of Emotion.

I loved the book. Candice Pert explains science in a very easy way. I loved the connection between emotions and the immune system. It is also interesting to learn how politics affect research, something that I had suspected but it confirmed it. The communication between cells is amazing and magical. A must read for anyone. I came to know about Candace B. Pert through the mind-boggling film 'What the Bleep Do We Know!?' I found her presence markedly impressive and right away ordered her book. Molecules of Emotion is not only an extraordinary scientific study, but it also comes with much autobiographic content. Candace Pert has the courage to reveal many details from her life as a female scientist.Since the 1970s, the late Candace Pert has persisted in her vision of finding molecular evidence for the functionality of our emotions, and our sexuality, and more generally for mindbody medicine, within the boundaries of modern science. The book, if all that additional information was taken out, would be a research paper, too thin to fill a book. And it would probably miss its goal entirely. It’s this holistic and empathic approach, and needless to add that it’s an artistic approach as well, that makes this book so unique. And it shows that this scientist is actually a great human. Actually Pert, together with the brilliant animations in the Bleep movie, made transparent how human sexuality works, and that it is not a mechanical abstract function, that it is not, an instinct or ‘drive’ as Sigmund Freud called it, but a direct outflow from our emotional predilections.To give an example, how she explains this rather complex matter in a very readable, comprehensive way, let me put this quote:—If receptors are the first components of the molecules of emotion, then ligands are the second. The word ligand comes from the Latin ligare, ‘that which binds’, sharing its origin with the word religion. Ligand is the term used for any natural or manmade substance that binds selectively to its own specific receptor on the surface of a cell. The ligand bumps onto the receptor and slips off, bumps back on, slips back off again. The ligand bumping on is what we call the binding, and in the process, the ligand transfers a message via its molecular properties to the receptor. Though a key fitting into a lock is the standard image, a more dynamic description of this process might be two voices—ligand and receptor— striking the same note and producing a vibration that rings a doorbell to open the doorway to the cell./24Candace Pert’s project was since its humble beginnings in the 1970s very daring, as until now mainstream psychology treats emotions as ‘floating parameters’ that are hard to grasp by our reigning mechanistic science paradigm.But in her own words, her vision even went beyond. She did not just want to succeed in her personal research project, but desired to help bring about this huge paradigm shift to many scientists who are currently working on it. And she wanted this paradigm shift to expand also into medical science, so that the psychosomatic unity of body and mind are definitely recognized in medicine.It is known from the Bleep movie how brilliantly Pert explained her research, how she can convey complex matters in a simple comprehensive way. And here is how she explains emotions under the particular angle of her research:—When I use the term emotion, I am speaking in the broadest of terms, to include not only the familiar human experiences of anger, fear, and sadness, as well as joy, contentment, and courage, but also basic sensations such as pleasure and pain, as well as the ‘drive states’ studied by the experimental psychologists, such as hunger and thirst. In addition to measurable and observable emotions and states, I also refer to an / assortment of other intangible, subjective experiences that are probably unique to humans, such as spiritual inspiration, awe, bliss, and other states of consciousness that we all have experienced but that have been, up until now, physiologically explained./131-132To summarize, this highly readable book from an amazing scientist may scramble you up a bit, but this is a good thing to happen. The book is not a dry research report, but in the contrary reads like an adventure novel—the novel of a daring woman who has achieved much in her life. She has won the hearts of many people and through touching their hearts she has been able to put new seeds in their minds.

I just got done reading Molecules of Emotion and I loved it.Several of the reviews on this page complained that it was more of a memoir than a text. And they are right, it is - but it is not something that merits complaint. Rather, i think Candace Pert does a wonderful job of showing her personal journey, and the path along the way.i would have rated it with five stars, but unfortunately, the book has a lot of typos. i find it hard to believe that as classic a book as this one would have so many grammar and spelling mistakes. Nearly all of these would and should have been caught by a good editor. I found them rather distracting, making it somewhat harder to read. It was an unfortunate wart on the what would otherwise be a solid five star review.For some books, that would have been it. The book would have going onto the shelf, mostly unread. However, this book was good enough that I was able to look beyond the editing mistakes. And in the couple of days it took me to read it cover to over, i was fascinated by the world Dr.Pert builds.i love the picture she portrays of science - specifically the National Institutes of Health. It shows the atmosphere in a national-lab setting and portray it and the publish-or-perish scientific world in a less than flattering picture of the peer review system. Against this backdrop we have many 'NeuroPeptide' or life sciences discoveries. where is all this leading, I don't have the foresight to predict. But that's the beauty of science, and Dr. Pert does a wonderful job of picturing all aspects of her journey.

My favorite book of 2015. Candace did the groundwork in scientific research of the effect of neurotransmitters and endorphins beginning in the mid 70's and this is her personal and professional story. The facts are undeniable yet our ability to utilize her valuable information still remain untapped in many respects. Pharmaceuticals are one aspect, the actual understanding of our biochemical and psycho-neurological makeup a whole other concept. Great book for anyone studying natural cures, holistic health, energy work, psychology; the applications are endless.

Raban weaves together several parallel life passages while sailing from Seattle to Alaska: his own solo voyage, long-past explorers of the Pacific Northwest, his father's death, and the barely-noticed unraveling of his marriage. Some dangers lurk forever deep underwater; others appear spontaneously floating on the surface. Life, like sailing, is complicated, unknowable, sometimes ominous. There's a lot of history bound up in the sailing metaphor: Raban's own as well as Captain Vancouver's and his family's. Some is objectively third-person; much is deeply personal. Not every reader will want to get on board with such an introspective observer, but it's a very well-written account of one man's journey.

Jonathan Raban is, for my money, among the best of our contemporary travel writers, standing shoulder to shoulder with Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson, and Passage to Juneau only reinforces that opinion. I first read this book in 1999, when it was published, because I was looking forward to a sailing trip through the Inside Passage from Seattle to Southeastern Alaska. Then I read it again just recently because I am again looking forward to this trip.Like most of Raban's books, Passage to Juneau, is written in two layers. The first is an account of his preparations and execution of a solo sailing trip from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska. The second level is an entertaining and well-researched historical account of the travels and travails of Capt. George Vancouver aboard HMS Discovery during his four-year exploration of the northwest coast of North America.But it isn't really a story about a routine sailing adventure similar to that undertaken by dozens of boats every sailing season, is it. It is a poignant story of a successful writer who in late middle age looses first his father (to cancer) and then his wife (to neglect and absence of common focus) and is left alone facing old age in disconsolate apprehension and confusion. The reader is given an early clue to the direction the book is about to take when Raban, early on in his voyage, meets a married couple who seem to cling to each other like the two sides of a Velcro patch and makes the mildly derisive comment, "some people are more married that others," leaving us with the feeling that he isn't very married at all. This is reinforced throughout the book by his obsessive preparations for a planned visit by his young daughter, where he is looking forward to showing her the bears, with only passing mention that his wife will be coming along also.Raban is an excellent writer who doesn't hesitate to bare his soul to the reader and does it with a refreshing lack of maudlinly and only a trace of sentimentality. He records his varying responses to his surrounding with an honest and only slightly judgmental way that lets the reader understands what is going on without feeling the need to interfere or change things. This interested-but-detached view is particularly apparent in his interactions with the members of the First Nations tribes he encounters, and in his slightly cynical take on the ceremonies he is invited to attend. It is like he is letting the reader share his view of the world through one of the portholes in his boat.Passage to Juneau is a recommended read for anyone interested in maritime history, for present-day sailors traveling on sailboats, and to anyone wanting a poignant yet free-from-moralizing story about the personal passage of a late-middle-aged man facing an uncertain future.

This is THE book to read if you plan to spend time on the waters around Seattle, Vancouver, the San Juans and the Inside Passage. The author shares his sailing experiences and, if you pay attention and you are a sailor, you will not have to experience a tragedy involving tides, winds, obstructions, sunken logs, large shipping, and more. The book brings to life the explorations of George Vancouver and his crew along with other early explorers and traders who plied these shores. Several areas of interest are set forth in parallel and in the form of flashbacks. For example, as the author sails the various channels and sounds along the Inside Passage and Puget Sound, he reflects upon what George Vancouver might have seen when he passed there over 200 years before. At the same time, he discusses what early Indians saw and how they related to the sea and how modern day Indians are faring. He delves into Indian art and how the Indians might have drawn artistic inspiration from wave borne reflections. Raban shares his encounters with some of the very interesting characters who inhabit the coastal waters and harbors. He even goes into the changes in the economy in the regions through which he passes. And, on top of all this, he brings you into his personal world where he sails a more stormy sea, the sea of the death of his father, his retracing his life in England and - to top it all off - the rough tides of marital issues. First, I read this book on loan from the public library and then I had to add it to my personal library. Raban introduces some authors I had not read and he enlarged my reading experience for which I thank him. He even caused me to visit Munro's bookstore in Victoria, BC. This book augmented my own voyage up the Inside Passage. I also gave it as a gift to a friend in Seattle who - like Raban - is an avid yachtsman. You will benefit by this book if you take it with you when you visit the region. A masterpiece.

I only wish I had this resource earlier in my life and that I'd consulted it more frequently than I have.

​de Waal's book has been called a "milestone in the centennial of Peirce's death" (Jaime Nubola)​, a short, readable introduction to an American scientist and thinker, the originator of philosophical pragmatism and semiotics, who has been calle​d ​​​​"the most original and versatile of American philosophers" (Paul Weiss)​, and yet is hardly known​ in the USA (although he's known much better in Europe and South America). ​This short book ​is accessible ​to the general reader, the student of Peirce's philosophy, while at the same time "extremely instructive for the expert" (Nubiola). ​There is simply no better introduction to the thought of this great American intellect than de Waal's book.

I have only got as far as Chapter 3, but so far this is an exceptionally clear and well-researched introduction to the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce - accessible to the general reader, but without dumbing down Peirce's sometimes challenging reasoning.

This is very good, very clear introduction to Peirce, which -- as those who have succumbed to his mesmeric charm will know -- is a feat. What most people know about Peirce is his role as the founder of American pragmatism and something about his semiotics (semeiotics); this book starts with these and then explores the wilder reaches of his thought. The stumbling blocks (apart from the amusing triviality of how to pronounce his name) range from his propensity to create new obscure names for everything to the amazing reconstruction of the standard norms of scientific, logical, and philosophical categorization (inevitably triadic). De Waal brings us through all of this with great care. The last chapter, on Peirce's cosmology, is astonishing: it reads like a mixture of contemporary astrophysics with Spinoza/Buddhism, but with a special Peircean flavour (matter is consolidated mind, the laws of the universe are created as it goes along, etc.). This is definitely the book to start with now.

I decided not to go fancy, and buy a GPS navigation system. However I wanted a reasonably compact map book that I could carry in my truck. I drive mostly in Pierce County. I gave this map book a five because it illustrates all the local roads, and points of interest, at a fine level of detail. I use this all the time to look for shortcuts or to route around traffic jams and construction. Even if I had GPS navigation, I would still keep this book as a backup.

The PromQL and Labeling chapters have saved me days, probably weeks of time piecing together information from the Internet.Happy this exists. Very highly recommended!

I've used Prometheus a bunch and have met Mr Brazil once or twice at tech conferences. This book is surprisingly approachable and offers a gradual, easy-to-read ramp up into one of the most interesting distributed systems projects to land since the advent of Docker & Kubernetes. The writing is smart, the examples work, and the book fits together as well as the open source project's underlying components. If you want to quickly get up to speed on prom you would be hard pressed to find a better resource.

I run a Prometheus cluster for my work and have found Brian Brazil’s advice invaluable from his blog and supporting Prometheus itself on Github and in mailing lists. Excellent book. Read this book and go from zero to hero. Every page is packed with lots of details, and best practices. That said, you need to exercise Prometheus in you own environment to appreciate all of the subtleties discussed in the book. My only "criticism" is that the book is not a fast read. Every example makes you stop and think, but that is why the book is so valuable. A must read for anyone who want to monitor dynamic cloud resources.

Very well-written and organized. Coming into the book I had familiarity only with more classic monitoring systems such as Nagios. This book clearly exposes the philosophy and everything possible with Prometheus. I walk away from the book feeling well-educated and excited to put the knowledge to use!

I like this book more than the Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment by LaCharity because the rationales are easier to read and Davis gives rationales for the wrong answers too. It also gives you critical thinking strategies to help you figure out how to break down an NCLEX question. Our instructor advised us to get this book to help us study for our Collaborative nursing class. This book helps guide thinking when answering NCLEX-type questions. Our Collaborative exams have a lot of prioritization and delegation type questions. I keep a notebook handy when doing these questions to keep track of drugs, diagnoses, and procedures I am either unfamiliar with or need a refresher on. I haven't used the CD yet, but I plan to continue using this book and CD (along with a Kaplan book and the LaCharity book I mentioned) to study for the NCLEX. I graduate in December and plan on taking it the first chance I get. Our nursing school now uses ATI to determine what areas we should focus on, so whenever I do take the NCLEX it will be hard to know which study materials helped the most. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it does not give as good of an overview of what NCLEX will be like as Kaplan does. The Kaplan study book also comes with a DVD that tells you the rules of NCLEX and goes into great depth about breaking down questions and answers. Since I haven't taken NCLEX, I'm not sure whether the questions in this study guide are difficult enough to prep nursing students for NCLEX. Maybe I'll come back in January after I test to review all of the study materials I bought.

This has great NCLEX questions for school, but not a good resource for those prepping for the real exam.... In all actuality, prioritization, delegation, and management issues are learned over time. This book has good rationales along with some good questions for the student nurse. I recommend the entire Davis's Success series for school purposes only.
