this book is easy to read, has larger-than-normal print, and is less than 200 pages...kinda simple, really, with the usual, mundane examples of lighting an LED, capturing button presses, etc. - but there are some good subjects in the second half of the bookthe Raspberry Pi Zero v1.3 (with the camera port) is not mentioned or covered, nor is the compute module or development board covered in any detailalthough shared Internet is mentioned, there is no mention of using the Zero with a single USB cord to enable booting, Internet connection or development (RNDIS via USB OTG) - a unique capabilityI2C is also given short shrift with "Luckily, we don't need to understand the protocol in order to use it."the target audience seems to be someone unfamiliar with GNU/Linux distributions, such as Raspbian, and includes a discussion of crontab and various startup scripts, but doesn't really delve into Raspbianas an introductory text, this 'book' is actually more of a pamphlet...however, i'm giving it three stars due to a more involved discussion of using the Pi's camera port - the real fun doesn't begin until page 129, and then more technical subjects ensue...i'm taking off a star for the absurd MSRP and another star for its lack of depth; a glaring misstep is the authors' misuse of the word 'Linux' - Linux is the kernel - a GNU/Linux system is a distribution or operating system comprised of a Linux kernel and component software packages (shells, the X Window System, development tools, etc.)this 'book' is more of a giveaway marketing accessory, the type of document included when you purchase a single-board computer (other vendors selling Raspberry Pis include similar 60- to 100-page documents either in hardcopy form or in portable document format)

This book has a section talking about the Leads on the Raspberry Pi Board and how you can leverage control over them using Python

Actually teaches you how to use a Raspberry Pi

I bought this for my grandson so he could learn how to use the Raspberry Pi 3 that I bought him as well. He loved it. Had it read by Christmas night.

Bought this to go along with a Pi I gave as a gift. It is NOT basic at all, lacks sufficient information on setting up and using the Pi. If you want a starter book for someone or yourself, look elsewhere.

This book is intended as a guide for those who want to learn about the r-pi and includes information on the newest version, the Raspberry Pi 3.The book gives a brief overview of the r-pi’s history, essential accessories and how to prepare the Pi for operation. One of the most useful chapters presents the basic Linux commands you'll need to get started, which is one of the biggest hurdles for many new users. There are also good introductions to the Python programming language, R-Pi’s hardware and how to do basic input and output operations. There are discussions of other operating system options intended for more specialized uses such as home theater. The explanations in the book are clear and concise and don't use a great deal of impenetrable jargon, which usually only serves to confuse. I got this book as a guide for my daughter to learn how to use the R-Pi and I believe she’ll do very well with it.

Much like their Make: Arduino book, this one gives you step-by-step instructions to "get out of the gate" fast, and also a plethora of ideas for what to do with your Pi if you bought it without a project in mind, just to tinker. There's enough that even a novice linux and python user can make use of the platform and do some simple coding to projects done, such as: simple button/switch/LED manipulation (such as if you were making a gaming cabinet), media center (both roku-like or stereo system), digital sensors, photo frame, or simply just a cheap system on which to learn programming. There's just enough tutorial on breadboarding and the onboard pins to make you dangerous. It's like the adult version of those Snap Circuits electronic discovery kits.

This is a decent how-to guide for Raspberry Pi (RPi) uses. It takes you through various possibliities step-by-step and is relatively easy to follow. The first part of the book is very basic, and if you have some experience with computers, this section may not be too useful (or it could be a good review for you). The instructions were clear, and does not bog you down with too much technical jargon. What this book is good for:-new users to RPi-basic/intro Python language-basic Linux commandsWhat this book lacks are:-applications for RPi zero v1.3-lack of hardware detailI have two favorite uses. First is a Pi-based low-power NAS (Network Associated Storage) using two portable USB 1TB drives (I used the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB Portable External Hard Drive and I estimated about $5 annual power consumption. The other use I liked was as a media player for my tv. With this, I stream 1080p videos stored on my main NAS connected via in my home local area network (LAN). I tried to stream online content (Netflix, Hulu) but the best I can do without stuttering is 720p. I have yet to tweak it to play online 1080p content without suffering. It's a very good guide to have in one place. I recommend it for new RPi users. It's an ok guide for advanced users.
