Love the 70s time period and Singapore setting. Heroine seems practical and sympathetic. Looking forward to more investigations by Miss Moorthy.
I hate to oversell this, but you see the wellsprings of a genius at work here in this early fiction…Miss Moorthy. What a name, and what a strait-laced character we are introduced to. Driven to distraction by her almost beatnik, music-crazed parents, she has to move out of their home to pursue her mundane dream of becoming a schoolteacher. Which lands her, what else, in the hands of a murderer. This rapid introduction, this upside-down approach to character set in the 1970s, when hippies became straight again (almost) and the Western aspect of the world began to turn from We to Me, and Us to Them, lays the rhythmic background for everything that follows on the surface.Of course, Moorthy isn’t so straight-laced as she seems at first, thinking that “being wrong was better than being bored,†an early indication that she will be leading herself—and us—on a steep chase through the hills of Singapore into a world of trouble. As one friend after another becomes a victim of “The Strangler,†a line appears drawn in her direction, and, while she determines to discover his identity, those hands loom out of the shadow directed at her pretty neck.Ms. Yu brings her expertise as a writer and her eye for human behavior to this effort. You can trust that it pays off in ways one normally does not expect from early trials in this genre. Her sense of history, culture (and all that implies) place, politics and more is well-absorbed in all she does. Well done.
