The Hanson-Roberts Tarot is a lighthearted redrawing of the Rider-Waite Tarot by Mary Hanson-Roberts.The penciled artwork in this deck is slightly cartoonish, and the scenes are rendered much closer than the Rider-Waite tarot. The result is a tarot deck that even as being smaller in size, it is still easy to read, to study and to appreciate. Some of the symbolism had been traded off for the close up shots, which may be a turn off for some tarot collectors, but still makes it easier for beginners to use. Each card in this deck is labeled in five languages within a small white scrolls at the bottom. The English label is most prominent than the others, most of the time presented in the middle of the scroll. The Major Arcanas are numbered, starting at 0 for The Fool and roman numerals for the remainder Major Arcanas. This deck is recommended for those tarot collectors who like pocket-sized tarot decks. This is my favorite Tarot deck. I've been using this version of the Tarot since in either the mid '80s or the early '90s. I love the beauty of the cards and the way they help both the reader and the client feel comfortable, even when the news is not always what you wish it could be. I find them especially good when doing readings for people who are afraid, who may be unfamiliar with Tarot, and for teaching children, though you don't need to be in one of those categories to appreciate this deck or to benefit from its special healing energy. The images are intuitively easy to understand. You don't have to struggle to memorize all the cards with this deck, the meaning just comes to you if you look at the story being portrayed. The deck is smaller than a typical Tarot deck, about the size of regular playing cards, but a little bit narrower, and therefore is easier to shuffle with my small hands. I recently bought a new deck, since my much loved older deck has mysteriously vanished, and it arrived today. The new cards have a smooth plastic feel, the colors are bright and fun, they are still a bit stiff, but they shuffled without much difficulty. The small size fits easily in a special small cloth bag, with a beautiful silky scarf wrapped around them, that I can slip into a pocket of my purse and have available if someone needs guidance outside of an office setting. I recommend them to anyone who is interested in Tarot or who wishes to give a gift to someone who is interested in Tarot. They come with a small instruction booklet in the box, for those who would like some suggestions for doing a successful reading. There is also a larger book for this deck that can be bought and which I also recommend.

The Hanson-Roberts Tarot is probably my favorite deck of all time, and the reason? Because it's engaging. The artwork has a more modern feel, and there's a wealth of detail in each drawing. The characters are very fairy tale-esque, but far from being obnoxious. The cards are sunny, friendly, and smiling when the card calls for it. They are also heart-wrenching at times -- the 10 of Swords and 5 of Pentacles, which are always difficult cards to uncover in a reading, have a sense of sorrow and desolation that is equal to the sense of buoyancy found in other cards. This is a charming deck, but not entirely happy-go-lucky, so people who've heard the rumor that this deck is too cheerful should forego those rumors entirely. This Rider-Waite clone retains much of the original detail from the traditional RW deck down to things like the animals carved into the thrones of the court cards and the color of the horse that certain characters are riding in the Minor Arcana. As anyone who's familiar with the intuitive approach to reading tarot can attest, these details are important to readers, and it's good to see so many of them remain in this deck. The artist has taken liberties with a one or two cards in ways that change the way they might be intuitively interpreted -- the 3 of Pentacles, for example, is normally a card depicting a builder and a few architects collaborating with each other on the design of a cathedral being built, and in the HR deck, we only see the builder working alone, which takes away from the "collaboration by way of cooperation" feeling that the original RW deck gives that card. But these deviations are rare, and what's depicted in the card doesn't take away from the traditional meaning, if that's how you still wish to interpret it. You might just have to tell yourself you're looking at a more "zoomed in" perspective. For those who say the colors are pastel or washed out, I have to disagree. The colors in this deck are very vivid; however, the illustrations are colored with what appears to be colored pencil or prismacolor, and that pencil-like texture comes through on some of the cards (and of course, this isn't a bad thing...it's lovely to see that the entire card has been hand-drawn and hand-colored by the artist). The color representation on the cardboard box for this deck is a little misleading, because it looks like someone decided to amp up the saturation on those images. Compared to the deck, does that make the box seem intense and the deck comparatively washed out? Maybe. But to say this deck is not vividly colored is exaggerating the issue, in my opinion. The cards are smaller in dimension than most tarot decks, something more akin to playing card dimensons (though with 78 cards to a deck, it is obviously a thicker stack of cards than your average playing deck). The cards are a little stiff to start, but they break in quickly. There's a soft glossy sheen on the cards that isn't distracting, doesn't make the cards stick together, and doesn't add to individual card thickness. The back design of the card is a little busy for my tastes, but the loveliness of the images themselves make up for that very nuanced complaint.I really love this deck, and I can't recommend it enough. Modern take an classical images that give them depth and an emotional quality that's more accessible, especially for new students of the tarot. A fantastic (and my favorite) alternative to traditional Rider-Waite decks.

The Hanson Roberts Deck is great for advanced or beginners on their Tarot Journey. The deck is very true to RWS style yet has its own unique style. The Artist style is whimsical and feels almost nostalgic and magical. The illustrations are more close up and facial expressions are easier to interpret with this deck so it feels more personal. The card stock is decent wish it were more glossy. The cards are smaller than the regular tarot size. That makes it easier for anyone with smaller hands to shuffle. The cards come in a flimsy box and theres only a Lws book that doesn't really go in deph with the cards meanings. However I will still give the deck 5stars.

I was looking for a deck that wasn't the typical 5x7 inch deck size. I'm glad I checked out the Hanson-Roberts card dimensions because this deck is smaller in size! The images are not scary and it follows the Rider Waite system closely. This deck has fast become a favorite of mine!
