This book was fascinating. I had never heard about Asimov before coming across this book, but will definitely seek out more by him.

With this book I completed reading a series of 16 books in the order recommended as the story unravels - listed below. (Robot, Empire, and Foundation series).Foundation and Earth offers a nice closure tying events well with the Robot series however, he only goes 500 years into the Sheldon Plan leaving the reader to wonder how the Plan worked in the end.Although Asimov left an opening for the next book which never happened, I was not so much bothered by the cliffhanger as much by the 500 remaining years of the Sheldon Plan. One can argue those are one and the same but I did not experience it that way.Overall Foundation and Earth was a crescendo after the other five foundation books and the one I liked the most.The whole series: I thoroughly enjoyed the Robot series, but I had to push through some of the Empire books (Pebble in the Sky). Most Foundation books were entertaining and I wanted to go back to reading any chance i got.I am being careful not to give anything away, or at least nothing that you could not find in common places.I gave it fours stars instead of five because on at least one occasion I predicted what will happen. I don't always appreciate such predictability and Asimov had such an amazing imagination that he could have avoid it.This is the recommended reading order:1. I Robot (or The Complete Robot) [ROBOTS]2. The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]3. The Naked Sun [ROBOTS]4. Mirror Image (short story) [ROBOTS]5. The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]6. Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]7. Asimov must have intended this to finish off his Foundation series - which it did, during his lifetime, although he did write a final Foundation “prequel” book before his death. This is why he circles back to robots (his best stories, in my opinion) in the end.But the language is ponderous and tedious, the plot line thin and predictable, and the characters thoroughly unlikeable. I quickly got sick of “dear chap” and “old fellow,” Trevize’s constant “why did I choose this path” repetitions each chapter (the reader surely had not forgotten, but maybe Asimov the writer had), his ongoing antipathy and sniping remarks to Bliss and Fallom. Fallom, actually, is the only mildly believable and clearly sympathetic character - and is ridiculed and put down by the main character over and over again.It’s not a boring book, and like all Asimov the science is sound. But despite having the same three characters for two straight books he never got them developed. “Classic SF” - thankfully, it’s gone now.

I am an avid reader of Isaac Asimov and have re-read the three main novels time and again over the last 30 years. In those books he occasionally devolves the story into near-meaningless banter between two characters. Alas, this novel is mostly made of such banter and the plot was predictable from reading the first few chapters. Not his best work.

Science fiction literature has been part of my reading since my early teens. My earliest readings contained, by today's standards, relatively tame sexual interludes and of course assured my continued reading. Sexuality in this example of Asimov's writing is really quite tame, but would have kept the 14 year old me entranced. The adult me is impressed with the mature sexual attitudes taken in this story. Beyond all that Asimov provokes mature conjecture about humanity and profound philosophical conjectures about broad questions, not only of human governance, but also human interactions across different worlds and cultures. This book like many of his benefits from Dr. Asimov's excellent education and his being present at the cutting edges of physics and science during some of its most profound advances. He refers to things like the uncertainty principle in an off hand way that does require a bit from the reader. In summary, Dr. Asimov gives us very entertaining stories interspersed with thought provoking philosophy and sophisticated scientific references. It's a very satisfying book to read.

Foundation and Earth picks up right where Foundation's Edge left of as Trevize, Perolat and Bliss continue their search for Earth. The entire story-line includes the famous wit found in all Asimov's novels but seems to pack in even more intrigue than normal as it slowly becomes clear that something even greater than the Seldon plan may be at play. The story is very fast paced making it difficult to put this book down and it stretches the imagination more than any of the previous books. Asimov uses this final book to tie in both the Robot series and the Foundation series as well as clear up many other questions left open in his prior novels. The result is a very satisfying conclusion the the Foundation series.***For those new to the series, here are the specific seven books tied directly into the Foundation story line and their original date of publication. I read these in the order they were published and was very happy to have chosen that order. The Big Green Egg is a great cooking system. Instead, we opted for an outdoor kitchen with a conventional grill, an Evo Grill and a Tandoori Oven (Indian Clay lined oven similar in design to the Big Green Egg).This is book covers everything from smoking, searing to grilling. The recipes are easy to understand and the ingredients are things that can be easily found in common grocery stores. Photographic quality is excellent.Overall, it's a great book for cooking with these alternative systems

My bookcases are filled with cookbooks. Never have I read one from cover to cover, that is, until now. Eric not only includes recipes that are easy to follow and look delicious, the first and last sections of the book provide helpful hints from firing up to extinguishing. He has numerous time and money saving ideas spread throughout.This weekend I cooked the Competition Boston Pork Butt, Aunt Bette's Dutch Oven Baked Beans, Zucchini Boats and Cindi's Slaw [not in the egg], all in my Big Green Egg. All I heard from my guests was "YUM". I was worried about the pork butt being too large [20-24 servings], but my 6 guests went back for 2 and 3 helpings each! I have about 1/3 of the roast left and was going to freeze it, but am noticing slices disappearing :-)The only question I have about the pork was how to achieve the crispy bits that I see in Eric's picture. I wonder if by mistake I inverted the roast [fat side down] and maybe that prevented it from crisping up. Please understand, it was delicious as is. My husband just likes the crispins.Do not hesitate to purchase this book. You will not be disappointed! I think this weekend I will try the scallops!Thanks Eric. I hope there are more cookbooks to come!

This book was highly recommended by a Big Green Egg group on Facebook, and they were not wrong. We had bought the official BGE book, which wasn't as useful as I would have liked. But this one, with just a few pages of reading, my husband declared had taught him more than any other source had for our egg.We have used the recipes for chicken wings, ribs, and brisket, and with the exception of the latter, the meat has turned out amazingly. With the brisket, we think it's been user error thus far. Definitely a must buy if you have any type of kamado type grill.

Love, Love, Love this book! So much more than a cookbook! The author provides very detailed instructions for every aspect of green egg smoking and cooking. Now all the other egg cookbooks I’ve bought seem like a waste. This is the best grilling, smoking, cooking egg book I’ve seen. It makes the whole process easier and the recipes I’ve tried are truly delicious.

Great recipes for the Green Egg, Kamado Joe or Kamado Vision. The use of coffee grinds was new to me and to my surprise it works very well and gives a particular taste. I must confess I was apprehensive when I used it the first time, but no worries once you are done. I do grind my coffee very fine. I don't know if that is critical but it works for me.The other recipes are great to. The text is easy to follow and the pictures makes your mouth water. This method of grilling opens a whole new world . I will never go back to conventional barbecues. There is no comparison.

I smoke a lot of meat and have been smoking for at least five years on a variety of gear (and on and off for 20 years). I do not own a Green Egg, but I consider this book to be the best single source smoking book I have seen. I have recommended this book to numerous people who are using any kind of ceramic grill. I have an inexpensive kamado called Akorn (Char Griller product).If you can control temperature on whatever you are using to smoke, this book has great recipes, cooking time and techniques. If you have a Green Egg and you are new to it, you need this book.

Great book for familiarizing yourself with the egg, I have made it my mission to complete every recipe and I have already pre-ordered Eric's next book. Very detailed and simple instruction for operating your Kamado Grill. As far as the recipes - I found that there are actually quite a few that I would take down the "Flavor" and I simply use salt and pepper in most of my cooking - so I didn't follow a lot of the seasoning recommendations... But, I love the instructions! I prefer simple seasoning versus the extensive selection of marinades in this book. That being said, I have learned so much from the author and this cookbook has now been repurchased more than once as a gift to friends.

Oscar G. Brockett will always have an international reputation as a theatre historian. A Distinguished Scholar honoree of the American Society of Theatre Research, he received career achievement awards from both the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. In addition, he was a recipient of the Robert Lewis Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Research. After receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University, he taught at several major American universities and at the University of Bristol in England. He also served as president of the American Theatre Association, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas, editor of THEATRE JOURNAL, and editorial board member of the ASIAN THEATRE JOURNAL. He held the prestigious University of Texas Z.T. Scott Family Chair in Drama and was director of the Center for Dramatic and Performance Studies for several years. Dr. Brockett authored many articles in leading journals and several books, including HISTORY OF THE THEATRE. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a distinguished teaching professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the dean of the Fellows of the American Theatre.

I tried - I really did. I *genuinely* wanted to like this book - it even passed my personal "75 Page Test" - if it holds me for the first 75 pages I stick with it. The reviews were largely glowing. As a Modern Pagan Witch I was roped in by descriptions of the author weaving in contemporary concepts of the Wheel of the Year, the Goddess and references to tie-ins with Dion Fortune's The Magical Battle for Britain. The sample rhymed spells calling on the Goddess included in promotional material sounded fabulous. But after an initially intriguing and filled-with-possibilities start, this was ultimately plodding, painful to read and the characters were flat and one-dimensional. I found many of the main characters difficult to like and some even unlikable - Ursule the Second made me want to jump off a Cornish sea-cliff! The "mother-daughter" relationship sales-pitch by many reviewers left me scratching my head - if this is what the "love between mothers and daughters" is all about, I'm thankful I missed all the dysfunction in real life! I can't say the same after having read A Secret History of Witches. Trust your intuition if you're on the fence about whether to read this book or not - there's more genuine magic in that than in Grandmere Ursule's crystal.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is very pagan friendly, and incorporates and alternative history and the spirit of the Magickal Battle of Britain, though it is not descriptive of the true events of it. (See: The Magical Battle of Britain. I love the stories like this and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel where magic is used for good in times of war.This story is not at all complicated, and quite easy to read as a simple pleasure. It has strong female characters who are hereditary witches. This is the story of a lineage of mothers and daughters through time, and their use of magic in attaining their life's ambitions. The stories center around family, love, and children, and occasionally fortune. The individual women's tales should resonate with all women. The book has chapters, but it is perhaps easier to put down as each new generations' tale emerges.The book does draw on ritual aspects of modern neopaganism and Wicca, as well as, in some sense, Wicca's own very real historical fiction. Woven through the story are topics such as the wheel of the year, with very simple explanations of those days' rituals, and basic circle casting and scrying. At times the women in the stories are raised Christian, and the story is very Christian friendly overall, though there are some fundamentalist witch hunters who are much feared, for good reason.It is not lewd, though very brief sexual situations are mentioned in a romantic way, and it is never explicit. The language is very mild and in general, the values are love and faithfulness to it, observance of the wheel of the year, and family and loyalty. There's also a strong thread of love and respect for animals and their well being, and love of the earth and planting/gardening.If you enjoy this story, especially the tales of Gypsies practicing the craft in secret in the early- mid 21st century, you might also like Diary of a Witch. As I was reading "A Secret History of Witches" I found myself often remembering how I enjoyed that book, too.

It took a long time for me to get into this book. The story begins in the early 1800's with a family of witches and follows their line up to the 1940's. Although I understand what the author was trying to do, the majority of the book felt like one long list of names. There were many characters, but they were all underdeveloped. And, it was frustrating to get interested in one witch's story, only to have it end abruptly, and then skip ahead fifteen years. I did not really enjoy this book until I got to the last character, Veronica. Here, the book stopped skipping ahead and actually told a story. Also, for a book titled, "A Secret History of Witches", I would have liked to have learned more about the actual history of their craft. Where did the characters get their power? Why did they have magic, but not other people? Why did some daughters inherit the gift, but not others? Why did they know so little about their own craft, even in the beginning? I did really enjoy Veronica's story and the work she did with her power. I would have liked to have seen that with the previous generations. Overall, it was a good book, but not my favorite.

This novel was a struggle from beginning to end. I felt I had to finish it because I purchased it, it was that unenjoyable. Absolutely no depth. I honestly don’t even see the point in the story. A line of 5 witches? Ok. But that’s it!!!! Unimaginative, boring, I cannot believe it was nearly 500 pages. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this book was beyond disappointing.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. Each character is well developed and interesting. I hated that this book ended so soon . I read a lot of books. This one made me slow down and read for the pleasure of reading.

I love witch stories. This one begins in Brittany, 1821. It traces five generations of powerful mothers and daughters whose magic is both dangerous and extraordinary. The Orchierses fight to keep the old ways alive with uncanny spells and rites. When World War II breaks out, magic is needed more than ever. This is a very unique story, exciting and captivating. It will definitely entertain you. It may also entice you to discover your own witching gifts!

Once you read past the second generation, you have finished the book. Each generation is the same story line. I sat reading thinking, ""Oh let me guess, she gets pregnant out of wedlock and it is a girl and oh wow she is a witch." That pretty much sums it up. After the 2nd generation it is a boring, repeat story line caught up in in a spinning, gerbil's wheel.

About the Author

John L. Volakis is the Roy and Lois Chope Chair Professor of Engineering and also serves as Director of the Electroscience Laboratory. A native of Chios, Greece, Dr. Volakis obtained his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1982 and was a professor at The University of Michigan (1984-2002) prior to returning to The Ohio State University. He has co-authored over 240 journal articles and 350 conference papers, and is co-author of the books: Approximate Boundary Conditions in Electromagnetics (IEE Press) Finite Element Method for Electromagnetics (IEEE Press-Wiley), and Frequency Domain Hybrid Finite Element Methods in Electromagnetics (Morgan & Claypool). Dr. Volakis is a Fellow of IEEE and a former President of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He graduated/mentored over 50 Ph.D. students/post-docs and is listed by ISI among the top 250 most referenced authors in Engineering/Computer Science.

I should qualify my review by saying that I am not an electrical engineer, nor skilled in advanced math.I bought the book because it dealt with some topics that I have not found addressed anywhere else,and wanted to get some answers. It did answer my questions, but with some difficulty because thetopics are rightfully complex.In one or two instances I found that the treatment of a topic was not as thorough as I would like. Forexample, when discussing helical antennas, the lion's share goes to axial mode antennas, andnormal mode seems to be a relative after thought. Of course, helical mode is more common so thisdoes make a certain sense for most people.Even in those cases where my math skills are not as high as assumed, I did get valuable informationfrom the text through the clear writing and excellent diagrams.I would expect this book is, or should be, on the book shelf of anyone serious about antenna design.

A very good reference work, covering virtually all types of antennas. This volume is a refreshed version of what earned a "classic" reputation. The author/editor of the original, Dr Henry Jasik (now deceased) was a personal friend of mine, and at Henry's request, I authored the chapters on circularly polarized radar antennas, published in the first three editions. Naturally, I read the similar chapter in this edition, too, to which I did not contribute.This edition retains the wonderful encyclopedic breadth of the earlier editions, and retains the quality which was the hallmark of the earlier editions. If you are professionally active in antenna design/development, this work clearly merits a place on your bookshelf! Go for it!

Good

The breadth of topics contained in the Antenna Engineering Handbook is impressive. By virtue of the shear size of the volume, each topic is covered in detail by an expert in the specific discipline. Mr. Volakis does a good job of developing a formalism in the first chapter, complete with the requisite discussion of Maxwell's Equations and their consequences. The first chapter's rigor gives way to much more applied and empirical discussions in chapters 2-59, each with enough granularity to get the interested party off in the right direction. Highly recommended.

Its an excellant reference/text/design book for students,teachers and professional engineers.A welcome addition for every Antenna-Engineer's personal library.

Keen and concise

Even in paperback, this book is lovely on your coffee table, but also informative about the natural architecture movement. Purchased as a gift and was well-received!

How we engage with nature can be defined as breathtaking by virtue of our human capacity for ideas made real by building. This book shows us how to open our spaces, so we can open our minds and our hearts to a more Artful experience with nature and our environment.

I got this book based on the example pictures which you can see on Amazon, and for those it's nice. But many of the really inspiring pictures in the book are available here or other places online. The book covers a wide range of projects, from a practical bridge construction in Tibet to an agricultural education program for kids (which has almost nothing to do with architecture as far as I can tell) to extremely personal works of art. If you read the professional reviews above, you may think the projects in this book share characteristics like decaying over time. The selection is really more a scattershot of whatever Alessandro Rocca happened to like. There are parks and houses included, for example, which are carefully maintained and are not expected to decay at all for the forseeable future.Unfortunately most of the especially beautiful works are marred by the luridly purple prose attached to describe them. It's the typical modern art nonsense where artists plant an arbor of trees but have to artspeak what they've done into, "a device for alteration of the gaze in paths of access and leaving the place. Its evolution is very closely connected to its reception, which necessarily passes through the sensations received." If you can wade through that kind of self-aggrandizing vocabulary list, more power to you. I for one had to tear out the pictures I liked and toss the book so the text wouldn't ruin the experience of the art.

This beautiful volume has a wide-range of outdoor structures constructed, for the most part, from natural materials. As a member of a community that has built straw-bale structures, I found the range of materials and style of structures quite inspiring.I recommend this book for anyone intersted in the relationship between the natural world and man-made structures.

About the Author

WILMA MELVILLE is a retired physical education instructor and the founder of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF). She served as a FEMA-certified canine search specialist deployed in response to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Though formally retired, Wilma is actively involved with the SDF's National Training Center in Santa Paula, California. Not prone to slowing down, she still stays in constant motion, bouncing between duties as a mother, grandmother, dog trainer, pilot, and horse enthusiast.PAUL LOBO is a writer, army veteran, and part-time volunteer for the SDF. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, newborn son, and a duo of rescued pit bulls, all of whom constantly expand the bounds of his affection (and, occasionally, his patience).

As someone who saw these dogs in action at the World Trade Center, I can tell you that this book captures the undaunting spirit and tenacity of both the dogs, and their handlers. This will be a very enjoyable read for any dog lover. Sometimes, rescues, and rejects, just need the right place to shine.

What a beautiful book on rescue animals having their lives turned around when they were in need! Being trained to help humans in dire situations or devastating crises circumstances is amazing and gratifying. It also tells of the sadder side of stories where death is involved but resolution is solved by finding the bodies in huge numbered tragedies!

This was a well written book and a very good read.

Great book. I love true stories about real American heros. Thank you, to the trainers, handlers and of course the dogs.

Hero Dogs was hard to put down. I’m a dog lover and trainer and reading the story of these rescued and rejected dogs that turned into disaster search partners was enlightening, exciting, and heart wrenching. Some of these dogs had such a rough start to their lives. It was wonderful reading how their training evolved along with partnering and learning how to be a search and rescue team.The story is told from Wilma’s perspective and gives us the beginning of her partnership with her own dog, Murphy and the frustration she felt from other SAR handlers and SAR organizations. After working the Oklahoma City bombing, she ultimately vows to train 168 dog and handler teams for each victim. She decides to use rescue dogs for her program. The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, SDF, was then created.I loved the stories of the different dogs and their individual personalities and quirks. The pairing of the dogs with their human partners was unique and very appropriate. Wilma doesn’t sugar coat the trials of training these dogs and handlers. She also doesn’t let us think that every dog was perfect for disaster search. Some didn’t make the cut, but ended up in a working environment that fit their specific skills. A promise she made at the beginning was that none of these dogs would ever see a shelter again even if they couldn’t become a part of the program. Along the way, she meets and becomes friends with many people that she freely acknowledges as being a part of the whole and not just one person’s goal. It took many people and dogs to get the SDF where it is today. The search and rescue community is definitely better for having her work so hard to have her dream become a reality. Disaster victims couldn’t want a better team on their side than the SDF dog and handler teams.It was hard to put this book down. It flowed very easily from page to page. If you know nothing, or very little about search and rescue this book will be interesting. If you have knowledge of SAR, you’ll enjoy reading about the dogs, training and handlers. I enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend it. I received a free e-copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Hero Dogs is the book for animal loves around the world. I do not like reading about Animals dying so when I decided to review this book I knew what I would be reading.I loved reading the amazing stories of animals that help in tragedies from around the United States. How they are just as much hero's as the people who sacrificed their own lives.I learned so much from the talent people who trained almost a majority of recuse animals to find the living as well as the dead.This is a must read book for anyone interested in training animals or service animals. Readers will get amazing insight into the level of training a service dog goes though as well as the dogs and trainers go though to become a Search and Rescue dogs.Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Wilma Melville and Paul Lobo Hero Dogs.
