This book is written more for a teen audience and I am not a teen. However, I came across the title and thought it sounding like a good book. It really addresses being comfortable with who you are and choosing your own identity. Many of the other reviews are basically summaries so I will not retell the story but its an easy read and I definitely recommend it. It does deal with some racial issues. It is set in Australia and the main character is Muslim.

I bought the book for my niece, and she loves it. Shipping and handling was great, would recommend it for girls.

I read this book a while ago and I was interested in reading it again, it is as good as I remembered it. It gives you the perspective from all age groups, about how:- discrimination, stereotypes and being judgemental impacts individual, families, society etc etc

Actual Rating: 3.25Review can also be seen here:[...]I recently bought this book due to my interest in reading contemporary stories featuring Muslim main characters, particularly women and teenagers. I am not Muslim myself, and don't see myself converting to the Islam faith, but I love reading about characters with different faiths and lifestyles. To be honest, I don't see many differences from faith to faith, so why not diversify my reading with characters who are faiths that are not my own(FYI, for now Im Agnostic, but I feel as though faith may guide me towards Buddhism). Now, Ten Things I Hate About Me? Hmmm....This book was just alright. It centered around an Australian born 15 year old named Jamilah Towfeek. Her parents were originally from Lebanon, and are Muslim. Apparently Australia hasn't quite got the memo when it comes to diversity, so anything outside of being Anglo-Saxon Australian was considered un-Australian. Since Jamie lived her school life as "Jamie" and dyed her hair blonde, and wore blue colored contacts, she gave no reason for her fellow Anglo-Saxon classmates to judge her in the same ways they judged the students who were "ethnics."A lot of this book made me uncomfortable. It's well written, and depicts a teenager as accurate as I remember being one, but the racism is quite ugly, and it's sad that the youth is brought up with such hate, even now. Explaining what I liked and wasn't sure about would be much easier. What I liked:I felt as though the pacing is good, short books tend to be better at pacing than longer ones. It didn't reveal information too soon or too late, so that was a thumbs up. I suppose it's consistent. Jamilah doesn't really steer far from being the kind of girl she is. The backstory is well thought out, and not too much is revealed too soon and the story doesn't take too much time dwelling on backstory. There's plenty of conflict. Jamilah is someone who deals with racism indirectly, as her classmates know nothing about her heritage. It's kind of sad, but she would rather sit and take abuse, than be true to herself. She also is in a constant battle with her father. He does not approve of her doing certain things. To me he's the standout character. I loved Hakim. He was a grieving widower having to pick up the where his wife left off in raising his children. Jamie often thought he was being strict, but what good parent isn't a little overprotective? Too much of Western culture is centered on sex, drugs, and alcohol, I dont think it's asking too much to want to shield your children from negativity. Let's face it, kids are doing it, but I don't think it's wrong of a parent for wanting the best for their children.I do think the book is unique, or at least to me. I don't read a lot of books centered on Muslim teenage girls. Especially from Australia.I don't find there to be many issues toward the language, but I'm American, so anything I read Im going to assume to be difference in dialect or lack of knowledge or cultural awareness. Jamilah's in a band at her madrasa class(Arabic class) and her bandmates are overly exaggerated hip hop fans. Their dialogue may just be a result of thinking that's how Americans talk. Her POV is clear, as it's first person and never steers from that. There's an acceptable amount of space between beats and dialogue, and the editing is an industry standard. The book title is intriguing. Makes me wonder what the ten things are. And the cover gives me an idea that she's going through an identity crisis.Things Im not crazy about:While there is plenty of diversity, and I mean main character type diversity, Jamilah herself is so ashamed of her heritage in the company of Anglo-Saxon descended Aussies. So much of her opinion on herself, and other non Anglo-Saxoned Aussies comes from the opinion of the so called "real" Australians." Let's not put sugar on s***. I hated her crush. He was chauvinistic , racist and too arrogant for his age or own good. But I think I actually hated Jamilah more for taking the abuse. Culture and race is kind of where a person like me draws the line. She's relatable but only when she's proud of herself. I don't suppose her passing for "white" is a new story. To be honest, I've never considered the Lebanese to be anything but white, so Im confused about why it's seen as so negative. I suppose perhaps it's common to be considered white in one country, then to immigrate to another and be considered a different race, but she was so eager to not be a "loser" that taking the backhanded racism came with her passing. It really didn't raise the self esteem of young Muslim girls to me. Mind you this is just my opinion, but I never felt as though Jamilah reached her epiphany on how to see herself. She didn't come to any conclusion on her own, she only came to decisions after many tried to convince her to feel that way. She was also so un-appreciative of her father. Perhaps this is a bias of mine. I have such a great appreciation for immigrant parents. They often sacrifice their own happiness for better opportunities for their children, and Jamilah just didn't see that.I think I kind of liked this book. I didn't love it, but didn't hate it. I would probably read from this author again, but I just didn't find it was a great representation of proud Muslim young women.

You must read this!!! I relate to it to a point of where I can't speak! Even if I sound cliche, I INSIST YOU READ THIS!!!!!!!!!

Although straight forward in themes and morals, this story was presented gracefully with enough humor that the possibly tired plot was quite enjoyable. I loved exploring race and high school politics with the main character, Jamie.Jamie is a sophmore in high school. She dies her hair blknd and wears blue contact lenses to hide her heritage from the school. At home she goes by Jamilah and participates in Lebanese-Muslim culture with her family. She’s not allowed to go out with friends per her dad’s request, which is a source of conflict for her because she wants to have a social life and not be seen through prejudiced eyes. Her biggest refrain is that she does not want to be seen as just another stereotype.Although this book was written rather simply, I enjoyed getting to know he characters. Farrah filled this book with quirky lines like, “Man, I was angrier than a constipated giraffe.” This is definitely a book better suited for a younger audience, but it does speak simply about race, stereotypes, prejudice, and how to navigate being true to yourself. Set in Australia, I got a new perspective on racism/race dynamics in another country, as so much of what j here about is just racial tension in the US or sometimes Latin America. And, or course, who doesn’t love a book with strong family ties and a happy ending? Ten Things I Hate About Me definitely has a 90s family movie kind of vibe, and I loved it!

[...]Favorite CharacterShereen – Since she had more time with their mom and she’s a big sister, her groundedness provides a strong example of how to be proud of all parts of your identity for Jamilah. Plus, I love how she has created an active feminism that respects and fits into the rest of identity while still challenging the parts she finds difficult.Favorite Line“I read headlines describing the crimes as ‘Middle Eastern rape.’ I’ve never heard of Anglo burglary or Caucasian murder. If an Anglo-Australian commits a crime, the only descriptions we get are the colour of his clothes and hair.”The book may not be subtle in any of the “lessons,” but it is honest.Fun Author FactAbdel-Fattah has worked as a lawyer, an interfaith activist, a consultant for media representation of Muslims and Middle-Easterns, and is not working toward her Ph.D. – I am always impressed by all the things writers do in addition to writing! Is this worth a book hangover? This is a more surface-level look at identity, racism, and the need to be/fear of acceptance. Jamie/Jamilah’s story is not very complex and sometimes it’s a little too sweet, but over all it’s an interesting look at the process and difficulties of self-acceptance.Read These NextShine, Coconut Moon by Neesha Meminger for another look at a teenager reconciling different identities or My Basmati Bat Mitzvah by Paula J. Freedman for a fun, middle grade look at what balancing Indian and Jewish identities might be like.

American Gods, by Neil Gaiman

Amazon.com Review

American Gods is Neil Gaiman's best and most ambitious novel yet, a scary, strange, and hallucinogenic road-trip story wrapped around a deep examination of the American spirit. Gaiman tackles everything from the onslaught of the information age to the meaning of death, but he doesn't sacrifice the razor-sharp plotting and narrative style he's been delivering since his Sandman days. Shadow gets out of prison early when his wife is killed in a car crash. At a loss, he takes up with a mysterious character called Wednesday, who is much more than he appears. In fact, Wednesday is an old god, once known as Odin the All-father, who is roaming America rounding up his forgotten fellows in preparation for an epic battle against the upstart deities of the Internet, credit cards, television, and all that is wired. Shadow agrees to help Wednesday, and they whirl through a psycho-spiritual storm that becomes all too real in its manifestations. For instance, Shadow's dead wife Laura keeps showing up, and not just as a ghost--the difficulty of their continuing relationship is by turns grim and darkly funny, just like the rest of the book. Armed only with some coin tricks and a sense of purpose, Shadow travels through, around, and underneath the visible surface of things, digging up all the powerful myths Americans brought with them in their journeys to this land as well as the ones that were already here. Shadow's road story is the heart of the novel, and it's here that Gaiman offers up the details that make this such a cinematic book--the distinctly American foods and diversions, the bizarre roadside attractions, the decrepit gods reduced to shell games and prostitution. "This is a bad land for Gods," says Shadow. More than a tourist in America, but not a native, Neil Gaiman offers an outside-in and inside-out perspective on the soul and spirituality of the country--our obsessions with money and power, our jumbled religious heritage and its societal outcomes, and the millennial decisions we face about what's real and what's not. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly

Titans clash, but with more fuss than fury in this fantasy demi-epic from the author of Neverwhere. The intriguing premise of Gaiman's tale is that the gods of European yore, who came to North America with their immigrant believers, are squaring off for a rumble with new indigenous deities: "gods of credit card and freeway, of Internet and telephone, of radio and hospital and television, gods of plastic and of beeper and of neon." They all walk around in mufti, disguised as ordinary people, which causes no end of trouble for 32-year-old protagonist Shadow Moon, who can't turn around without bumping into a minor divinity. Released from prison the day after his beloved wife dies in a car accident, Shadow takes a job as emissary for Mr. Wednesday, avatar of the Norse god Grimnir, unaware that his boss's recruiting trip across the American heartland will subject him to repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife and brutal roughing up by the goons of Wednesday's adversary, Mr. World. At last Shadow must reevaluate his own deeply held beliefs in order to determine his crucial role in the final showdown. Gaiman tries to keep the magical and the mundane evenly balanced, but he is clearly more interested in the activities of his human protagonists: Shadow's poignant personal moments and the tale's affectionate slices of smalltown life are much better developed than the aimless plot, which bounces Shadow from one episodic encounter to another in a design only the gods seem to know. Mere mortal readers will enjoy the tale's wit, but puzzle over its strained mythopoeia. (One-day laydown, June 19)Forecast: Even when he isn't in top form, Gaiman, creator of the acclaimed Sandman comics series, trumps many storytellers. Momentously titled, and allotted a dramatic one-day laydown with a 12-city author tour, his latest will appeal to fans and attract mainstream review coverage for better or for worse because of the rich possibilities of its premise.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I have enjoyed reading Neil Gaiman for awhile now. I first read his Sandman comics and then I read his novel Neverwhere. Gaiman has a knack for coming up with extremely clever ideas of a mystical nature and carrying them off with energy and atmosphere. I looked forward to much of the same with this novel, American Gods. Though not quite up to the level of his previous stories, there is much to like here. As always with Gaiman, the idea here is very clever; namely, that when the settlers from the Old World settled America, they brought with them their various gods. Since a god's "health" is maintained by the amount of worship received, the Native American gods were overshadowed by a new pantheon. The thrust of this novel is that the Old World Gods--Odin, Loki, leprechauns, etc.--are being replaced by technological/consumer "gods." (The television, for example, comes to life at one point.) But these old gods aren't going to go out without a fight. The story follows the adventures of a man named Shadow, a recently freed ex-con haunted (literally) by his recently deceased, cheating wife, who is hired by Wednesday, a creature Shadow slowly learns is a version of the god Odin. The two of them travel around gathering up the old gods into an army to battle the new gods. Needless to say, there are plenty of twists and turns leading to a surprise ending of sorts. There are problems here, however. One: the characters are interesting but only superficially. It is difficult to ultimately care about what happens to any of them with possibly a couple of exceptions. Two: the "gods" in question here are not any that most people would consider gods. The entire Judeo-Christian influence is pretty much ignored apart from some subtle imagery. I find it difficult to swallow a novel about American gods that ignores these influences. Still, the novel is a quick read and does present some ideas that are interesting to chew over. How dependent on worship is a god's power? What is the nature of sacred objects and sacred places? Is technology and consumerism taking over the role of religion in America? I just wish the characters had been a little more engaging and the story a little more energetic.

This is the 10th anniversary edition that I'm reviewing, which means that there should be 10 years worth of reviews already, and anyone who is a Neil Gaiman fan will have already read it.That said, here goes: it an old idea that you've seen before in a couple of Star Trek episodes and who knows elsewhere: the Greek gods or some other gods (in this case, pretty much all gods, in any pantheon that ever existed) are (or were) real! They derive their power from being worshiped, and only die if they are forgotten. The twist: believers bring their gods with them when they emigrate. We have old world gods in the new world. New gods don't get along with the old ones, and a conflict ensues. We follow one individual, Shadow, who isn't himself a god, but who might be employed by one, on journeys to various odd locations in the U.S. which are focal points of power. Not knowing much lore, he nevertheless has to do his best to fulfill his employer's missions, feeling his way through potential dangers and political intrigue.

Dear, dear how I've loved this book. After a long hiatus from reading novels, I picked this one up on the basis of others' reviews. It was everything that I could have asked for in a fantasy novel: a diverse set of compelling characters, a sense of mystery and doom, emotional connection, a sense of history intertwining with the present. Clearly a modern classic and, though it is set in America, a work that plays with the idea of interweaving history, fantasy, and action in a way that is reminiscent of the the classics of the fantasy genre. A beautiful book and a world and vision that I hope Gaiman continues to explore for years to come.

As the title of this review clearly states, I saw the TV series before I read this book, in fact I did not know this book existed and I was quite certain that it would not be a book I would enjoy reading, after all, the series revealed all the secrets.Well I was wrong this book is full of highways and byways, I touched in the series treatment and in fact has more depth than those eight epidodes could ever dream of and although it never got to the end of the book, in fact it did not even make it to the House on the Rock, the series was an excellent way for me to pick up something that I should have read years ago.The characters all fully drawn, the plot is well paced and the author is true to his premise throughout, which for me anyhow make this a five star book. When archetypes are needed they are used and used with a deliciously ironic effect. This is the sort of book I could put down and come back to, until of course I received the final chapters. Although the ending is foreshadowed more than once, and I will not spoil any else's enjoyment of this book by pointing it out, I was caught up in the narrative that I could not suspend my disbelief for long enough to puzzle it out. Although I look forward to another season of American Gods, knowing what I know now, will certainly allow me to cast a more critical eye on the transformation of this delightful adventure to the small screen, and I expect great things from the screen writers as they weave the rest of this tale into their streaming video offering.

This book is really great! It has a short story about Jesse James, it's not really long, but it's pretty cool to read about different stuff about him. Most of the book is pictures, I love the styles of photographs. I'm a fan of art, I consider this an art book. It's too bad their isn't more pictures of his hot rods and his other machines. I seen it at a store a while back, but I finally got around to buying it. I got lucky and bought one that got signed by the man himself too.Right now he is hated the media and many people for his personal problems, but I don't care what he does in his personal life. I know he worked very hard on his bikes and he is very talented at welding and building stuff with metal. Most people only knows his divorce, but they don't care about what great things he did and how he over came the odds and how he made a good living too. I have a lot of respect for the man by keeping it real all these years, I loved watching the Monster Garage episodes and Motorcycle Mania 2 and 3.

I love the pictures (that's pretty much the only reason I purchased the book, which is why I gave it 5 stars). I actually like it when they pose the babes with the bikes (again, that tipped my review up to 5 stars). I could do with a little less of the "artistic" close-ups.Other people have commented that there is not much autobiographical information; that is true. If you want to know more about Jesse James you would need to buy a different book.

Love the pics, but dont expect much reading...more of a photo shoot, but i love it. just want to make sure you know what you are getting.

the book is ok. only the cover missing.

Don't expect any lessons on how to build a custom Harley Davidson. This book is just pure eye candy. Considering that bike magazines are so expensive this book is worth buying for inspiration. As a 'coffee table book' (whatever that means!), it serves its purpose well, which is why I'm giving it 5 Stars.I'm not really into custom Harleys (As far as H-Ds are concerned I would prefer a Buell X1 Lightning or Sundance Performance Super XR1200) but I appreciate the effort, skill and craftsmanship that goes into each of his bikes. Jesse James is famous because he's the real deal. He can actually do his own metalwork, shaping sheetmetal into a tank or fender, and does his own welding. His style is a bit on the extreme side of things, yet isn't bizzare or cartoonish, which is probably why he's successful.I bought this book because I wanted to know ... "Who is this guy?" ... "Why is he so famous"? I've created a couple of special edition automobiles ... but why am I not even half as famous? :) We could all learn a bit about marketing, advertising and promotion from Jesse James. If you want to read about Jesse James himself, buy the Mike Seate book "Jesse James, the man and his machines".

I was a bit disappointed in this book. I did like the bike photos that were shown... not many. Lots of filler of Jesse and his gang posing with guns. What looks like porn stars on the bikes.... I would rather just see the bikes man. I don't need to see pictures of Jesse playing tough guy holding a shotgun or burning money. Or his freaking dog dish with the WCC logo on it... my god. It makes you wonder what he is trying to make up for. His bikes are cool. They need to show more of them. And the text is pretty much a joke too... F this and F that. Its like a big kiss up to Jesse as a bike god or something and F the rest of you. If you pay full price for this book, you deserve to get beat down by Jesse.

I saw Jesse James had a book coming out so I ordered it. Upon receiving it I read it in about an hour. My reason for ordering this book was to find out more info about the man that is not written in every publication out there. What I found is there is about 15 + pages of written words and the other 130+ pages are photos. Granted these are great photos, but I have seen most of then on the West Coast Choppers and the Chopper Dogs web sites. Most of the text about Jesse James I have read before. However, there are a few cool facts, photo's etc. The best pics are those with Jesse Jr. and Cisco(his dog). Overall, a really cool book. If you're a fan of Monster Garage and Choppers then this book is for you.

I received this book as a gift, which is the only reason it's not in a trash can right now. People are paying $17 for a bunch of recycled photos, only 40 or so of which portray Jesse James, along with a few hundred words of unreadable text? This is the "authorized" biography? Is the man's life so horrible that no one could write about it? Frankly, this book is an insult to Jesse's fans. If you want to read about Jesse, buy "Jesse James: The Man and His Machines," by Mike Seate.

Dapiran takes you on a viscerally realistic walk into the middle of Hong Kong protests in recent years (where he actually walked, sometimes in clouds of pepper spray) and back until resistance movements in the 1960s (which he probably didn't but it feels that way). After 15 years of living and consulting in China, and running a business in Hong Kong, I had an 'aha!' moment every 10 pages or so. This is an easy but very profound read, the kind of book which, after you've closed it, goes right back onto the 'read it later' shelf.

Devra Lehmann’s books is simply the best I ever read about Spinoza’s life (and I have read a bunch of them). For me the most important philosopher in the modern world. Introduced thoughts about how we are bound to G-d. Unfortunately the jewish community (or call it, the Rabbinate), never took actions to terminate his excomungation which is a loss for our community per se. I would love to meet Devra personally just to thank her infinitely for the reading she has provided. In my opinion, the best read so far for 2018.

I love this book. The historical perspective and learning philosophy on a level that was easy to follow, made this a really great book. I know it's geared to young adults, but at 52, I still enjoyed the educational and enjoyment experience. This would be a great book club book!

I have read that Einstein "believed" in Spinoza's God, and reading this biography I can well understand why. The author's writing is clear and engaging and she isn't prejudiced as to what the reader should think. I am not young be any stretch, but I love well written texts intended for young people who desire wisdom.

Excellent book and definitely not just for young adults. Devra Lehmann manages to create a page turner, that teaches so much about history and philosophy at the same time. A must read.

This book is so engaging that any one can pick it up and learn to think like a philosopher. As a teacher, I can see the book as a wonderful way to introduce students to a new way of thinking.

Thank you!

Clear compasition. A good story. Clearly NOT the factual reality of a disrupted diseased mind.

I hiked solo to EBC and Gokyo Ri using this map. There were one or two times that i wished it was more detailed or had distance markers on the route but overal it did great. It lasted the whole trek and held up to the rain and wind. I hiked just after the 2015 earthquakes and so I was one of the few people on the trail. If there are more people on the trail and you have any questions about the route you can ask others. I had to rely solely on this map and it did the job

Decent Map. Good construction. Printed on both sides. One side is detailed map of the Everest EBC trail and surrounding regions including Goyko Lakes, Cho La Pass, Dragnag, etc. Identifies trails clearly and shows locations of medical facilities, Tea Houses (Lodges) and the like. Elevations for destinations and points of interest clearly marked in Meters. Opposite side is map of entire country of Nepal with enlarged Kathmandu. Has some kind of plastic coating so it won't be ruined by water. You can write on it with a Sharpie. Pens not so much. Not for a serious climber that needs detailed elevation data or detailed routs. Probably should get 5-stars based on what it was produced for. But I would have preferred more detail and enlargements of area on the trail.

The number 1 item on my friend's bucket list is to climb to Mt. Everest base camp. When he told me his dream, I decided to help him out by getting him prepared for the exciting journey. I purchased the National Geographic adventure travel map along with the book Trekking in the Everest Region after reading the highly satisfied ratings both books were given. I am wrapping the set up and giving it to him for Christmas, I can't wait to see his face.

I used this on my trip to Everest Base camp. It feels high quality and doesn't get wet easily. If you want any help with trip planning or have questions, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram (@zachoneverest). :)

The map is brilliant for anyone travelling to Everest. It shows you all the the area around including entrance, altitude, treks etc. plus it brings a bit of valuable general information and the it is clear and easy to take in anywhere. Very easy to read when you are tired at 6000 meters above sea level and if your tough enough hopefully above 8000 meters above sea level as well.

Functional Map

Great quality! I brought this map with me when I trekked to base camp and wrote on along the way. I highly recommend!

You can definitely buy cheaper maps in the Khumbu, but they are printed on cheap, easily tearable paper. I used this map over and over. Outside of the actual Everest base camp location (there's a difference between the Trekker's Base camp and the Climber's Base camp) and the contours of the Khumbu glacier (I doubt anyone would have this) - I referred to this map every day of my trip. Buy a couple of cheaper maps for reference - but this is the map to use.

I am very dissapointed with this book, it did not deliver at all. In other words, the book is out dated. Actually, it should be written off market. Why? One reason is that the book did not have any form of configuration screen at all. Basical, if you use this book there is no form of step-by-step guide to tell you if you right or wrong. Secondly, there has been so much upgrade done on the module which the book did not mention. Even though, I was looking for a cheap book at the time of purchase. Personally, I felt like this is one of those bad investments.

I should have paid more attention to the title. It's called "Administering" SAP R/3 and not "Customising". It explains how to use the different SD functions not how to implement them. Unfortunately, it cannot be recommended to users either because it is too technical and does not explain things in a comprehensive manner. There are some books that emphasise the business process and help you decide how to implement this in SAP. This is not one of them. This book is smack in the middle of a no-mans land. It's no good for customising, no good for users and no good for planning business processes.I totally agree with some of the other reviewers. Your better off with the online documentation.Save your bucks. Don't waste them on this book.Incidently, if your looking for a book on SD customising, I can recommend "Implementing SAP Sales and Distribution": 5 stars!

This book offers no help at all in configuring the SD module. It basically just explains all the functionality that is available in the SD module, without explaining how you can configure SAP to use the functionality. If you are buying the book to see what SAP SD can do, fine. But if you want to configure the module, try another book! I recommend the SD book by Glynn Williams from McGraw Hill.I have also read the MM and FI-CO books in the ASAP series, and they are the same! - they cover the functionality and not the configuration. And even though these books cover the functionality, they don't explain how to use it effectively, they just tell you what functionality is available. You may as well spend some time using the SAP online help.I suppose these books were great when SAP was new and not many people understood it, but now the market is more intelligent and aware of what SAP can do the market expects quality information on configuring the SAP system and using it to solve business situations.
