Review

"Because I get several request a day to blurb or review a book, I have to refuse most of them to survive. But I opened this fine book out of curiosity, and found it so well written, and so filled with gems, that I knew I had to pass on the good news! Read Mystics and Misfits by Christiana N. Peterson--even if you think you don't have time." --Richard Rohr, O.F.M., founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation "I cried healing tears as I read this book. Christiana N. Peterson's breathtaking way with words, coupled with her rare perception--her ability to name unseen movement in the air around grief, family, and community, and the mysterious shifts in the soul--left me pared back and longing for the deeper, more honest things of faith. Anyone grappling for words to express the strange intermingling of joy and suffering needs to look no further. Peterson brings in the misfits (the saints and the readers both), looks us in the eyes, and makes room for us to embrace the only thing we can in the midst of this nuanced, beautiful, and painful life in the flesh. She makes room for us to embrace the mystical misfit within us all." --Amber Haines, author of Wild in the Hollow"In Christiana N. Peterson's beautifully told memoir, the reader comes to understand that our relationships with saints living and dead can take many forms but that at their heart, they are about the compassion that draws us into community. Peterson deftly sketches the optimism that drew her to an intentional Mennonite community as well as the difficulties of community and family life while carrying on conversations with her chosen groupings of Catholic saints. It's an unexpected juxtaposition that works beautifully." --Kaya Oakes, author of Radical Reinvention"Rich and resonant, this book speaks to all who dare to hope that the God of Saint Francis still speaks to us today." --Amy Peterson, author of Dangerous Territory"In Mystics and Misfits, Christiana N. Peterson guides the reader through both the lives of saints and her own journey in pursuit of God in an intentional community. It is the perfect blend of idealism tinged with mortality, of contemplation marred by depression and the mundane realities of moldy rugs. This is a gorgeous, quirky, and heartfelt book inviting the reader to love the mystics and misfits of our world--both those around us currently and those who came as guides long before." --D. L. Mayfield, author of Assimilate or Go Home"This unflinching narrative of spiritual transformation will first captivate and then challenge readers at the depths of their souls. In the midst of intense personal, family, and community struggles, writer Christiana Peterson heeds the yearning of her heart to seek a more robust faith. To her surprise, she discovers deep wellsprings of wisdom among the Christian mystics, a tradition often ignored among Protestants. Despite their eccentricities, the mystics model a deeply human, resilient faith that offers sustenance and hope as Peterson navigates a perilous journey from youthful idealism through disillusionment to a more authentic life." --Marlene Kropf, professor emerita of spiritual formation and worship at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary

As someone who grew up in the intentional community Peterson writes about, and thus a "misfit" myself, I found reading this book to be an intense and deeply healing, if not mystical, experience. Christiana's ability to beautifully weave together her own poignant experience-with all the joys, sorrows, and challenges-of intentional Christian living at Plow Creek Fellowship with those of saints, mystics and "misfits" powerfully ministered to me. As I read her intimate and insightful reflections, I felt that I was journeying with her as she witnessed the last chapters of our shared family (Plow Creek members) and home (Plow Creek Farm). And, despite knowing how the journey at Plow Creek ended for her and others in this story, I found I could not put this book down! I yearned to hear more, to find out how her journey ended, and how it all affected her in the end. I laughed and cried with her and, ultimately, found healing with her as she reflected her thoughts in the last chapter and affirmed my own experience as a "misfit" in the "normal" world.

Okay, I admit I read all the parts about the Plow Creek Fellowship/Farm experience and her family before I read the whole thing in the order Christiana intended. Acquaintance with many of the 'characters' made this especially interesting to me, a relative newcomer to this part of Illinois.Christiana is an excellent writer; I found myself unaware of her 'craft' as I read. I didn't have to spend any time trying to figure out what she really meant or wishing she had a better copy editor. My one regret is not getting to know her better while she still lived nearby.

Honest and vulnerable, this wonderful book is filled with part autobiography, part spiritual journey as the author remembers her time living in an intentional community. The correspondence sent by Peterson to the mystics she admires are delightful! Throughout the book she holds back nothing of herself as she shares her struggles with faith, ideals, motherhood, and life. I was drawn into her story and read the book within the first twenty-four hours of having it in my hands. A must read for anyone trying to navigate their way through life and live according to the law of love taught by Jesus.

This book is basically a memoir that runs alongside “letters” (really, prayers) to various mystics/saints. It follows the author’s experience in an “intentional community” as she attempts to find herself and push the boundaries of comfort. Honestly, parts of it feel very...’millineal,’ and at times I felt that she was pushing the emotional drama of her narrative voice (trying to emulate Ann voskamp maybe?). But she arrives at a place of maturity at the end that sounds believable and actually different from where she began. I thoroughly enjoyed the parts on the actual mystics (which were a bit sparse and why I actually bought the book). All in all, an interesting read and perhaps a nice introduction to the mystics.

Beautifully written and brutally honest. I especially appreciated that Peterson intertwined the mystics with her own experiences. Very relatable for me to some of the struggles of doing life with others. Had to read it cover to cover, could not put it down:) We can all grow from learning of others experiences. Thank you for sharing your story!

LOVED it!My favorite line - "Life, death, suffering, and blessing are huddled so close together that they often resemble one another."Beautifully written. Raw and unapologetic reality of true holiness.

For those of us who pursue distraction, Peterson’s book is a gentle call to face the difficulty of the real. Her book invites us to a conversation between her and her crew of Mystics and Misfits as she goes through a period of loss, trouble, and failure. Peterson perseveres, and she does, her difficult curriculum leads us with her into a graced communion with the Christ.

If you love beautiful writing, buy this book. If you find yourself drawn to the lives of saints and mystics, buy this book. If you have ever dabbled in the messy world of intentional Christian community, buy this book. Really, you just need to buy the book already.
