Not using yet but things don't change that much year to year.

Having just spent more than 2 weeks in Iceland, I've had a good opportunity to see which guides worked and which ones didn't. To begin with, Cathy Harlow's excellent book is more along the lines of the DK Guidebooks: excellent pictures, printed on heavy glossy paper, and short on up-to-date, detailed info on accommodations and restaurants.In other words, this is a book to read and enjoy BEFORE going to Iceland, but it takes up too much weight for the info it conveys. Let's face it, the 20-kilo weight restriction for international flights, together with the even more severe practical limitations for people who use public transportation where there are no porters or native bearers are strong reasons to travel as light as possible.Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this book and would strongly recommend both the texts and photographs as an excellent introduction to a fascinating travel destination. Used in conjunction with the Rough Guide to Iceland or, even better, the updated Lonely Planet Guide to Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, it is a worthwhile book to read and to keep for reference.

Not having seen any reviews or picture of this book, I was a little worried about what I might find when I ordered it. To my surprise, however, I received an absolutely fantastic description of everything Iceland has to offer a first-time tourist. The book is packed with dozens of amazing, beautiful photographs that compel you to fly over there as quickly as possible.The text not only covers a solid description of all the interesting places to visit, but dives into some of the history as well. Most importantly, the author makes available plenty of contact phone numbers and addresses (physical, e-mail, and web) that will help you better plan your trip.Even if you weren't thinking about ever going to Iceland, you would after reading this book.

Well known for his picture post-card views of Scotland, Colin Baxter has taken his work to a more satisfying level with this book of his Iceland photographs. Accumulated over many years' visits -this book provides an invaluable catalouge of what to see should you be visiting this unique country. Photographers and those with a special interest in landscape will find the map showing the photo locations invaluable. Good design, adequate printing, lots of photos, some very good indeed. Icelandair should be very pleased with its impact on tourism: very low Puffin count too!

It's been 4 hours, since I returned from Iceland, and one of my first things to do was to cancel my pending order of this book. Out in Iceland, I could have a look at what's inside, and quite a few of the pictures were disappointing. From someone with a limited amount of time (say, one week) and budget category equipment, this would be a nice book, but not from a professional photographer. Contrast is low in many of the pictures, and some of them were not taken at the right time of day (or right weather conditions).From this point of view, the book 'Lost in Iceland' was way better.I don't recommend it, if you want really nice shots.

I recommend this fantastic book to anyone intersted in Iceland. Forget the other guide books, none of them compare to this complete guideto Iceland.

This book simply trots out some painfully obvious truisms about proper nutrition and exercise as if it were some earthshaking revelation, and employs them to push some hyper-overpriced snake oil products. Ah, the joys of capitalism: magnify and exploit people's insecurities in order to make a gazillion bucks.I'm amazed that this is actually a book and not some cheesy infomercial on the Home Shopping Network or late-night local TV.I know---my neighbor's wife, who is just barely getting into her mid-40s, bought this whole swindle hook, line and sinker. After spending upwards of two grand on these lousy creams over the past six months, she looks exactly the same---that is to say, somewhere in the neighborhood of 45. Which is exactly how she SHOULD look, for Chrissakes. Luckily her husband is a very well-to-do stockbroker so he hasn't divorced her yet, since two grand for him is pocket change.People, get a grip: aging is totally NATURAL, and totally UNAVOIDABLE, just like death and dying. Anyone desperate enough to fork out megabucks for BS products like this would be much better advised to spend the money on some competent therapist.

Fantastic book bull of great, detailed information. Incredibly useful. I ran across this book on vacation in the hotel's stash of random books. It looked at first glance like it was a book designed to tout the wonders of skin cremes or other topical treatments that probably aren't necessary. I was extremely wrong. As soon as I dug into it I quickly realized it was a wealth of information that was succinctly summarized. The age of the book doesn't matter. The science is still valid and not in any way overturned since then.

So often, when authors churn out book after book, the content turns out to be a big disappointment - the same old ideas just repackaged - over and over, ad nauseum. Such is not the case with the Perricone Promise.If you don't learn a ton of new information from this book - well, you're either a neurobiologist or you haven't really read the book. Dr. Perricone says he learns something new every day about the "powerful interaction between the foods we eat and the rate at which we age," and he passes along this interesting, vital information.Yes, the supplements he recommends are often expensive - but have you checked out the cost of plastic surgery or treatment of disease? In fact, the price tags associated with either one make the cost of supplementation appear to be a real bargain.I enjoyed this book with its fresh information. I will implement his 28-day plan. And, I look forward to and will purchase his next book. He presents health information in a readable and beautifully presented book that outlines his approach to health and beauty.I disagree with the potshots at Perricone's character by other reviewers.The diet he presents in his books is fairly straightforward: Ditch the processed foods, mainly the high-carb, flour, sugar and starchy foods, and build your health through top quality proteins like wild Salmon, lots of colorful vegetables, berries, and other fruits, and some legumes and nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Drink clean water, and tea. There you have it. What's the controversy for??? This is what good nutrition is about. Do you really need a mountain of clinical proof to convince you that eating these high nutrient foods will positively affect your well being???Perricone aims for high qualtiy in the diet and lifestyle he presents. I like his approach, which is very sensible, because he motivates change through positive , visual results. He is a DERMATOLOGIST, so obviously he is going to aim at outward beauty of the skin, as a window to inward health.If you can see the results of your healthly lifestyle outwardly, you will be more motivated to keep it up.If you are told to eat for heart- health or for the health of your liver, well you can't see your internal organs. Perricone takes a holistic aprroach that begins on the inside, dealing with overall health. We all want to look good, and good health results in good skin.Some of the ingredients and foods for his recipies may be harder to find, but this is supposed to be a lifestyle. He provides resources for some of the products, and with the internet there is no reason you can't find something and order it. Sure, it takes a little effort, and a little more money, but if you make some changes to your lifestyle, you can reallocate time and money into getting high qualtiy foods, and products, and you will gain long term benefits.It's all about a trade off. Just ditching that box of process cereal and other packaged processed foods, a case of soft drinks, and ending your trips to the fast food joints would be enough to save you money so you could reallocate your funds to quality foods, and supplements.

great book

Just to establish my own credentials - I'm a game developer with 5 published titles under my belt including Master of Orion 3, Kohan 2, Axis & Allies, and two Zoo Tycoon 2 games.I was asked on very short notice to teach a Game Development class at a local college. So off I went to Borders to find a textbook. After some digging, this is what I picked out. The features that recommended it to me where that it included the source code, and over the course of the book it promised to build a fully functional game.Here's what I found instead:* I would guess from his terminology that the author has never worked at a game company. He just doesn't know the lingo - or he's worked somewhere so remote from my own experience that his lingo is completely different. Also, based on the quality of his code and the quality of the resulting game, he wouldn't survive a second at any game company out there. He wouldn't make it past the phone interview. If you are considering a career in game development, do NOT follow this person's example or you won't even get in the door.* The code is the most horribly written I have ever seen. I would expect better out of anyone who has ever taken any sort of class on object oriented programming - or worked on any sort of project employing more than one person. The best way to describe it is poorly written C code written in C++. The spacing is non-standard. That variable names are horrible. For many of the programs, it's all in the main.cpp file. Global variables everywhere. Hardly any use of classes, and where they are used they are monolithic and poorly designed. Ugh.* The book is frequently innaccurate. It needs an errata list badly - but if there is one, I haven't been able to find it. For example, in chapter 1 he tells you that you only need 1 line of code to enable z-buffering. After talking to colleagues and looking on the web, I was able to get this to work (I'm an AI guy, not a graphics guy) - but he was missing 4 of the 5 lines needed to make it happen.* The book also tends to be incredibly light on details. It tells you the DirectX functions you need to call (mostly) and the specific values to plug in - but not what the functions do, or what the other possible values for their paramaters are, or how the parameters affect the output. The style of the writing is also incredibly informal - it sounds like something written by a 10th grader. Granted, if the quality of the content was solid I wouldn't care about this - but added to the poor content it makes the whole thing feel unprofessional.* The quality of the final game is what I would expect out of a high school project (at best). The collision detection is horrifically buggy. The characters don't animate or move at all (although my understanding from looking at the book is that they're supposed to). The code won't compile under VS2005, only VS2003. It also won't run without a game controller plugged in to the computer - but it doesn't appear to actually use the game controller. He's been promising since the book came out to post the fixes for those last two problems on his web site, but I couldn't find them.All in all, this book is an embarassment. I'm sorry I made my students spend the money on it - and now I'm scrambling to find material to teach my class, because this book hasn't delivered anything close to what it promised.

I don't know that it is any sort of ULTIMATE game programming guide by any means, so maybe the title is what has thrown everyone and they are reading too much into it (and/or maybe the first edition was considerably different than the second, as well) but it is a quick, solid intro to DX10-era game programming. If you just need to quickly learn the general basics of how the Windows platform works for game/3D programming, I think it does the job. It goes over the basic D3D10 system, game controller input, the current audio APIs, etc. If you are new to a platform it can be hard to know where to begin. This quickly gets you right past that and you can take it from there. The important part it knowing where to begin and what the basic components are, from there just use everything you already know.

This book is aimed at the C++ programmer who wants to move into game development and programming. It is oriented around the Microsoft DirectX SDK, which is included on the CD supplied with the book. The format of the book is tutorial in nature. It takes the construction of a game from concept to a finished game one chapter at a time so that each major component of the game is constructed in a logical sequence. By the end of the book a game engine has been constructed as well as the game itself. (It a first person shooter type game.)The book presumes no game experience, but as stated does presume that you already know C++, so should be classified as an intermediate level book. The book is divided into three basic sections: the first is an introduction of DirectX and the Direct 3D API; the second section covers game mathematics and collision detection, input detection and sound; finally it covers model building and animation.The creation of a game is by no means an easy task. This book, however is a great primer on the techniques and skills needed to do good games.

Rather cryptic title I put for my review, but the book seems to follow the same route.I purchased another book awhile back: Programming a Multiplayer FPS in DirectX - very well written and organized.Ultimate Game Programming has a lot of "bugs". The program as you go along seems to fall apart, what is in the book isn't exactly the same as the code provided on the CD Rom. The author leaves out information as to what header files are required, where you should place some of your code. As said before the key failure is the difference in code from book and Rom.Aside from the bad points. Good points. I do like the some code in the pages provided, even though I must realize it might be different on the Rom. Mainly because I'm using another book and this to help solidify my DirectX concepts.So considering I have the Microsoft documentation, another book from the same publisher on programming in DirectX and now this, I have to really research and piece everything together.The coding is really night and day too. The book by Vaughn Young, really sticks to appropriate coding practices, while this seems quickly written.

Nashville, Pilgrims of Guitar Town is great if you want a book that is mostly pictures and not much content in the text. Definitely a "coffee table" book. I was disappointed to see that it is NOT published in the USA.

Everything I expected... interesting stories. I wanted this book probably 15 years ago and didn't have much money so I passed on it. If I could have gotten it back then for what I paid for it now I wouldn't have batted an eye! Anyways... it's cool because now It's like delayed gratification.

At first glance I thought this book was going to be just another "picture" book about famous country stars; I was happily and totally mistaken. While Arnaud and Hicks have captured some beautiful images and descriptions of the Nashville scene's legendary greats, the unique quality of this book is the fact that it also depicts the "stars" of Nashville whose lights have yet to shine, or whose lights may never shine. I found this book to be a wonderful tribute, not necessarily to those who have "made it," but more to the "pilgrimage" of those brave souls who journey to Nashville seeking to "make it" in the music business.Although I am not a big fan of country music, nor am I musically inclined, as I gazed at the faces in this book, some recognizable, but many not, I felt a connection with them. That connection being the subject of hope and dreams.The common thread among the people photographed in this book is not only their journey to Nashville, but their hopes and dreams of acquiring success in the music business. Arnaud and Hicks have incredibly captured the visual and written theme of this pursuit of success. I applaud Arnaud and Hicks for not just honoring and capitalizing on the images of those who have "made it," but for honoring the image of the journey and those "pilgrims" still on its path in Nashville.

High marks for Michel Arnaud's photographic tour of Nashville. It seems to me that his (mostly) black and white portraits capture the essence of a generation - that host of Country and Western aspirants who flocked to Opreyville like the budding movie stars flocking to Hollywood. A few succeeded; many failed. There is less pulchritude in Michel Arnaud's book than if he had chosen to point his camera around Los Angeles, but many more characterful faces. He is a portraitist of the enthusiast, evoking the drink-fuelled abandon of the busking has-beens; the relaxed humanity of the established old-timers; the bounce of the new populists. They all come across as natural and relaxed: Alan Jackson lounging in split jeans on one of the floats of his private seaplane; Ray Wylie Hubbard peering cheerfully at the camera through steel-rimmed specs; wiry Chet Atkins, absorbed in tuning his guitar. The Roots win hands down for me, but there is something for everyone in this evocative album, which shows the Nashville that still retains its vitality underneath the publicised image.

The premise behind this book is excellent,;but it really doesn't make the reader feel like they have gotten an insight into these people who have packed their hopes and dreams in a guitar case and pointed their thumbs towards Music City,USA.The text is very wanting.In many cases there is no text at all accompanying the photographs.In the cast of about a dozen super stars there is some text,but even then nothing that is new or revealing about their struggles.I have been a fan of Country music for over 70 years and many of those shown are unfamiliar to me and although many of them are Songwriters,there is no mention as to what songs they wrote that became hits.As to the many photographs,most are very ordinary,being more quick snapshots than photographs that convey the struggle and dreams that are so much the life of people who want to "make it" in Country Music.Of all the photographs in the book,the only ones that impressed me were the one of Little Jimmy Dickens on page 115 and the rear photograph of Porter Wagoner on page 119.As to the photograph of Dolly Parton,it is a tell nothing ,snapshot that had little no thought input.The picture on the cover,also just a snapshot;but no name or anything in the text about him. Again,as I said,the idea behind this book is great;but the result is quite disappointing.

I was looking forward to reading this book because of the stories and experiences I knew Delilah was likely to share. I was not disappointed. From small town life as a part of a very intense family, to her rising through the ranks while working in radio and then outlining her humanitarian work as she also balanced her work, family and the devastating loss of two children, Delilah's words are inspiring and engaging. On one level it is an easy read, yet, it is also deep and thought-provoking...a book that might need to be read a few times before processing all it has to offer. It covers her love for God, family, and people and fairly projects the woman behind the voice America has come to know, trust and love. She says the book is "just a handful of stories" and that "there are plenty more where these came from." Here's hoping she's willing to share more of those stories and insights in her next book. She asked, just before going to Ghana for the first time, "But I'm just one person, what can one person do?" I think Delilah found her answer and offers that challenge to all of us: "One person can change the world--one heart at a time." She inspires me to be one person "with a heart to change the world for one person, or many" and to consider that the people I encounter in my path may have been placed there for a purpose.

Page 22 last paragraph I cried too! My favorite memory other than Zach is when Delilah tells the Radio Producer with all the statistical information to shove it with a tampon on the desk. That's grit and authenticity. Bet he wishes he never presented those stats and still had her on his radio! Look at her now! I also loved the history in the book of her family and forgiveness. I can't recommend a better book. I enjoyed the pictures. It truly is One Heart at a Time effort! Love her...just simply love Delilah!

Such a simple book but baby has loved it for months. Finally decided to return library copy and get our own. He is one now and likes to imitate the noises that go along w each action verb. "Piggy grunting. Piggy hunting. ..."

Love pigs? Gotta get this picture board book! Know a toddler? Gotta get this picture board book! Great pictures and simple phrases go beautifully together! The expressions on the pig's faces are priceless, too! My daughter's favorite one is at the end, with a teeny, tiny piggie sleeping. Awwwwww! Great series!!!

This book is only good for ages 0-12 months. Definitely not a toddler book. there isn't much reading involved, only 2-3 words sentences. I bought it for my toddler who is obsessed with pigs. The pictures are cute, but my toddler got bored very quickly with it.

My 20 month old is in love with Piggies and giggles every time we read this book. We originally checked it out from our local library and she loved it so much we got our own copy.

This is an awesome board book for the under 2 set. Great photos and simple text keep busy toddlers engaged.

I like these books a lot. My toddlers enjoy them so much. I teach daycare and have ordered several of these Busy books.

The entire "Busy" series is engaging and fun for kids and parents alike. A great way to introduce your child to books, nature, language.
